Description

PATENTED OCT. 22. 1907.
J. HAYS. UMBRELLA.
APPLICATION :11.31) APR. 26, 1907.
VENTOIC 4! J supporting ribs of my umbrella;
Urrrrnn s isrns reruns:
oFFroE,
JOHN HAYS, or UNIQNTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.-
wannabe;
To all wfiom'it may concern: I
Be it known that I, JOHN. HAYS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Uniontown, in'
the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification,
reference being had therein tothe accompanying drawing. v
This invention relates to improvements in umbrellas, and the invention has-forits object to provide an can be'easily and quickly folded and maintained in a folded position until it is desired to use the same.
The umbrella is of a simple, strong and durableconstruction, and highly efficient for the purposes for which it is intended.
The detail construction entering into my improvement will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which: Figure l is an elevation of a portion of an umbrella constructed in accordance with my invention, the
specification of Letters Blatant. Application filed April 26 1907- Serial No'. 370.383-
umbrella being partly broken away and partly shown in section, Fig. 2 is an elevation of a portion of the umbrella folded, one of the ribs thereof being shown in section, Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view illustrating the connection between the stretchers and the ribs.
My improved umbrella consists of a tip section 1, and a handle section 2, said sections being pivotally connected together by a link 3 arranged in the slotted confronting ends 4 of the sections 1 and 2.
The tip section 1, of the umbrella stick carries an outer notched'band 5, to which are connected the cover Forclearucss of illustration, 1 have simply illustrated one of the ribs and one of the stretchers oi the umbrella, it being understood that any desired number of ribs can be used. Each rib consists of a channel shaped telescopic scction 6, and a rod section 7 the section 7 being provided at its inner end with a band 8 having depending pierced lugs 9, which protrude through an open slit in a sleeve 11 the latter loosely mounted upon the lt'l scnplc section 6 and provided with spar-ml ours 10.. 'llupierced lugs 9 of the band 8 and the spaced cars 10 of the sleeve 11 are pivotally connected to a stretcher l2, said stretcher beiiig pivotally connected in turn us at 1 1, to
v Patented Get. 22, 1907 1 a runner 15. movably mounted upon the tip sectionl 0f the'umbrella stick.
Fixed at one end'to' the section 1 of the .nmbrella .stick' by an auxiliary notched band 16 is an auxiliary stretcher 17, and connecting at the other end with a band 18 fixed upon the stretcher 12. interposedbe tween the runner 15 and the auxiliary notched band 16 is a coiled spring 19, said spring surrounding the section 1 of the umbrella stick. The runner 15 is'maintained in an elevated position by a conventional form of resilient holder 20, said holder receding into a groove 2l-formed in the section 1 of the umbrella stick when it is desired to lower the runner. Immediately upon the" holder 20 being pressed into the groove'21, the coiled. spring 19 surrounding the section 1 of the umbrella stick forces the runner 15 downwardly upon thestick 1, and as the auxiliary stretcher 17 has its upper end fixed to the auxiliary notched band 16, the lowering of the inner end of the stretcher 12 causes the outer end of the same to travel inwardly and upwardly uponthe channel-shaped telescopic sections 6 ofthe ribs,
It will be observed that the section'J of the rib. is moved upwardly within the telescopio section 6 and 'thatthe rib of the improved umbrella herein described occupies approximately one-half thelspace, considering length, compared to the rib of ordinary umbrella. The handle section 2 of the umbrella stick can then be folded, whereby the umbrella willbe approximately one-half the length of an ordinary umbrella.
I do not care to confine myself to' the nianner in which the cover is secured upon the umbrella ribs, or to 1. A folding umbrella conslstlng of a stick, an outer notched band carried by said stick; an auxiliary notched hand carried by said stick and spaced from said outer notched band, a runner slidable upon said stick, a spring opcratil rgbetween said runner and sold auxiliary notched band, a spring actuated holder operating to'maintaln said runner in elevated position, telescopic rib sectionssw'lnging at one end from saldouter'notched band, rlb sectlons slidable inf said telescopic rib sections, main stretcher-s plvotally united at thelr ends respectively to said runner and to said sliding rib sections, and auxiliary stretchers swinging" on their ends respectively from said auxiliary notched lmud and said main stretcher-s.
". A folding umbrella consisting of a stick, an outer notched Imud cur-Pied by said stick, an auxiliary notched band carried by said stick and spaced from said outer uolchcd hand, a runner slldahle upon said stick, a spring operating between said runner and said auxiliary notched band, at sprlng acluulcd holder operatlug to maintain said runner in elevated position, telescopic rib sections swinging at one end from said outer notched band, rib sections streldicrs swinging at thcic'ends respectively from said 10 slidable in said Telescopic 1') sections sleeves slidable auxiliary notclied build and said main stretchers. upon said telescopic, rib sections and provided with de- In testimony whereof I :ifiix my signnt'ure in the presence pending enrs, hands cunnectodio said sliding rib sections of two witnesses 5 and eacfi provided with an em: extending betweon the cars 01. said sleeves, hmin stretcher-s pivui'ally united at one end to said sleeves and sliding rib sections by pivots oxtonding through the depending cars thereof and pivotall -united at their other Cndh' to said runner, and auxiliary JOHN HAYS.
