LATCH-LOCK.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. DREssnL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Latch-Locks, of which the following is a specification. Y

My invention relates to an improved latch lock and is particularly adapted to maintain the hinged cover or cap member of a signal lantern in position in relation to the body member thereof, but as will be understood, while my improved latch loclc is particularly adapted for this purpose, it may be used in any structure where latch locks are or may be employed.

In carrying out my present invention, I employ a latch member secured to one of the parts to be held together, a catch member comprising a spring connected at one end to the other part which is to be held together, and at its other end, this catch member is adapted to engage the said latch member, an auxiliary spring member and means for guiding and limiting the movement of the said spring and auxiliary spring members, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.

h represents an auxiliary spring member, which conforms generally in outline to the spring member 0, lies against the upper surface of the same for stiffening the same and is connected to the cover member d by the same rivet 12 which secures the said spring 0 thereto and intermediate of the rivet 12 and the looped end e of the spring 0, I employ a headed stud member 1'. This stud member 11 is secured in the cover member d of the lantern and the shank of the stud member passes freely through openings made in the spring member 0 and the auxiliary spring member h provided for this purpose.

In the hereinbeiore described latch structure, it will be apparent that to uniasten the catch member from the latch member, the loop portion e of the spring 0 must be moved outwardly and then upwardly, the movement of the springs c and h on the stud memberi being sufficient to permit the loop 6 to pass over the latch portion 11 of the member a and in view. of the fact that it is necessary to first move the catch member outwardly before the same is moved upwardly, no amount of force applied in endeavoring to eiiect the initial movement upwardly, will uniasten the parts of the latch lock.

I claim as my invention:

1. A latch lock comprising a latch member, a spring catch member, means provided at the end of the said spring catch member for engaging the latch member, an auxiliary spring member and means for guiding and li1nil' ing the movement of the said spring catch member.

2. A latch lock comprising a latch member. a spring catch member fixed at one end and provided at the other end with a slotted loop adapted to engage the said latch member, an auxiliary spring and means for guiding and limiting the movement of the said spring catch and auxiliary spring members.

3. In a signal lantern, the combination with the lantern body and the lantern cover hinged thereto, of a latch member secured to the lantern body, a catch member secured at one end to the said lantern cover and adapted at the other end to engage the said latch member an overlying auxiliary spring-member and means centrally disposed Within the width and length of the catch-member for limiting and guiding the movement of the said spring catch member.

I. In a signal lantern, the combination with the lantern body and the lantern cover hinged thereto, of a latch member secured to the lantern body, a catch member secured at one end to the said lantern cover and adapted at the other end to engage the said latch member, an auxiliary spring conforming in outline with the said spring catch member and lying against the outer surface thereof, and means for limiting and guiding the movement of the said catch spring.

5. In a signal lantern, the combination with the lantern 7 body and the lantern cover hinged thereto, of a latch mem ber secured to the lantern body, a spring catch member, an auxiliary spring member conforming in outline with said spring catch member and lying against the outer surface thereof, means for securing the corresponding ends of the said spring catch and auxiliary spring members to the lantern cover, a slotted loop at the free end of the said spring catch member adapted to engage said latch member and a stud member secured in the said lantern cover and passing freely through the said spring catch member and auxiliary spring member at a point intermediate of that in which said spring members are secured in the lantern cover and the looped end of the said spring catch member.
