Description

SANFORD E. WEST, OF PAWTUGKET, RHODE ISLAND.
GARMENT-SUPPORTER,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 22, 1907'.
Application filed March 25, 1907. Serial No. 364,542.
To all lwhom il may concern:
Be it known that l, SANFORD E. WEsT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ol the city of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence, State oi Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporters,' of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for connecting to Suspenders and havingy means to clasp upon the girthhem of a trousers and drawers, thus dispensing with the common button and tape connection on said garments, and providing a device which shall be more convenient to use and of lesser liability to get out oi' order than the devices now generally used for this purpose.
In the accompanying sheet oi drawings, Figure l represents an edge view of my improved garment clasp, as in open condition. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a central vertical sectional view, showing the suspender-connection to the clasp and the latter in closed condition upon the girth-hem of a trousers and drawers, and, Figs. l, 5 and 6 represent rear perspective views of the structural parts of my device.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
My improved garmeu t supporter comprises three vertically arranged members a, b and c, which are made from sheet metal. The member a has its longitudinal edges curved inwardly to form guide-ways al, a1, to receive the member b. The upper portion of the member a is curved outwardly to orm a hook a2 for connection with the slit r el' the suspender s. Between the guide-ways u1 the metal is upset to form a longitudinal Lrroove a to receive the indentation b1 formed in thev b 7 member b, and arranged to limit the sliding movement of the member a upon said latter member. The member b has two laterally extending circular bent portions b2, b2, to receive therethrough a pin p. The member c is slitted longitudinalh7 so as to leave a central strip c1 whose upper portion is provided with a lateral depression 02 for the pin y; to rest against in securing said member c to the member b. The upper portion of the member c, above its depression c2, is curved to form a tongue c3, to bear against the rear surface ofthe member a in closing the hinged members b and c. Each member b and c is provided with a series of upset prongs d, dl which extend toward each other, as shown.
The operation of the device is as follows: Assuming the clasp to be open and in position over the hems of the garments e and f, as shown in Fig. l, a thumb pressure is exerted upon the tongue c3 to shove downward the hinged gripping-members b, c, and as the tongue comes into frictional contact with the member a it causes the prongs of both members b, c to firmly embed against the hems of the garments, in the manner shown in Fig. 3.
The releasing oi the device is accomplished by exerting an upward pressure upon the lower edge of the gripping member c, and a downward pressure upon the hook portion a2. This causes a relative movement be tween the gripping members and the hook member, which effects the releasing oi the garment edge from the bight of the gripping members.
By my construction and arrangement of parts, I provide a clasp that may be quickly and easily applied to support two garments, and at the same time a clasp that is simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
A garment-supporting device comprising in combination a hook-member having oppositcly disposed guide-ways; a prong gripping member slidably mounted in the guideways or' the first said member' and having two laterally disposed circular bent portions; a pin secured through the bent portions of said gripping-member; a second pronggripping-member having a central strip formed by slitting the mctaLthe strip being provided with a lateral depression for said pin to rest upon in securing both gripping-members together, and the last mentioned gripping member having a tongue which coming in Contact with the `hook-member causes the gripping-members to be held in a irmly closed condition.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SANFORD E. WEST.
