Be it known that l, .lOsnriuNn B. THURMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useiul Improvements in a Combined Step-Laddcr and Table, of which the iol lowing is a specification.

This invention relatos to certain new and useful improvements in combined step ladders and tables.

The invention has for its objects the production of a simple device of this character which may be readily and quickly converted into either a step ladder or a table, or which can be closely and compactly i'olded for transportation or storage.

A further object is to provide a common means lor holding the parts against separation irrespective ofthe use to which the device may be put.

The invention will be hereinafter fully described and particularly set `forth in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view illustrating my invention, the same being shown as adapted for use as a step ladder.A Fig. 2 is a front view thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation illustrating thcparts` when folded to perform the functions of a table. Fig. 1 is a detail sectional view.

Referring to the drawings designates the uprights or sides which serve to pivot-ally support the leaves ll-12-l3, the pivots .l/l being located near the outer edges of said leaves. '.lo the inner edges oi the leaves l1 and l2 are secured hinges 15, said hinges being' also connected to the centr-.il support 1G. The prop members ol' the step ladder are formed by braces 17 pivoted to the sides 10 at 1S, and to said braces is pivoted a cross piece 19 to which is secured a stay member 20. Said stay member 20 is provided with a link 2]. Which embraces the central support 1G and engages a lugl 22 thereon. The legs 23 of the table are also pivotally supported by the braces 17. The leaf 12 adjacent its pivot is provided with a shol't lip 24 the purpose of which will appear later. l

When it is desired to use my device as a step ladder the braces 17 are moved out on their pivots to separate the lower ends thereof from the corresponding ends of the sides 10, this separating movement being limited by the link 21 and the lug 22. The separation of the braces and sides permits the central support 16 to drop down in the position shown in Fig. 1 until the lower end touches the floor. The leaf 13 is then swung to the position indicated in Fig. l, and the legs 23 folded back as indicated in said ligure. In this position the leaves 11, l2 and 13 serve as steps, the leaves ll and l2 being .[irmly supported by their pivots 111 and the central member lb, while the leaf 13 rests on the upper endsof the braces 1'7.

When it is desired to employ the device as a table the sides 10 are lifted so as to swing the leaves 11 and 12 upon their pivots 14, this movement bringing said leaves in lineas indicated in Fig. 3, the central support 1G being moved up towards the outer edge oi' said sides. At the same time the leaf 13 is swung back until its iree edge rests upon the lip 24, thus forming a ilush top surface for the table. At the same time the stay member through its engagement with the lug 22, swings on its pivots and draws the braces 17 into a position parallel With the top ol the table. The legs 23 are then brought into proper position as shown in Fig. 3, being locked by any suitable device, While the central support is sustained by a rod 25 the ends of which are removably mounted in holes 2G in the sides 10.

The advantages oi my improved combined step ladder and table are obvious. It will be' particularly noted that the same is exceedingly simple in construction and being composed of few parts is not liable to readily get out of order or become deranged. lt will be especially noted that the same can be readily converted for use either as a .step ladder or a table in a minimum space oi time, or it can be compactly folded when not required for use. A further advantage lies in the iact that the stay member serves to prevent the spreading of the parts when used as a ladder and also serves to rigidly hold the leaves in position when folded for use as a table. It will be further observed that 1 secure a table of maximum rigidity with a flush and smooth top surface which is particularly advantageous for use as an ironing table. It will also be observed that the sides 10 serve as the sides or guards of the step ladder, and when the devce is folded ior use as a table, said sides serve to hide or cover the other parts, thereby presenting-.a neat and finished appearance.

I claim as my invention 1. A combined step ladder and table comprising sides, leaves pivoted thereto, a central supporting member pivotally connected t0 said leaves, prop members pivoted to said sides, legs carried by said prop members, and a stay member pivoted to said prop members and engagingsaid supporting member.

2. A combined step ladder and table comprising sides, a plurality of leaves pivotcd to said sides, one of said leaves being provided with a lip, a central supporting member pivotally connected to said leaves, an additional leaf pivoted to said sides and adapted to engage said lip, prop members pivoted to said sides and supporting ,said additional leaf, and a stay member pivoted to said prop members and engaging said central supporting member.

3. A colnbinedstep ladder and table comprising sides, leaves pivoted thereto, a central supporting member pivoted to said leaves and provided with a lug, prop members pivoted to said sides, and a stay member pivoted to said prop members and having a link engaging said lug.

A combined step ladder and table comprising sides, leaves pivoted thereto, a central supporting' member pivotally connected to said leaves and provided with a lug, a lip formed on one oi said leaves, prop members secured to said sides, an additional leaf pivoted to said sides and adapted to rest on said prop members, the free edge of said leat being adapted to engage said lip, legs secured to said prop members, and a stay member pivoted to said prop members and having a link engaging said lug.

5. A combined step ladder and table comprising sides, leaves pivoted thereto, a supporting member pivoted to said leaves, prop members pivoted to said sides, the leaves, supporting member and prop members being movable to a position in which the parts form a step ladder, the leaves forming steps, and the leaves, supporting member and prop members being movable to positions in which the leaves,
