Be" it known that I, J 01m H. ALTER, a citizen of the UnitedTStates, residing at. Conneaut, in the county oi Ashtabula vand- State oi .Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Paper-Clips; of which the'following isa specification. v

My invention relates to devices employed for temporarily or permanently retaining a number 'of superimposed sheets of paper files or other similar materialand usually designated as paper clips or fasteners.

, 4 ,The objects of my invention are, to produce a paper clip that will effectively hold together any number.

At points 4, equidistant from the middle of the bar 3, the wire is bent downwardly at right angles to form the curvilinear members which extend downwardly from these bonds 4, the wire being bent on each side in the form of an arqgx tending' approximately 90 degrem, forming

The distal end portions of the wire are then bent at 6 in an upward direction and parallel to each other, and the portions 7 are left straight; except at the extremities which'aro formed into eyes v8 to give a better finish to protect the papers from damage from the free-ends of the wire, and to afford a greater contact surface with the papers and thereby increase the holding power oi the clip. The centers otcurvature oi the branches 5 are so located that their arcs will intersect at a point perpendicular to the middle of the straight median portion 3, thus causing said branches to overlap at that Specification in Letters Patent.

5 and 7 on each side of the central member 3 hold their parallel relation'regardless of the thickness of the package which-is clamped thus maintaining frictional contact'throughout their entire length.

It will also be noted that the bar 3 affords a convenient grasping member in applying the device, and suggests the proper method of applying the clip, as the tension exerted by the members 5 is due to 'the fact that torsion is exerted on the bar 3 at its ends. the relative great length of the bar gives long resilient life to the device.

The loose sheets of paper or other material which it is desired tosubjoin are inserted between the angles or bends 6 of each'of the branches and such insertion is facilitated by the contour of the reentrant angle or atiording a triple frictional engaging surface for thepapers embraced by the clips.

My improved clips may be manufactured in various sizes, the gage ofv the wire which enters into their composition being selected to correspond.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A paper clip composed of single piece of wire bent toform a median straight portion, the branches upon each side of sald medlsn'porflon extending towards eaehpther and curved to form duplicate intersecting arcs. nndeach distal portlonberng bent towards the median portion-and lylng parallel to each other and intersecting the curved branches.

2. A paper elip composed of a wlre bent to form a medlan straight portion, the branches upon each slde'of said median portion extending towards each other nndcurved to form duplicate intersecting arcs, and each distal portion being bent towards the median portion and lying parallel
