PROCESS OF MAKING GAS.
. specification ofnettersratent. .appassionanti nay 2,1907. snm No'. 971,371.
Patented oet. 22, 1907.
To allwhomitmay concern: I l
lie it known that I, DAVID A. SHORT, a citizen of the United States, residi at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State o Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Processes oiMaking Gas, of which the following is a specification.
M y invention rclates to a process of making gas and utilizing th e heat products thereof, the object of this in ventioh boing to utilize the heat of the gases produced by a producer gas apparatus to distil coal in retorts, to
make ordinary distilledrgas and to then utilize the coke from said e torts in the producer gas apparatus.
A further lobject of the invention is the process oi means for utilizing the heat products iror'n the producer gas apparatus to generate steam. f
A further object of the invention is theproduction of a ixed'gas consisting oi a mixture of producer gas and distilled gas and the utilization of all the heat producing powers oi the fuel from which said gas is obtained.
Further objects and advantages of the invention Will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows. f
In` the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is aside ele' vaton'o a gas producing apparatus constructed in accordance with the invention, and, Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough. v
` It is lo be undcrso lod that the apparatus herein shown and described, ioruis no part of the' present invention,
except in so iur as it illustrats rncans for carryingout the process which lhavc invented.
Numerous other mechanical devices might be substituted for those herein shown and de cribed, the invention residing in thc novel process hereinafter sci forth.
In the drawing, the numeral 5 designates a gas pro ducer ol' any desired type. lhe gas generated by this producer passes through an opening to the intcrior of the casing 7, this casing boing formed partially of metal and partially of lire brick. ltctortsS arearrangcd with in this casing, preferably at an angl(l of about forty-tivo degrees, though this angle may bo varied at will, or the retorts i'nay bo horizontal or vertical. The lowor ends ol thesii rotorts are closed by doors 9'of any suitable ina.- terial.
A steam generator l() is located beneath the rciorts and a mixer 1l is also located beneath said rclorts and preferably above the gcncrator.
Hoppers 12 communicate, through spouts 13 with spiral conveyors 14, said conveyors boing adapted to convey fuel to either oi the oppositcly inclined rctorts through the tubes l5.
Pipes 16 extend through thc casing 7 and communicate through brauclrpipcs 17 with the rotorts, these pipes serving to conveythe distilled gas from tlnl rctorts to the mixer l1, it being understood that this mixer 11 may be of any desired type. A tee 18 leads from the end of the casing 7 and a pipe 19 leads from said tee. `Another pipe 20 leading from the opposite side of said tee, extends to the steam generator 10. A pipe 2l .which extends from the opposite end of the generator establishes communication between said generator and the mixer 11|, this mixer boing illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. A 'branch the pipe 16 and is adapted to convey the distilled gas from the retorts to any desired point. Pipes 23 extend along thev casing 7 at the lower ends of the retorts and are adapted to receive the tar from 'said retorts and to convoy saidl tar to the producer gas apparatus through a branch pipe 24.
The operation of the device is as follows: .The very hot producer gas passes through the casing 7 and around the retorts 8 distilling the coal contained in said retort!! and producing distilled 'gas v`from said retorts. This distilled gas passes through the pipes 16 to the mixer, or if it be desired to use this distilled gas, -it may be taken' ofi through the branch pipe 22, After the producer gas has passed through thc casing pipe 20 and through the generator 10 where its heat is there utilized to gencratesteam in the usual and Well known manner. After passing the stha-rn generator, the pmduccrgas goes througlrthe pipe 21 to the mixer 11. Ordinarily tinl distilled gus from the rctorts,'will be taken through the pipes l( to'thc mixer l1, the distilled gas and thc producer gas being hcromixed to make a lixcd gas of the wlioir- .I
If it be desired to utilize thc producer gas without mixing it with thc distilled gas, this' producer gas rnay gas, tbc rom-.lining coke is removed from thc retorts through thc doors 9 and conveyed in any dcsire'd n1an nor to tho producer gas generator 5, whcrc every particlil oi uns is extracted from it and `whore the heat from said coke isstill further utilized in distilling more coal in tho rolorts. "lhe tar conveyed to thc producer gas ziplmratos, is also utilized in the production of producer gas. Il.l will therefore be seen that cvcry particle of heat producing power contained within the fuel delivered to this apparatus, is utilized. Ordinarily, producer gas is passed through a cooling device before being delivered to the mix'cr.` The heat units lost in cool ing this gas, represent a direct waste and by virtue of saved.
What I claim, is:
producer gas and1hen passing said producer gas through pipe 22 communicates with 75 7, it passes through the bo token off through thc brauch pipe I9. After the coal l in tlui rctorls has been distilled to produce thc distilled j the process herein set forth, these heat units may be [with me di 2. coal and disiilling Suid coul by the heut of said producer his, then passing said producer gas through the lines o1 teumgenemtr without igniting said gas and then mixing said-piodiieer gas with the distilled gas to form a iixedgasnf the lwhole. f3. A, process 0f making gas which consists in making producer jgasl passing said gus about retorna `containing een! and distilling said coal by the heat of said producer i l l l l l I gas, then passing said producer gas through The fines 0f :1 steam ,generator without igniting snid gas, then mixing:Y Suid producer gus with the distilled gus o forni a xixed gus of the whole, and then utilizing the coke from said relorts in the producer gais generator.
In testimony whereof I atiix niy signature in presence of two witnesses.
