EDWARD THOMSON O"KANE, OF DELAWARE, OHIO.
WINDOW-DRESSING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 22, 1907.
Application filed February 19, 1907. Serial No. 353.245.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD THOMSON OKANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delaware, in the county of Delaware and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Window-Dressing Device; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in window-dressers and pertains more particularly to that class of devices whereby an article may be easily and readily positioned or withdrawn without the necessity of a person, entering the window.
It is an object of the invention to provide a device of this character with a novel gripping means and manner for operating the same.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel device that will be simple in construction, efficient in practice, and economical to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel arrangement and combination of parts to be herein alter more fully described.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawing forming part of the specification wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views and in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, showing the fingers distended. Figs. 3 and -'i are detailed views of the device.
In the drawing 1 indicates a tubular or hollow stem, which maybe of any desired length. Secured to one end of the stem is a hand grasp or handle 2 which has its central portion 3 cut away. To the opposite end of the stem is secured a cup 4, which has formed near its free edge an annular groove 5. This groove is preferably formed by beading the cup, but of course it is to be understood that it may be formed in any desired manner.
Extending through the stem 1 is a rod 7, which projects within the cup 5 and has on its end a head 8. Extending within the cup 5 are the enlarged ends 6 of the arm 7. One edge of each of the arms is provided with a notch 9 adapted to receive the head 8. Oppositely arranged to the notch is a lug or extension 10 which projects within the annular groove 5. This lug acts as a fulcrum for the arm. It is to be understood that the movement of the rod 7 within the stem 1, through the medium of the head 8 and the notches 9, will cause the arm to oscillate on their projections 10. This will cause the arms to grip or release an article as will, it is thought, be plainly understood. The opposite end of the stem 7 extends within the hollow portion of the handle 2 and is provided with a ring or loop 11. This is intended to be engaged by thefinger of the operator to give the requisite reciprocation or movement to the stem 7.
To the free end of each of the arms is secured in any ordinary or preferred manner, a finger 12 which is a proximately L-shaped in cross-section. This finger should be formed of a yieldable material as it is the portion that contacts with the article to be placed. In order to hold the arms against any undue lateral movement the head is provided with the projection or guiding finger 14, one to either side of the fingers and adjacent thereto. The fingers may be placed upon the arms 10 in any desired manner that will fully meet the requirements of practice, although it has been found of greater advantage to provide each of the fingers with a socket 15 to receive an end portion of the arm.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination a hollow stem a cup carried thereby, said cup being provided with an interior annular groove, a rod extending through the hollow stem and projecting within the cup, a head on the rod within the cup and a plurality oi gripping arms, each arm having an enlarged end portion within the cup, said enlarged portion being provided with a notch to receive a head and having a lug extending within the cup.
2. In combination a hollow stem, 11 cup carried thereby, said cup being provided with an interior annular groove, a rod extending through the hollow stem and projecting within the cup, 21 head on the rod within the cup and plurality of gripping arms, each arm having an enlarged end portion within the cup, said enlarged portion being provided with a notch to receive a head and having :1 lug extending within the cup, and fingers carried by the head ad jacent the end of each finger for holding the finger against undue lateral movement.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD THOMSON OKANE.
