To all whom it may; concern:

Be it `known that i, Emma E. FiiIRcnrLD, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county oi Monroe and State oi New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Picture- Frames, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to picture frames, and aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a plurality oi' foldable blank members preferablyformed of fibrous material; for example, card board, and which, when set up and secured together, will form a complete, strong, durable, and inexpensive picture frame, as well as constituting a satisfactory substitute for the passe-partout binding.

Briefly described, the invention consists of a plu rality of foldable blank members oi' any suitable size and preferably oi card board properly cut and scored so as to form a body portion having upturned sides and ends suitably connected together, and furtherlto form fold-able side and end frame sections, which, when set up and secured lo the body portion, enable an easy, feasible, simple, and economical means oi" framing pictures. The frame when set up can be made ornamental and elaborate as desired.

lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction oi picture frames hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown the preierred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

ln describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the acemnpanying drawings forming a part of this specification, wherein like reference characters denote correspoiuling parts throughout the several views, and in which:

Figure 1 isa view of the blank from which the body portion of the frame is made. Fig. 2 is a perspective view oi the body portion showing the upturned sides and ends connected together. Fig. 3 is a perspective view oi the iorluoi blank from which the end sections of the frame are made. Fig. 4 is a like view of one of the end sections of the frame when the blank illustrated in Fig. 3 has been folded upon itself and secured together. Fig. 5 is a view similar' to Fig. 3 of the blank from which the side sections of the frame are formed. Fig. (j is a view silnilar to Fig. 4 of one of the side sections of the frame. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the frame when set up with one side and one end section of the frame removed. Fig. 8 is a section on line 7-7, Fig. (i. Fig. 9 shows a modified form of blank for the end and side iraine sections.

Referring to the drawing by reference characters,

the blank from which the body portion of the frame is made is formed of a sheet of suitable fibrous material and is indicated by the reference character 10. Each corner of the blank is cut away, as at 11, and the blank en its rear face is scored, as at 1 2, 13, to enable the marginal portions of the sides and ends of the blank to be bent outwardly, so as to provide the blank with a pair of end walls 14 and a pair of side walls 15. The cutting away oi' the blank at the corners thereof enables the marginal portions when bent to form the walls 14, 15 to meet, as shown in Fig. 2. The ends of the walls 14 are connected to the ends of the walls 1 5 by suitable hold-fast devices 16. In view of the construction just set forth, it is evident that a body por- `tion for the picture frame is formed, and which is provided with end and side walls 1li, 15. These end and side walls 14, 15 are termed the inner sections of the end and side walls of the picture frame proper. The outer sections of the end and side walls are formed by the frame sections to be hereinafter referred to.

In Fig. 3 is shown the form of blank from which the end frame sections are formed. Two of these blanks are utilized when setting up the frame, but only onev will be described -and shown. This blank is indicated by the reference character 17, and is formed of a strip of any desired width and length. At each end of the strip 17 is formed a bowed V-shaped cut away portion 18, the said V-shaped cut away portion 18 at each end of the strip 17 starting at a point removed from one corner of the strip, extending inwardly the desired length, and terminating in the opposite corner of the strip. The apexes of the V-shaped cut away portions are connected together by a score 19 formed in the outer face of the strip 17, and, by providing said score 19, it will enable a portion of the strip to be folded back upon one end of the Vshaped portion at one end of the strip with one end of the V-shaped portion at the other end of the strip, and the said score 22 is positioned at a point removed from the edge 23 of the strip 17. By providing the score 22, the portion 30 of the strip can be bent inwardly so as to form the outer section of the end Walls of the frame. The strip 17 is furthermore provided on its inner face with a score 25 which associates with the score 20 and allows the portions 26 and 28 tolie fiat upon the body portion, as illustrated in Fig. 7, when the frame is set up. Each of the V-shaped cut-away portions 17 has the edges thereof between the scores 19 and 25, and 19 and 20 more oblique than the remaining portion of the edges, thereby forming a more acute angle at the apex. When the portions 27, 28 are folded back upon the portions 26 and 29, the end edges of the portions 27, 28 are flush with the end edges of the portions 26, 29. By providing the V-shaped Cut away portions, when the portions 27, 28 of the strip are folded back upon the portions 26, 29, the end edges of the strip extending from the portion 30 are beveled, or are what may be termed niitered, so as to'lie flush with the end edges of the side frame sections to be hereinafter referred to. The poi'- tions 27 and 29 extend at an inclination vfrom the portion 30 when the latter and the portions 27 and 28 are in the position as shown in Fig. 7.

1n Fig. 5 is shown the form of blank from which the side frame sections are formed. Two of these blanks are employed when setting up the frame, but only one will be described and shown. This blank is indicated by the reference character 31 and is formed of a strip of any desired width and length. it is longer, however, than the blank 17, as, preferably, the side frame sections are of greater length than the end frame sections, but the frame sections may all be of the same length. At each end of the strip 31 is formed a bowed V-shaped cut away portion 32, the said V-shaped cut away portion 32 at each end of the strip 3l, starting at a point removed from one corner of the stiip, extending inwardly the desired length, and terminating in the opposite corner of the strip. The apexes of the V- shaped cut away portions are connected together by a score 33 formed in the outer face of the strip 3l., and, by providing said scoie 33, it will enable a portion of the strip 31 to be folded back upon itself, thereby forming a reinforced side frame section, and, at the same time, increasing the thickness of the said section, so it will set out from the body portion when the frame is formed. The strip 31 is further scored on its outer face, as at 34, said score 34 being positioned at an intermediate point between the score 33 and the edge 35 of the strip 31. The strip 31 is furthermore provided lwith an additional score 36 in its outer face, which connects one end of the V-shaped portion at one end of the strip with one end of the V-shaped portion at the other end of the strip, and the said score 36 is positioned at a point removed from the edge 37 of the strip 31. By providing the score 36, the portion 38 of the stiip can be bent inwardly so as to form the outer section of the side walls of the frame. The strip 31 hasalso formed in its inner face a score 39 which associates with the score 34 and allows the portions 40 and 41 to lie flat upon the body portion, as illustrated in Fig. 7, when the frame is set up. Each of the V- shaped cut-away portions 32 has the edges thereof between the scores 33 and 39, and 33 and 34 more oblique than the remaining portion of the edges thereby forming a more acute angle at the apex. When the portions 41, 42 of the strip 31 are folded back upon the portions 40, 43, the end edges of the portions 41, 42 are flush with the end edges of the portions 40, 43. By providing the V-shaped cut away portions at each end of the strip 31, when the portions 41, 42 of the strip are folded back upon the portions 40, 43, the end edges of the strip extending from the portion 38 are beveled,

or are what may be termed mitered, so as to lie flush with the end edges of the end frame sections hereinbefore referred to. The portions 41 and 43 of the strip 31 extend at an inclination from the portion 38 when the latter and the portions 41, 42 are in the position as shown in Fig. 7. The iuturned portions 27, 28 of the blank shown in Fig. 3 are secured to the portions 26 and 29 by any suitable adhesive substance, and the inturned portions 41 and 42 of the blank shown in Fig. 5 are secured to the portions 40, 43 by any suitable adhesive substance. VThe portion 30 of the blank shown in Fig. 3 and the portion 38 of the blank shown in Fig. 5 when the frame is set up are secured respectively to the outer face of the end walls 14 and outer face of the side walls 15 by suitable adhesive substance.. When the frame is set up, the portieri 27 of the blank shown in Fig. 3 and the portion 41 oi' the blank shown in Fig. 5 are secured to thc edge oi the upturned flange of the body portion by a suitable adhesive.

When the end frame and side frame sections are secured to the body portion in the manner as stated, a complete frame is formed, yet, if desired, the end and side frame sections may be covered by any suitable material, as indicated by the reference character 43, for example, such material may be paper designed to imitate wood, so as to give to the side and end frame members the appearance of strips of wood. Owing to the extending at an inclination of the portions 27 and 29 of the end frame sections and the portions 41 and 4-3 of the side frame sections, the frame, when set up, will be provided with a bevel extending entirely around the same, and which merges into the flattened portions 26, 28 and 40, 42 of the end and side frame sections respectively. Owing to the manner of reinforcing the side and end frame sections they will be caused to set out from the body portion.

1n the modification shown in Fig. 9, the blank from which the side and end frame sections are formed is formed of two sections in lieu of a single piece, said sections being hinged together. 1n Fig. 9, the reference character 45 denotes a strip of material secured to the two sectionsfor hinging them together, and said hinge is the equivalent of the score 19 or the score 33. Otherwise than that as stated, the form of blank shown in Figl 9 is the same as that shown in Figs. 3 and 5, it being scoied in the same manner and provided with a bowed V-shaped cut away portion. The sections of the blank shown in Fig. 9 are indicated by the reference characters 46 and 47.

The frame can be sold in its complete stato; that is to say, with the end frame sections and side frame sections secured to the body portion,-the picture can then be pasted to the body portion between the edges of the side and end frame sections. rlhe frame can also be sold with the side and end frame sections detached from the body portion, and, in lieu of positioning the picture between the edges of the side and end frame sections, the picture can be secured to the body portion, and the side and end frame sections secured to the picture,-somewhat along the lines of passe-partouting.

Owing to the manner of forming the side and end walls of the frame of two sections, it will be evident that such walls are reinforced, thereby increasing the durability thereof, or, rather, increasing the strength of the frame, and it will furthermore be evident that the upturned marginal portions oi the body portion Will prevent collapsing oi' the inclined portions of the side and end traine sections.

Having thus fully described my invention7 what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A picture iralno comprising a body portion having the margin thereoi bent outwardly'to i'orin side and end walls, and reinforced side and end traine sections having inviardly extendim,`- portions secured to the outer face of the side and end walls to reinforce them.

2. A picture Vl'rainc comprising a body portion having the margin thereof outtllrned, a pair oi end traine sections each having a portion thereof bent upon itself and each further provided' with :in inturned portion abutting against and secured to the marginal out-turned portions oi the body portion, and a pair ot side `trame sections each havinnr a portion thereoi' bent upon itself and further having an inturned portion associating with the out-tnrned inar- L'innl portions oi' the body portion, said end and side Trame sections being positioned against the onteitaee oi' the body portion.

A picture frame comprising a body portion having the margin thereof ont-turned, a pair oi' end traine sections each having beveled edges and :i portion thereof bent upon itself and further provided with an inturned portion abut- 'tingagainst and secured to the marginal out-turned por tions oi' the body portion, and a pair ot side frame sections each having beveled edges and a` portion thereof bent upon itself and further having an inturned portion associating with the out-turned marginal portions of the body portion, said end and side frame sections being positioned against the outer face oi the body portion, the beveled edges of the end frame sections abutting against the beveled edges ot the side frame sections when the said frame sections are positioned at the front of the body portion.

4. A picture frame comprising a body portion having the margin thereof outturned, a pair of end frame sections each having beveled edges and a portion thereof bent upon itself and further provided with an inturned portion abutting,l against and secured to the marginal out-turned pon tions o1 the body portion, and a pair of side traine sections each having, beveled edges and a portion thereof bent upon itseli' and further having an inturned portion associatingl with the outturned marginal portions of the body portion, said end and side frame sections being positioned against the outer face of the body portion, the beveled edges 0i `the end trarne sections abutting against the beveled edges of the side trame sections when the said frame sections are positioned at the front ot the body portion, and a cover for each ot the said frame sections.
