An essential characteristic of the coffin consists of wooden rods for reinforcing the cardboard, placed horizontally (24) on the outer edges of the end walls (4) as well as a reinforcing rod (22) firmly glued to the ceiling. of the triangular channel of the side walls, the ends of which have been fixed, for example by stapling (23) to the ends of the horizontal wooden strips (24) of the end walls (4). The bottom and the lid of the coffin are formed in the same way. The coffin can be covered normally with a cloth.

Description

Raw product for a coffin, and casket made thereof.
The present invention concerns a coffin made of cardboard, plastic or equivalent and the raw product, or blank, of which the coffin has been made.
The manufacturing of a coffin of a cardboard blank renders possible that assembly of the coffin in the coffin store is easily accomplished from such blanks. The transport of blanks requires only a fracture of the space needed to transport finished coffins.
It is known in prior art to make coffins of cardboard. However, these have not been of such design that they could be assembled with ease of plate-like, ready-made blanks.
The coffin blank (or blanks) of the invention made of cardboard or equivalent material, cut to desired shape and provided with folding scores, is characterized by the features stated in the characteristic features part of claim 1. The features characteristic of the coffin made of the blank are stated in the characteristic features part of claim 6.
The blank for the bottom component and for the lid are both made in the same way. The lid component merely differs in shape from the bottom component. The main difference lies therein that the bottom of the bottom component is broader then the roof of the lid component. Both components may of course be made equal, but the attractive appearance of the coffin suffers in that case.
The invention is more closely described with the aid of the drawings attached, wherein has been presented an embodiment example.
Fig. 1 presents the blank for the bottom component of the coffin.
Fig. 2 shows the end portion of the coffin's bottom component, in axonometric presentation.
In Fig. 1 is depicted a blank of which the bottom component of the coffin may be made. The blank consists of cardboard, for instance of corrugated cardboard. The blank may be cut from one sheet, or it may be assemblable of a plurality of sheet parts. The parts which fold to the sides of the bottom 1 of the bottom component of the coffin - the side walls 2 and end parts 4 - are folded along the folding scores 11 and 12. The side walls furthermore present scores 13, 14 and 15, and the ends present the scores 16, 17 and 13. On the side walls moreover the scores 21 are found. The score 21 and the cut of the endβ have been given such shape that upon turning up the sides 2 and ends 4 an upwardly broadening shape of the coffin is obtained.
Fig. 2 displays the bottom component of the coffin, or the end portion of the lid respectively, upon folding. In the corner between the side wall 2 and end wall 4 a strip of wood has been affixed to serve as reinforcement, this strip being advantageously triangular of its cross section. The end 3 of the side wall has been folded over the end wall along the scoring 21 and it has been stapled through the end cardboard to the strip of wood thereinunder. On the top margin of the end wall a strip of wood 24 is provided, its ends being somewhat visible in Fig. 2. The marginal parts 8, 9 and 10 of the blank's end have been folded over this strip. of wood. The part 8 comes to lie upon the strip of wood, the part 9 turns down to cover the side of the strip of wood, and the part 10 is glued fast to the end wall. The cross section of the strip of wood 24 may be rhombic, whereby a small hollow space is left between the part 9 and the end wall above the point where the part 10 is glued on if it is desired to position the part 9 in the vertical plane in the bottom component. The upper part of the end wall 4, the horizontal plane 8 and the down-turned plane 9 constitute a channel with triangular cross section, which is understood to contain the strip of wood 24 in its upper part. The strip of wood thus need not fill the entire channnel. In the lid component, in fact, the strip of wood may have triangular cross section and the cardboard may follow the surfaces of the strip.
Stiffening of the side walls 2 is accomplished by means of a channel with triangular cross section with a reinforcing strip 22 glued fast to its upper margin; this reinforcing strip may consist of plywood, cardboard, hardboard, plastic or of material made of these, and its end extends from under the horizontal part 5 to run over the transversal strip 24 of the end and is affixed to this strip, e.g. by stapling or nailing, as the arrow 23 indicates. In the plane 5 constituting the horizontal surface of the edge has been made a cut 19, and similarly a cut 20 may be provided in the horizontal surface 8 of the end portion, the end of the reinforcement strip 22 being stapled fast in their contiguity. It is naturally possible to make a slight thinning in the end strip 24 at this point, but such is not necessary as a rule because the difference in height at the corner is not substantially changed by the juncture. The triangular channel reinforcing the side wall is thus formed by the part 5 of the horizontal surface of the side wall, to the lower margin of which has been glued the reinforcing strip 22, and on the outside the side wall of the coffin and on the inside the vertical folding part 6 of the side wall, its lower margin having been glued and/or stapled fast to the inner surface of the side wall 2 by the aid of the gluing member 7.
After the blank has been completely made and the wood strips required on the ends have been procured and the reinforcing strip for the side wall is at hand, it is an easy job and one that is swiftly accomplished, to assemble the coffin. As soon as the bottom component and the lid have been finished, the coffin may be covered with cloth a3 desired. The lid may be screwed fast to the bottom component in standard manner because on the ends the transversal wood strips 24 have been provided.
In the foregoing has been presented a blank made of one single sheet of cardboard. If a smaller size of the package is desired in which the blanks come, the blank may be made of several parts.
One advantageous way is for instance that in which one part consists of the bottom 1 and one side wall 2 connecting therewith. The second part consists of a similar bottom 1 and the second side wall 2, connecting therewith. The end wall 4 and the half of the bottom 1 connecting therewith, and the other half of the bottom, constitute the third and fourth blank parts. A whole blank is obtained by placing the bottom parts upon each other. The bottom 1 will then be made up of three courses and is therefore sturdy without any reinforcements other than the gluing or stapling together of the parts. The smaller size, due to the parts, may be helpful in the transportation of the blanks, while at the same time the bottom of the coffin is made stronger. The partial blanks may be made such that they comprise each at least one side wall or one end and in addition thereto the whole bottom or part thereof.
Since as a rule the coffin is narrower at one end than at the other, there must also be a slight difference between the cuts and folds of the ends. In the example, the angle enclosed between the horizontal and vertical sides is about 72º in the blank. In the case of the lid, the corresponding angle is about 57º.
The coffin of the invention is inexpensive, and yet there is no difference in appearance, when it has been covered with cloth, from any wooden cloth-covered coffins. In some instances it may even be used without cloth covering. Although specifically intended for use as coffin, the same structure is applicable in connection with other caskets of similar type as well.
The structure and shape of the casket may be varied within the scope of the claims.

Claims
1. Blank for the lid or bottom of a coffin, made of cardboard or equivalent material, or such a blank composed of parts, which has been cut to desired shape and has been provided with folding scores, characterized in that the sides (2,4) of the blank have been provided with folding line scores (13,14,15,16,17,18) in such manner that within the confines of the vertical wall (2), the horizontal surface (5) of the fold and the folded part (6) which is folded downwards, likewise preferably within the confines of the horizontal surface (8) of the end wall (4) and the part (9) which is folded downwards, is obtained a channel with triangular cross section in the finished coffin.
2. Blank for coffin according to claim 1 , characterized in that the upper sides of the ends (4) of the blank have been provided with scores (16,17,18) for folding lines so that the cardboard can be turned in over a strip of wood (24) placed inside.
3. Blank for coffin according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the ends of the side walls (2) carry scores (21 ) for folding lines by which the end (3) of the side can be turned against the end (4) of the coffin.
4« Blank for coffin according to claim 1, 2 or 3, characterized in that from the parts (5,8) coming to lie in the horizontal plane of the side walls (2) and of the end walls (4) have been cut out pieces (19),20) for the angle juncture.
5» Blank according to claim 1, 2, 3 or 4, characterized in that it has been combined of a plurality of parts so that each part comprises at least one side wall (2) or one end wall (4) and the whole bottom (1) (or the roof respectively) or part thereof, the whole blank forming by fastening together the bottom parts (or the roof parts respectively).

A coffin made from a blank according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that it comprises horizontal strips of wood (24) on the top margins of the end walls (4) and against the ceiling surface of triangular channels constituted by the side walls (2), the horizontal surfaces (5) of the sides and the downwardly turned parts (6) e.g. reinforcement strips (22) affixed by gluing, their ends being affixed to the ends of the end strips (24) e.g. by stapling.
7» Coffin according to claim 6, characterized in that it has vertical strips of wood in the corners between the side walls (2) and the end walls (4).
8. Coffin according to claim 6 or 7, characterized in that the bottom component as well as the lid have been made of similar blanks and covered over with cloth as known in itself in the art.
