. The invention relates .to new and useful improvements in a heavy duty open top fiber container made from a single blank of fiber board which can' be assembled for walls and side walls will be firmly locked in assembled.
position by tabs on the end walls passing through slots in members carried by the side walls and wherein each tab is provided with an extension foldable against the side face of the tab for passage through the slot and turnable to the plane of the tab for locking engagement with the inner face of the-members carried by the side walls.
Another object of theinvention is toprovide a heavy duty open top fiber container of the above type wherein the side Walls are provided with extensions foldable into the container which extensionsengage the tabs and hold the locking extensions thereon in engagement with the inner face of the side walls.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a heavy duty open top fiber container of the above type wherein the half end walls are provided with extensions foldable into the container for locking the extensions on the side walls in assembled position.
These and other objects will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
In the drawin s which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the invention:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a blank which is cut and scored so that the open top heavy duty fiber container can be assembled therefrom; also showing in perspective the reenforcing members employed in the assembled container;
Figure 2 is a view partly in perspective and partly in section showing the bottom, portions of the side walls, the extensions carried thereby, the end wall and the half end wall members and the extension mounted thereon;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing the outer end wall and inner half end walls in assembled position;
Figure 4 is a view partly in vertical section and partly in side elevation and with the extensions on the side walls folded into the container into position for locking the tabs;
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4 but showing the half end wall extensions as folded into assembled position and interlocked with the side wall extensions;

The improved heavy duty open top fiber container is formed from a single blank of fiber board. The blank is cut and scored so that when assembled for use the container includes a bottom member having integrally connected therewith side and end members. The side members are provided with extensions which serve as half end members which in assembled position abut and form an inner end wall; said half end members are slotted at and close to the side members, and tabs formed integral with the outer end member extend through the slots. These tabs have fold over extensions which in folded position can pass through the slots and when returned to the plane of the tab the extension engages the inner face of the half end wall and locks the outer end walls in assembled position. Referring morein detail to the-drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of asingle fiber blank which is scored' and slit so that the blank may be folded into assembled position and. firmly secured without the used taping orstitching. The blank is scored along the linesl; 1 and 2, 2 to offset a bottom which is indicatedat B in the drawings. Extending along the sides of the bottom are side members separated from the bottom hythe score lines 1, 1. Also extending along the ends of the-bottom are end members E separated from-the bottom byscore: lines 2, 2. Thus the sides and ends of the container are formed integrallywith the bottom. Each side wall is provided with an extension S which is separated from the side wall by double score lines 8 and 9. It is noted that the side wall extension S is of substantially the same length as the side wall S at the portion thereof joining the side wall. This extension S is cut out so as to provide a shoulder 11.
Each half end wall E is provided with an extension E which extension is separated from the extension S by a slot 12 and the slot is offset toward the outer end of the half end wall extension E so as to provide a shoulder 13. The end wall is cut and scored so as to provide a hand hole 14 and also a flap 15 which is separated from the end wall member by double score lines 16 and 17; each side wall extension is provided with a half hand hole cut at 13 and each extension E is likewise provided with a half hand hole cut at 19. The manner of assembling the various parts of applicants open top heavy duty container will be obvious from Figures 2 to 5 of the drawings. In Figure 5 the side members are shown raised to a vertical position. The extensions E on the side members are folded to vertical position and also to abutted relation; the end wall E is raised to the position shown in Figure 2. The extension 6 on the tabs 5 are folded flat against the inner face of the tabs and then the tab is extended through the slot 4 in the half end walls E. The reason for making the upper end of the slot double the thickness of the fiber board is to permit this folded extension to pass with the tab through the slot. In Figure 3 the tabs have been passed all the way through the slot and the extensions returned to the plane of the tabs, and this brings the extensions into engagement with the inner face of the half end walls.
The side wall extensions are then folded down against the tabs 5 and their extensions 6 as shown in Figure 4. This looks the extension in its position lying in the plane of the tab so that the end wall E is securely locked to these half end walls by the tabs.
It is noted that the extension S is separated from the side wall S by double score lines and this permits the extension to fold down over the tabs. It also provides a very nice smooth top edge 23. The lugs 21 are then folded inwardly at right angles to the plane of the end wall. The flap 15 is folded through the hand hole and extends upwardly in substantially vertical plane. The reenforcing members 22 are then placed on the lugs and in behind the extending portion 15 of the flap. These renforcing members 22 abut against the side wall extensions S.
The extensions E carried by the half end walls E are then folded down into the container. The double score lines between the extension E and the half end walls E permit the extensions to be folded across the upper face of the reenforcing members 22 and thence down into the container as shown in Figure 5. The bottom portions of the side wall extensions S can be sprung outwardly sufiicient to permit the extensions 24 to pass to the position shown in Figure 5 where they will slip into the cut-away portions on the side wall extensions S, bringing the shoulders 11 and 13 into engagement, thus locking the extensions A in their assembled position. The reenforcing member 22 lies just above the hand hole, and this makes a very firm grip for the hands of the carrier.
It will be noted that the blank can be folded into assembled position without the use of any tools and the members will be interlocked and all of this is accomplished without the use of tape or stitching. The container has, as illustrated, triple end walls and double side walls and the bottom can be readily reenforced by an insert if found desirable.
The container above described is particularly adapted for use as a bottle carrier, although it may be used for other purposes because of its strength and durability. When used as a bottle carrier the usual separating partitions will be placed therein.
It is obvious that many changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
A heavy duty fiber open top container comprising, a
bottom, side and end walls formed integral therewith, said side walls having extensions at the ends thereof forming half end wall members abutting each other, each half end wall member having a slot at and along the side wall to which it is attached, each end wall having a holding tab of a width substantially equal to the length of the slot and a foldable extension adapted when folded against the tab to pass through said slot and when folded into the plane of the tab to make locking engagement with the inner face of the half end wall member, each side wall member having an extension foldable down into the container and into holding engagement with the tabs, and each half end wall member having an extension foldable down into the container and having interlock holding engagement with said side wall extension, each end member and the half end members and the extensions thereon having hand holes in alignment, said end wall member having a tab scored so as to extend inwardly through the hand hole in the half end members and thence upwardly and a reenforcing member located between said half end members and the extensions thereof and extending from side to side of the container in abutted relation with the extensions on the side members, said half end members having lugs cooperating with said tab for supporting said reenforcing member.
