Description

PATENTED OCT. 15, 1907.
W. L. GRAHAM. WAGON END GATE. APPLICATION mum 13120.26. 1908.
, Mme
WILSON L. GRAHAM, OF ASHLAND, ILLINOIS.
WAGON END-GATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15, 1907.
Application filed December 26,1906. Serial No. 349,581,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WiLsoN L. GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Cass and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon End-Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in end gates for nag-ens and it has particular reference to an end gate embodying hinged sections.
In connection with an end gate of the above type the invention aims to provide novel means for detachably locking said sections at their ends to the sides of the. wagon and in pivotal relation thereto.
It is also an object of the invention to provide an end gate which shall be exceedingly simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and practical and efficient in use.
The detailed construction will appear in the course of the following description in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, like characters of reference designating like parts throughout the several views, wherein,
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating an end gate constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal se tion thereof, and Figs. 3 and l are detailed perspective views of elements to be hereinafter specifically referred to.
Referring specifically to the accompanying drawings the letter A designates the body of the wagon and the letter 13 its end gale comprising the pivoted sections b which are hinged as at C l to swing outwardly. One of the sections 6 has an extension or arm D which at its outer end is slotted as at d to receive a staple E carried by the other section b. In order to positively lock said sections in the closed relation of the end gate, a swinging hook e is provided on the extension D which engages in the staple E as a catch.
The invention specifically resides in the castings shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the casting 1 shown in Fig. being secured to the sides of the wagon and the cast.- ing 2 shown in Fig. 4 being secured to the ends of the gate sections b. The casting 1 is formed with spaced longitudinal flanges 13 between which a longitudinal groove or recess 4 occurs. At one side of said casting 1 there is, preferably at a central point, an angular lug or car 5, having a transverse slot 6 therein. The body portion of said casting is apertured at 7 for the reception of fastening means. At the top of the casting 1 there is a horizontal apcrtured ear 8 by which binding ropes, standards or other fastening devices may be secured. The casting 2 has openings 9 for the reception of fastening means to secure the same to the ends of the gate sections b. Said casting 2 has at one edge an off-set rounded shoulder 10 which in the engaged relat-ionof the parts is received in the groove or recess. The shoulder 10 is provided at an approximately central point with an angular lug 11 which engages in the slot 6 of the lug or ear 5. It is to be noted that said slot communicates with the groove or recess 4 and in terrupts the rearmost flange 3.
In practical use the parts are engaged as is shown in Fig. 2, the shoulder 10 being received in inter-litting relation in the groove or recess 4 and the lug 11 being received in the slot 6 of the lug or ear 5. When the sections b b are locked together through the means described; the gate is positively held against displacement from the wagon by the engagement of the castings 1 and 2 as above set forth. When, however, it is desired to remove the gate from the wagon, the sections are unlocked by disengaging the hook e from the staple E and by swinging them outwardly as is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. In this action the lug ll. serves as a pivot about which the ends of the sections 1) have a limited movement. When said sections are swung to the dotted line position shown, the shoulder 10 will be withdrawn from the groove or recess i, and when said shoulder has been disengaged from said groove or recess, the sections are independently moved 011 their hinged joints in order that the leg 11 may be disengaged from the slot 6. In placing the end gate in position the lugs 11 are first engaged with the adjacent lug or car 5, and the sections are then locked together as shown in full lines in Fig. 2. In this operation the shoulders 10 are forced into the groove or recesses 4 in the manner set forth.
While the elements herein shown and described are' well adapted to serve the functions set forth, it is obvious that various minor changes may be made in the proportions, shape and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I-Iavin full described in invention I claim:
it; y y The combination with a wagon-body having castings detachably secured to the sides thereof, said castings being formed with spaced parallel flanges extending longitudinally thereof at right angles to the sides of the wagon, an ear parallel to said flanges having a transverse recess therein. and horizontal ears extending laterally beyond the sides of the wagon, of an end-gate adapted to be associated with said wagon-body and having castings on the ends thereof interlocking with said wagon-body castings, said end gate castings comprising flat members attached thereto. and a shoulder offset therefrom and extending on a plane with said end-gate, said shoulder being adapted to engage within the space between said flanges, and having a lug projecting at right angles therefrom, designed for re ception within said recessed ear, substantially as described.
in testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of witnesses.
WILSON L. GRAHAM.
