IMPROVEMENT IN MANUFACTURING COUNTERS FOR BOOTS.AN.D SHOES.`
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 86,779, dated February 9, 1,869.
To all whom 4it may concern:
Beitkiiownthatl, S. C. PHINNEY, of Stoughton, in the county of Norfolkl and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture'of Boots and Shoes and I do hereby declare that the followin gis afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make anduse the same, vreference being had to 'the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification. I
This inventioure'lates to an improvement in the method of cutting leather in the manufacture of boots and' shoes; and it consists in so cutting the leather that a great saving is secured in both material and labor, as will be hereinafter more fully described.

My invention applies to thecounters of boots and shoes, which. counters, in the process of manufacture, have to be scarfed or beveled off, as seen in the drawing at A. The counters or Shanks7 are ordinarily cut square, or with the edge at right angles with the side of the leather, and they are then scarfed off with the shoe-knife. In carrying out my invention, I cut the leather to the exact shape, or separate the leather, as seen in Fig. 1, at A, Where the scarf is indicated by the dotted line. By separating the leather in this manner a large percentage in the material is saved, and the labor is greatly lessened. In making this cut, it will be noticed that the true curve is preserved, so that in ordinary cases no alteration is necessary. with a machine constructed for the purpose, but do not confine myself to the use of any inachine for the operation.
I claim as nevir and desire to secure 'by Letters Patent- Separating leather, as herein described, for the purposes speciiied, with the curve and the proper scarf-edge, Without waste, substantially as set forth.
