Description

P'ATENTBD OCT. 8, 1907. G. G. WITT. HINGE.
APPLICATION FILED 001229. 19.06.

AWE/W01?` Attorney l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HINGE Speeiieation of Letters Patent.
Patented oct. s, 1907.
Application tiled October 29, 1906. Serial No. 341,113.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. WITT, a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State oi Ohio, have invented certain new and useiul Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a iull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in hinges, and more particularly4 to hinges for reproo receptacles, which prevent the raising el 'the hinged cover to or beyond the center oi gravity, and hence compel the cover to close by gravity when released.
With this object in view, the invention consists in certain novel features oi construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more iully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section illustrating my improvements as applied to a fire-proof receptacle; Fig. 2 is a top plan view; Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are enlarged detail views oi the hinge. v
1 represents the can body or receptacle, which is prei'erably, although not necessarily, made oi corrugated l`orm and having feet supporting the can body\ above the l'ioor.
2 represents the can cover, which is provided with a depending lange 3 to engage over the upper ring end ol the body l and tightly close the body. The flange 3 is cut away so as not to interfere with the metal strap 4 secured to the body ring, The ends of the strap 4 are bent outward iorming arms 5 constituting members of my improved hinge. Arms 6 are formed at the ends of straps 7 secured to the flange 3 of cover 2, and these arms 6 lie beside arms 5 and constitute other members ol the hinge, said arms 5 and 6 being pivotally'con- .nected by bolts'or rivets 8, located in alined openings in the arms.
Between both pairs oi arms or hinge members 5 and 6, my improved stops 9 are located, and may be made of sheet metal as shown, or of thin castings or wire, and I do not restrict myself in this particular.
When made of sheet metal7 the stops are in the iorm oi tri-angular plates having openings to receive the bolts or rivets 8, and provided at their upper and lower edges with oppositely turned flanges or shoulders 10, the upper iianges 10 projecting over the arms or hinge members 6 and the lower iianges 10 lying below the arms or hinge members 5. It will thus be seen, that in raising the can cover 2, the stops 9 will permit such movement only until the arms 6 engaging the upper ianges 10 move the stops until the lower anges 10 engage arms 5, and as the cover will be stopped before reaching a vertical position, it must fall by gravity to a closed position, when released.
A great many slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention and hence I do not restrict myself 'to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is l. The combination with hinge members pivotally secured together, of a stop between the hinge members comprising a triangular plate having oppositely projecting lateral flanges at its upper and lower edges to limit the movement o1 the hinge members.
2. The combination with a receptacle and a cover there-K for, of outwardly projecting arms on the body, outwardly projecting arms on the cover, bolts or rivets pivotally connecting said arms, stops between the arms comprising tri-angular plates having openings to receive the bolts or rivets and oppositely projectinglateral flanges at the upper and lower edges ot' the plates.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presenceof two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE C. \VIT'T.
