Description

No. 867,524. PATENTED OCT. 1, 1907.
, T. D. MAQGREGOR.
SHIRT CUFF APPLICATION FILED FEB. '1. 100a.
Izmir Z0)" With/@5566 UNITED STATES Ana Fro" SHIRT-CUFF.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1, 1907.
Application filed February 7,1906. Serial No. 299,937.-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS DUNCAN MACGREGOR, of Peterborough, in the county of Peterborough and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirt-Cuffs; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to a shirt cuff which can be attached to or detached from the wrist band of a shirt sleeve, and to a fastening means by which it can be detachably connected to a coat sleeve when it is not desired to attach it to the sleeve of the shirt; and the object of the invention is to so arrange this fastening means that it will always hold the shirt cuff, when so attached, in a fixed position with relation to the sleeve of the coat, and the invention consists essentially of a shirt cuff comprising a cuff band and a cuff holding member, either permanently or detachably connected thereto projecting beyond the outer surface of the cuff band to enter a correspondingly shaped pocket in the coat sleeve, and a detent means for the cuff holding member to prevent its accidental withdrawal from the pocket, as hereinafter more fully set forth and more particularlypointed out in the claims.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shirt cuff with a cuff holding member attached to its outer surface. Fig. 2 is a view of, a shirt cuff with a slot formed in the cuff band to receive a detachable cuff holding member. Fig. 3 is a perspective view ofa detachable cuff holding member to be used with the shirt cuff shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view of a section of a coat sleeve showing the pocket for receiving the cuff holding member. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a coat sleeve and cuff with the cuff holding member contained in the pocket.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and drawings.
The cuff consists of a cuff band a having the usual button holes I) for the cuff buttons and the usual button holes a for the cuff holders. As shown in Fig. 1, a cuff holding member if is sewn or otherwise attached to the cuff band a and projects from its outer surface in termediate its top and bottom edges 6 and f and is preferably located at one side of an imaginary line inter mediate its side edgesg and h. The cuff holding member d is preferably formed of the same material as the cuff band a and is of any suitable dimensions, such dimensions being sufiicient however to enable the cuff holding member d to securely attach the cuff to the coat sleeve lining i. To prevent the accidental detachment of the cuff holding member d from the coat sleeve the former is provided with a detent catch j either forming an integral part of the cuff holding member or securely connected thereto, the free edge of the l detent catch projecting in the reverse direction to the free edge of the cuff holding members. The cuff holding member and detent catch may be made of different material from the cuff band and detachably connected thereto, as shown inFigs. 2 and 3, in which case'the cuff band a is formed with a slot is through which the detachable cuff holding member 1 projects. The cuff holding member in this latter case is similar in all respects to the cuff holding member above described and shown in Fig. l, but is provided with an enlargement m to engage the inner surface of the cuff band around the slot is and prevent the inner end of the cuff holding member being withdrawn through the slot. To attach the cuff band to the coat sleeve the lining t of the latter is formed with a pocket 0 having a mouth 1) at the middle thereof to permit of the entry of the-cuff holding member therein. The cuff holding member engages the pocket 0 at one side of the mouth 1) and the detent catch engages it at the other side when contained therein to prevent the accidental withdrawal of the cuff holding member therefrom. The engagement of the cuff holding member and the detent catch with the pocket holds the cuff suspended within the coat sleeve and maintains the cuff in a fixed position with relation thereto. When it is necessary to detach the cuff from the coat sleeve the cuff holding member is so positioned within the pocket 0 that the safety catch. j can protrude through the mouth 12 and when so positioned the cuff holding member can be easily withdrawn therefrom. By placing the cuff holding member intermediate the topand bottom edges 0 and f it is possible to reverse the exposed edge of the cuff in the coat sleeve, but when the cuff holding member is located at one side of the middle line between the side edges 9 and h it will be necessary when reversing the exposed edges to interchange the shirt cuffs in the coat sleeves.
Having thus fully described. my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;
1. The herein described article of manufacture consisting of the cuff band, the cuff holding member projecting beyond the outer surface of the cuff band intermediate its edges, a detent moans for the cuff holding member and means for detachably connecting the cuff holding member to the cuff band.
2. The herein described article of manufacture comprising a cuff band and a cull" holding member projecting from the outer surface of the cuff band intermediate its edges in combination with a garment sleeve and a pocket therein to receive the cuff holding member.
3. The herein described article of manufacture com prising a cuff band, a cuff holding member projecting from the outer surface of the cuff band intermediate its edges and a detent catch for the cuff holding member in combination with a garment sleeve and a pocket therein to receive the cuff holding member and detent catch.
Toronto, January 30th, A. D. 1906.
THOMAS DUNQAN MACGREGOR.
