To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT M. Doornn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leggings, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in leggings and more particularly to that class of leggings in which one side overlaps the other and the object of the same is to provide an improved device of this character which is of tubular formation and improved means for supporting the inner end formed by folding or lapping the body portion of the legging.

A further object is to provide an improved device of this character containing a single fastening means and improved means for dispensing with the fasten ing means for the inner end of the legging, which will support or hold the body portion smooth and prevent the same from becoming wrinkled or creased by the strain of the single fastening means.

To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects, as will appear, the invention consists of the features of novelty in the construction, combination and arrangement as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and shown in the accompanying drawing, illustrating an exemplification of the invention and'in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of one side of an improved legging constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the opposite side of Fig. 1. Fig.3 is a transverse sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view similar to Fig. 3 but with the legging unfastened or open and ready to be applied. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view showing the overlapping portion of the body of the legging and the supporting stays or braces.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, and in this exemplification of the invention, the numeral 10 designates generally the body portion of the legging, which may be constructed of any suitable flexible material, such as canvas, duck or the like, and may also be constructed of a single piece or in suitable sections secured together.

The end 11 is secured to the body portion 10 at a point remote from the other end thereof, in any suitable manner, such as by means of stitching.

The end 12 is continued beyond the meeting point of the end 11 with the body portion 10 and is prefer ably reduced to form a centrally disposed flap 13. Secured to this flap 13 is one member 14 of a suitable fastening device, the other member 15 thereof being secured to the body portion 10 and at a point to be engaged by the member 14 when the legging is in position upon the leg of the wearer, as will be set forth.

A suitable supporting brace-or stay 16 is secured to the body portion 10 adjacent the meeting point of the edge 11 therewith, and said brace or stay preferably extends from the top to the bottom of the body portion. A similar brace or stay 17 is secured to the body portion beyond the meeting point of the edge 11 and said brace or stay 17 also preferably extends from the top to the bottom of the legging. These stays or braces are parallel with and spaced from each other for a purpose to be set forth. I

Any suitable means, such as a strap 18 or the like, may be secured by one end to the bottom of the legging and said strap is adapted to pass under the arch of the foot to prevent the legging from riding up. The free end of this strap may be secured to the opposite side of the legging in any suitable manner, such as by means of a buckle 19.

In operation the legging is opened, as shown in Fig. 4, and the foot of the wearer is inserted through the tubular portion of the legging so that it may be drawn onto the leg. After it is in position, the flap 13 is passed or wound around the leg and drawn tightly. This operation will cause the brace or stay 16to pass over the brace or stay 17 and assume a position behind said brace or stay 17. As the brace or stay 16 moves over the brace or stay 17, the portion of the body of the legging located between the two will be folded as at 20 to cause the legging to closely fit and conform to the shape of the leg of the wearer. The legging will be held in this position by means of the fastening members 14 and 15. It will be noted that with such an arrangement, the free or inner end of the body portion 10 will be supported and braced by the stay 17, which will prevent said inner end from sagging. The brace or stay 16 will also serve to support the outer portion of the body adjacent the stay 17 and will hold the same smooth and prevent it from being wrinkled or creased when drawn over by the flap 13.

A legging of this construction may be readily applied without the necessity of holding the free or inner end to permit the body portion to be wrapped around the leg as is usual and also dispenses with the necessity of fastening means for supporting the inner end and holding the same from sagging.

If desired, the legging may be adjusted to vary its size by means of the fastening members 14, 15 and when in position upon the leg it not only presents a smooth outer surface to prevent laceration of an animal when used as a riding legging but also has the appearance of a closely wrapped legging.

In order that the invention might be fully understood, the details of an embodiment thereof have been thus specifically described.

What I claim is z 1. In combination, a legging comprising a flexible body, one end thereof being secured to the body portion at a point remote from the other end to form a tubular portion,

fastening means for the free end, and a supporting stay secured to the body portion adjacent the meeting point of the other edge therewith, said body portion being adapted to be folded adjacent the stay when the free end'is fastened in position.

2. In combination, a legging comprising a flexible body, one end of which is secured to the body portion at a point remote from the other end to form a tubular portion, fastening means for the free end, and supporting stays secured to the body portion one on each side of and adjacent the meeting point of the other edge therewith, one of said stays being adapted to be brought over the other stay to told that portion of the body adjacent the latter stay when the free end is secured in position.

3. In combination, a legging comprising a flexible body, one end of which is secured to the body to form a tubular portion, the other end extending beyond the meeting point and being reducedto form a centrally disposed fastenin flap, fastening members respectively on the body and the flap, and stays secured to the body portion one on opposite sides of the meeting point of the edge therewith and spaced from each other, one of said stays being adapted io be passed over the other and against the body to told that portion of the body adjacent to the latter stay, when the fastening members are brought into engagement.
