Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN J. LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soap Holders and Graters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has for its object to provide an improved soap holder and grater, especially adapted for use in public wash rooms, and to this end it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the drawings; Figure 1 is a planview with cover removed, showing the improved soap holder and grater. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation with some parts broken away, showing the improved soap holder and grater. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section taken on the line x of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section taken on the line at x of Fig. 1.

The numeral 1 indicates a rectangular box or holder which, in practice, is secured by screws to a wall or other suitable support in a convenient place for use.

The holder 1 is provided with a hinged cover 2,

adapted to be locked in its closed position by a suitable lock, not shown. The upper portion 3 of one-of the ends of said holder is made separate and is hinged to the lower portion of said end by a pair of hinges 4. To hold the said hinged end portion 3 in its closed position, it is provided with a pair of spring hooks 5, adapted to hook over cooperating pins 6 secured to and projecting from the sides of said holder 1. A shaft 8 projects through the two sides of said holder and is mounted to rotate therein. One of the projecting ends of the shaft 8 terminates in a crank 9, for the purpose of rotating said shaft. A grater, in the form of a cylinder 10, is rigidly mounted on the shaft 8 and caused to rotate therewith. Said cylinder 10 is of such width as to freely work between the two sides of the holder 1. As shown, the bottom of the holder is cut away at 11 to permit its lower portion of the grater 10 to work through the same.

A spring pressed follower 12, working within the holder 1 and between the two sides thereof, yieldingly presses a cake of soap Z against the grater 10. A large coiledspring 13 is compressed between the hinged end portion 3 and the follower 12. To hold the follower 12 in close engagement with the bottom of the holder, and also in a vertical position, a long spring rod 14 is rigidly secured to the central portion of the hinged end portion 3, and projects through the central portion of the spring 13 and through a perforation in said follower 12. A brace 15, carried by said follower 12, is also adapted to be engaged by said spring rod 14 and tends to hold said follower in an upright position.

A long pair of parallel springrods 16 are secured, one to each side of the hinged end portion 3. These project through slots 17 cut in the follower 12, their free ends normally resting upon the cake of soap Z to hold the same on the bottom of the holder 1, as the grater 10 is rotated.

As is evident, by turning the hinged end portion 3 into the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3, the follower 12,

15 and 16, and the coiled spring 13 may be removed from the holder 1 for the purpose of inserting a new piece of soap, from time to time.

Secured to the bottom of the holder 1 is a receptacle 18 located directly beneath the opening 11 in the bottom of the holder 1, and this is adapted to receive the powdered soap from the grater 10. The bottom 19 of the receptacle 18 is hinged at 20, and is normally held in a closed position by a light spring 21.

A notched disk 22 is pivotally mounted on a suitable bracket 23 secured to one side of the holder 1. As shown, the disk 22 is provided with six notches. To the shaft 8 there is rigidly secured a projecting finger 24 adapted to enter the slots of the disk 22 to impart a step by step movement thereto. For each rotation of the shaft 8, the disk 22 will be given one-sixth of a rotation. The pivot rod of the hinge 20 is, as shown, bent at right angles, projects upward and terminates in a camiinger 25, adapted to be engaged by a pair of pins 26 secured to and projecting from the disk 22. Said pins 26 are set 180 degrees apart. A light spring 27, secured to the bracket 23, normally holds the notched disk 22 against accidental displacement. The parts just enumerated, are located on the outside of the holder 1, and are protected by a suitable housing 28. As is evident, by rotating the grater 10, and holding the hand under the receptacle 18, for each third revolution of the grater 10 the hinged bottom 19 of said receptacle 18 will open through the action of the pins 26 on the cam finger 25, and discharge the soap in powdered form, contained within the receptacle 18, into the hand. As soon as the cam finger 25 has passed out of engagement with the pins 26, the bottom 19- will be closed by the light spring 21. The pins 26 will, in practice, be made adjustable, so that one or more pins may be used, depending on the amount of soap desired to be discharged for each opening of the bottom 19 of the receptacle 18.

The device desciibed, while quite simple, convenient, and efiicient for the purpose had in View, is of comparatively small cost, and when applied in hotels or public buildings will not only prevent the soap from being stolen, but Will also prevent waste.

What I claim is 1. The combination with a holder and a follower within said holder, of a rotary grater within said holder, means for rotating said grater, a spring compressed between said holder and said follower to press the soap against said grater, a receptacle for receiving the soap in powdered form from said grater, and automatic means suitably mounted upon the holder for intermittently discharging the soap in powdered form from said receptacle, substantially as described.

'lhe combination with a holder and a follower within said holder, of a rotary grater mounted within said holder, a crank for operating said grater, a spring compressed between said holder and said follower to press the soap against said grater, a receptacle for receiving the soap in powdered form from said grater, a hinged bottom in said receptacle, and automatic means suitably mounted upon the holder for intermittently opening and closing said bottom to discharge the soap in powdered form, sub stantially as described.

3. The combination with a holder and a follower within said holder, of a rotary grater mounted within said holder, a crank for operating said grater, a spring compressed between said holder and said follower to press the soap against the grater, a receptacle for receiving the soap in powdered form from said holder, a hinged bottom in said receptacle and means suitably mounted upon the holder for yieldingly holding said bottom closed, :1, notched disk carried by said holder, an arm carried by said crank for engagement with said notched disk to cause the same to rotate by a step by step movement, and a cam linger secured to said bottom and adapted to be en aged by said notched disk to open said bottom to disch ge the soap in powdered form, substantially as described.

4. The combination with a holder and a follower within said holder, of a rotary grater mounted within said holder, a crank for operating said grater, a spring compressed between said holder and said follower to press the soap against the grater. a receptacle for receiving the soap in powdered form from said holder, a hinged bottom in said receptacle, :1 spring for holding said bottom closed, a notched disk carried by said holder, an arm c: ried by said crank for engagement with said notched disk to cause the same to rotate by a step by step movement, an adjnstable pin secured to said notched disk, and a cam finger secured to said bottom and adapted to be engaged by said adjustable pin to intermittently open said bottom to discharge the soap in powdered term, substantially as de scribed.
