' Specification of Letters Patent;
Patented Oct. 1, 1907'.
Application filed January 3,1 905,.SarialNo. 239,419. Renewed Marsh 4,1907.- Serial No. 360,498.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, HENRY F. BECHMAN, of Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Triplex Printing Presses; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
' This invention is an improvementin printing presses,
and relates particularly to 12 page fiat bed web presses of the duplex type, which I shall denominate a trimanner oiand means for threading a wide web and a narrow web through such triplex press in. such mannor that a wide web may be printed on two beds, and a embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view thereof showing the means for turning the narrow web.
The. press has three horizontal type beds A, A", A? ar ranged parallel, and one above the other in vertical narrow web printed and perfected on another bed.
. The invention will clearly be understood from the following description and drawings, and the essential features thereof for which protection is desired are set forth in the claims.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a longitudinal'sectional diagram through a complete triplex flat bed. press alinement. Go-acting with these beds are laterally reciprocating cylinders-a, a, a The'rnain or fourpage-wide'web W is led in from the roll through the between the bed A and cylinder a, back over upper folder, and the other part W passing over deflectingi folder.
' page news-paper.
guide 2', downunder upper looping roller 3, of the lower pair of looping rollers and thence up over suitable guides to the delivery rollers 1 where it is lbngitudinally divided, one part W passing direct to the guide f into the rollers andbars until it is brought into line with and beneath part W and then passes overguidef into the The parts so far shown and described for operating web W are substantially similar in construction and 'mode of'operation to like parts in the well known duplex press, and when a full width'web is used,- the product of the two lower printing couples is an eight The scond narrow or half-width web 'u), is led from a feeding roll, with which cooperate feed tapes 5 web' w passing thence over a guide 4 and under a guide 4", t0 and over a looping roller 3 down under a guide 4, thence backward above cylinder (1 to a' guide 4 at the rear of the press, under such guide and forward between bed A and cylinder 11 to and overt. guide 4, being imprinted on one side during this -first passage between bed A and'cylinder a From roller 4' the web passes down'under a looping roller 3, to and over a guide 4 and then to a feed-out roll 5*, assisted by tapes 5, and passes thence under a guide 10 up over a guide 11, over an angle bar 12, to and over a roll 13, back over an other angle bar 14, to and over a roller l5, and then back to and over roller 16d0wn under feed roll 5, to and over roll 4* down and "around roll 4 over looper 3 under guide 4 back over guide 4f, forward again between 2 bed A and cylinder a to ,roller 4, under looper 3 over guide 4" to feed roll 5", where delivery tapes 5 contact, then'to and under guide 10, up overa guide l7 and thence over roller f 2 to the folder, being superimposed on the webs W, W and folded therewith as one web in the folder. Y
The web w enters the press at the right hand side ofthe machine, and during its first passage between the bed and cylinder, is printed on one side by forms ar-' ranged at the far, or left hand',side of bed A it then passes through the deflector and turner (composed of ,the bars 12 and 1d and rollers 13 and 15), by which it is shifted to the near side of the machine, so that the secand passage length of web' '10- in the press between the bed and cylinder A, a, lies parallel with the first length of web 'w'therein, and receives its second or perfecting impressions from forms placed at the near or right hand side of bed A A I It will be observed that both lengths of web 'w'passing between bed A and cylinder a movein the samedirection and'time and are operated by the same feeding, looping, guiding and delivering devices; It will also be observed that the web w is not turned in the press;- by that I'mean between the points of its firstin-feed, and
first delivery, but instead is turned and deflected between the points of its first delivery and second in-feed;
this method of threading and turning is of great practurner by the action of the looping'devices, the danger of rupturing the web is much enhanced, and the speed of operation correspondingly restricted; but by turning :and deflecting the web out of the press, or between the points of first delivery and second in-feed thereof, I am enabled to keep it moving continuously through the turning and deflecting devices without the altemate; stoppage and starting or acceleration and retardation of movement imparted to that part of the web subject to the action of the looping rollers. By reason of such uniform continuous movement I can run the web with safety at much greater speed than is permissible when the web is turned or deflected while under the influence cylinders are not features of the present invention and will be readily understood by those skilled in the art. Of course the several sets of feeding, web looping, and delivering devices are all arranged to operate synchronously so that equal lengths of both webs will be fed in and delivered from the machine in the same times, and the product of the press, operated to its full capacity, will be twelve page news-papers; eight pages being produced fromweb W on the two lower beds and cylinders, and four pages from web 10 on the upper bed and cylinder.
I do not restrict myself to printing a full width web on the two-lower beds, and a half width web on the upper'bed, although this is the preferred construction and arrangement of parts.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. In a printing press, the combination of a plurality of printing couples each comprising a bed and co-actiug cylinder, means for feeding a web twice in .the same direction to one printing couple, means for delivering such web twice from said printing couple, and means for turning and defleeting such web between the point where it is first delivered from such couple by the delivery -means and the point where it is a second time fed thereto by the feeding l means; with means for directing another web through the other printing couples to be printed thereby, substantially as described.
2. In a printing press, the combination of a plurality of. printing couples. each consisting of a bed and co-acting cylinder, means for feeding a narrow width web twice in the same direction to one printing couple, means for deliv ering such web twice from said printing couple, and means for turning and deflecting the web between the point where it is first delivered from such couple and the point where it is a second time fed thereto; with means for directing a ,full width web through the other printing couples to be perfected thereby;substantially as described.
3. In a fiat bed web printing press, the combination of a plurality of printing couples each comprising a bed and co-acting cylinder, means for feeding a narrow width web twice into one printing couple, means for delivering such web twice from such couple, means for directing it twice in the same direction through such couple, and means for deflecting and turning such web between the point where it is first delivered from such couple by said delivery means and the second time fed thereto by said feeding means; with means for feeding a full width web to the other printing mechanism to be perfected thereby, substantially as set forth.
