I DAVID JOHN SCOTT, OF PLAIJTFIELD, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO ISABELLA SiCOTT AND DAVID J. SCOTT, EXECUTORS 0F WALTER SCOTT, DECEASED. I
WEB-PERFECTING MACHINE.
Original application filed April 2,1915, Serial No. 18,689. Divided and this application filed September 29,
1916. Serial No. 122,837.
Be it known that I, DAVID J. Soon, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Web-Perfect-' ing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates generally to offset perfecting machines and has more particularly reference to the general arrangement of the printing units composing such machine; and is a division of the application filed by me Apr. 2, 1915, Ser. No. 18,639.
The main object of the invention is to provide a machine in which both sides of the web are printed by the offset process, and without the omission of elements necessary to produce high class results; and in which the arrangement of cylinders is such that all the working parts will be readily acces sible.
Another object of this'invention is to provide means for conveniently controlling the Q the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1, looking in the direction of arrow 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail view, in elevation, of the Q first printing couple.
The machine comprises two units, each unit consisting of a form-carrying cylinder, a transfer cylinder and an impression cylinder. The form-carrying cylinder is marked a A in the first unit and B in the second unit,
while the transfer cylinder is marked C in the first unit and D in the second unit, and the impression cylinder is marked E in the first unit and F in the second unit. The
form-carrying and transfer cylinders of each umt. are arranged to form an exposed operating side with the impression cylinder non- Patented Nov. 12, 1918.
shown as a roll of paper, and L indicates a I delivery mechanism conveniently represented as a former folder, said source and said delivery bein arranged end to end and located alongside t e printing units and nonadjacent to the operating sides thereof but adjacent the impression cylinders. The source I is opposite the first unit and the delivery is opposite the second unit; and, in-
termediate the units, the source and the delivery are devices for guiding the paper which, in the present instance, .take the following form: The web X is led from source I over guide rollers X straight across to the impression cylinder E of the first print ing unit. From thence the paper passes around cylinder E and back to turner bar X where it is given a quarter turn, and passes over to turner bar X where it .receives another quarter turn that directs it to unit. The paper then passes around said impression cylinder F to guide rollers X and thence to the delivery L. The paper, in passing from the impression member of the first printing unit to the impression member of the second unit, has been re versed so that the printed side will come in contact with the surface of impression cylinder F. Also, the paper in passing to and from impression cylinder F is doubled-back upon itself; and, intermediate the web runs .of this double-back portion, there is interposed an anti-smutting device 37 engaging impression member F of the second printing with the surface of impression cylinder F.
The anti-smutting device 37 is for the purpose of preventing the printed side of the paper from soiling the surface of impression cylinder F.
Associated with each form-carrying cylinder is an inking mechanism 0, and, should the character of the work require it, dampening mechanisms N.
54 indicates sliding boxes in which transcontrolled from operating handles 34: whereby said transfer cylinders may be moved for cylinders C and D are mounted, and are outwardly of the operating side of the units to admit of manipulation by the pressman. Likewise, impression cylinders E and F are mounted in sliding boxes 54 controlled from handles 35 whereby said impress sion cylinders may be thrown off the transfer cylinders. The anti-smutting device 37 is mounted on the sliding box 54 of impression cylinder F so that the two are moved bodily in unison. This feature is claimed in a companion application, Serial No. 122,833, filed Sept. 29, 1916, as is also the broad feature of interposing the antismutting device between the double-back portions of the web. The dampening mechanisms N may be thrown 0d the form carrying cylinders A and B by means of handles 38.
What is claimed, is:
1. A rotary oflset perfecting machine comprising: a plurality of units printing from positive forms on opposite sides of impression receiving material, each unit consisting of a form-carrying, a transfer and an impression cylinder all of substantially the same diameter, the formcarrying and transfer cylinders being arranged in an upright column and the impression cylinder being arranged out of line with the other cylinders to aiford an exposed operating side for the unit, said units being grouped with their operating sides outermost and with their cylinders end to end, a source of impression receiving material, delivery mechanism located non-adjacent to the operating sides of the units, and. means between said units, said source and said delivery mechanism for feeding the impression receiving material to the impression cylinder of one unit, transferring it to the impression cylinder of the other unit and then transferring it to the delivery mechanism.
