Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY F. BEoHMAN, of Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Presses and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention is an improvement in flat bed type printing web presses of the well known duplex type, such as disclosed in patent to Joseph L. Cox No. 478,503, dated July 5, 1892,and the object of the present invention is to render such a press capable of printing any number of pages from two to sixteen, by twos; thus practically doubling the capacityof the duplex press by combining therewith suitable printing and web manipulating devices, and utilizing the Web controlling mechanism of the old portion of the press to control the web manipulating portions of the new, and also utilizing the web reciprocating mechanism of the old press to actuate the additional impression cylinders.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description of the machine illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a comp lete sixteen-page duplex press, and Fig. 2 1s a diagrammatical longitudinal sectlonal view thereof.
The press contains two lower type beds 1 and 2, and two upper type beds 1 and 2.
' The beds 1 and 2, are in substantially the same horizontal plane. The beds 1 2" are in substantially the same horizontal plane and superposed above the beds 1 and 2. The beds 1, 1 are parallel, one over the other; and so are the beds 2, 2*; All the beds'are rigidly supported in the side frames of the press.
Co-acting with the beds 1, 1 are cyllnders 1 1, and co-acting wlth type beds 2, 2 are cylinders 2", 2. The cylinders 1", 1 are journaled in cross heads 3, WlllOll are slidably mounted upon the side frames of the press, as in the duplex machine, and are reciprocated back and forth, so as to move the cylinders over the beds by means of pitman rods 3 connected with crank wheels 3 as in the duplex machine. The cylinders 2*, 2 are similarly journaled 1n cross heads 3 also slidably mounted on the sides of the main frame and connected to the cross heads 3,, by rods 3 as shown, so that both sets of cylinders will be reciprocated simultaneously back and forth from the crank wheels 3 These crank wheels are driven by gearing from the main shaft as is usual in the duplex presses.
Each pair of beds and cylinders is ada ted to print a web of paper and can produce eight printed newspaper pages from each web, from type forms placed on the bed, so that when the press is in full operation sixteen pages or less can be produced in multiples of twos, but when eight pages or less are to be produced it is desirable to put one of the printing mechanisms out of operation.
A web w may be led in over guides 4 through the feeding rolls 4 up over a looping roller 1", down under guide 4, in over a guide f, (traveling with cylinder 1 then between bed 1 and cylinder 1 then up over roller 4, (traveling with cylinder 1 under and over rollers 4 and 4 to roller 4}, (traveling with cylinder 1 down between cylinder 1 and bed 1*, up over guide 4 (traveling with cylinder 1 to and over guide 4 down under a second looping roller 4; and up to the delivering mechanism 4 where the web is split; then down under guide 4 and one-half of it passes over turner 4 and guides 4?, 41 to the folding mechanism F, while the other half passesdirect over roll P to the folder, the two halves of the web being superposed and assembled at the folder, as is usual in the duplex presses. The feeding in rolls 4* and the delivery mechanism 4 are constructed and operated as in the ordinary duplex press and need no detailed description herein. So are the looping rollers 4, 4 which are mounted on reciprocating bars 5 actuated by lever 5 operated by a cam 5 on a shaft 5, as usual in the duplex resses.
A Web 0' paper 20 may be led in, from a roll V at the opposite end of the press, under a guide 6 through feeding-in mechanism 6 (similar to 4. then over looping roller 6, (similar to 1") down under a guide 6 to and over cylinder guide 6 then between bed 2 and cylinder 2 up over cylinder guide 6 to, under and over guides 6 6 back over cylinder guide 6 down between bed 2 and cylinder 2, up over cylinder guide 61 to guide 6 then to the second looping roller 6 (similar to 4 then up to delivering mechanism 6 (similar to the delivering mechanism 4 and thence passes to guide 6 where it is split and one-half the web passes over turner 6, and guide 6 to the folder F, and the other half of the web passes over guide 6 to the folder; the two parts of the web w being superposed and assembled on the former with the two halves of the web w so that the products of both presses are assembled at the folder and delivered as one paper.
The feeding devices 6 are driven in unison with the feeding devices 4 by means of a train of gears 6 driven by a bevel gear 6 meshing with a bevel gear 7 on a countershaft 7, which is driven by a bevel gear 7*, meshing with a bevel gear 5*, driven by gear 5 and meshing with gear 5 on shaft 5 The delivery mechanism 6' is driven in unison with the feed and with the delivery mechanism 4" by means of a train of gears 6 driven from the gear 6 as indicated in Fig. 1, of the drawings. Any other suitable gearing may be adopted for driving the feeding and delivery mechanism of the press in unison. The shaft 7 may be made in sections. and provided with a coupling member 7 and by properly shifting this coupling the feed and delivery mechanism 6, 6 for the web 111 can be put out of operation.
The looping rollers 6, 6 are mounted on a bar 8, corresponding to bar 5, and are operated from bar 5, by means of bell-crank levers 8*, 5 and connecting rod 8*. One arm of lever 5 is connected with bar 5, and the short arm is connected by link 8 to the short arm of lever 8 the long arm of which is connected to bar 8. Consequently the two sets of looping rollers 4, 4: and 6, 6 will be operated in unison by and from the one set of controlling cams 5. The link 8' may have its end engaging [lever 5 hooked as at 8, so that it can be detached from the lever 5 if it should be desired to throw the looping mechanism 6 6 out of operation, as would be desirable if the feeding mechanism 6 and delivery mechanism 6 were out of operation, or no web was being printed on the beds 2, 2. Any other disconnectible connections between the two sets of web manipulating devices might be employed, and where only eight pages or less are to be printed, it might be desired to cut one set of cylinders out of operation and for this purose the connecting rod 3 might be detached from the cross head 3, in any suitable manner.
When the press is threaded as shown in Fig 2, of the drawings, any number of pages over eight and up to sixteen can be produced by using a full width web to, and a two, four, six, or eight page web 'w The machine can also be used to print one web in multi-color if desired, in which case, for example, the web 10 might be stripped from the machine and the web w after being printed on one side by bed 1 and cylinder 1*, is carried directly on to and between bed 2, and cylinder 2, following the course of web 'w until it reaches the guide 6 and then it may be passed on to the delivery 6, or across and between the bed 1 and cylinder 1, and thence to the delivery 4. In the first instance it could receive a black color from bed 1, and a multicolor on bed 2, on the same side of the web, and be perfected in black on 2 In the second case it could be printed in black on bed 1, in another color on the same side on bed 2,- another color on the opposite side on bed 2 and be perfected in black on bed 1". If desired the web could be passed through the feed rolls 6 between the beds 1 and 2, and could be passed over the looping mechanisms 6", 6 between the printing mechanisms. It will be obvious that the press can be threaded to print and perfect one web in color in various ways and it can also be threaded to print upon one side of the web only.
The feature of the present invention is the provision of four beds and four cylinders, and two feeding and two delivery mechanisms operated synchronously and from the same controlling means whereby any desired number of pages up to sixteen can be printed in one color and eight or less pages can be printed in multi-color.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a printing press, the combination of the side frames, a pair of beds therein arranged end to end in substantially the same plane, a second pair of beds arranged parallel with and substantially in a plane above that of the first beds, impression cylinders co-acting with the beds, a web feeding mechanism at one end of the press, a second web feeding mechanism intermediate the pairs of beds, a web looping mechanism, web delivering mechanism, web guides for directing webs through the press, a folder, and means for directing the webs from the delivery mechanism to the folder.
2. In a flat-bedweb-printing press, the combination of two type beds in substantially the same plane, two additional type beds in a plane above and parallel with that of the first type beds, an impression cylinder co-acting with each type bed, means for reciprocating said cylinders, web feeding, looping and delivering mechanism at the outer end of the first pair of type beds, a similar set of web feeding, looping and delivering mechanism intermediate the pairs of type beds; and web guides whereby webs may be directed between the beds and cylinders to be printed thereby. 3. In a printing press, the combination of the side frames, a pair of beds therein ar ranged end to end in substantially the same plane, a second pair of beds arranged paralel with and above the first beds, impression cylinders co-acting with the beds, a web feeding mechanism at one end of the press, a second web feeding mechanism intermediate the pairs of beds, a web looping mechanism adjacent each feeding mechanism, web delivering mechanism, web guides for directing webs through the press, a folder, and means for directing the webs from the delivery mechanism to the folder.
4. In a flat-bed-web printing press, the combination of two adjacent type beds in substantially the same plane, two additional type beds above and parallel with the first type beds, an impression cylinder co-acting with each type bed, means for reciprocating said cylinders, web feeding, looping and delivering mechanism at the outer end of the first pair of type beds, a similarset of web feeding, looping and delivering mechanism intermediate the pairs of type beds and web guides whereby webs may be directed between the beds and cylinders to be printed thereby.
5. In a printing press, the combination of two perfecting mechanisms, each comprising two stationary type beds arranged parallel one above the other, an impression cylinder co-acting with each type bed, means for reciprocating the cylinders over the beds, guides for directing a web of paper between the beds and cylinders, web feeding and de livering mechanism for each pair of beds and cylinders, one set of such mechanism being arranged at the end of the press and the other being arranged intermediate the pairs of beds, a looping mechanism adjacent each feed and delivery mechanism, a cam and connections for operating one looping mechanism, and means for operating the second looping mechanism from the first; a folder at the end of the press, and guides for directing webs of paper from the delivery mechanisms to the folder.
6. In a printing press, the combination of the side frames, a pair of beds therein arranged end to end in substantially the same plane, a second pair of beds arranged par allel with and above the first beds, an impression cylinder co-acting with each bed, a web feeding mechanism at one end of the press, a second web feeding mechanism intermediate the pairs of beds, gearing between the said feeding mechanisms whereby they are driven in unison, a web looping mechanism for each feeding mechanism, a cam for operating all the looping mechanisms in unison, web delivering mechanism adjacent each looping mechanism, means for operating the web delivery mechanisms in unison, guides for directing webs through the press, a folder, and means for directing webs from the delivery mechanisms to the folder.
7. In a flatbed-printing press, the combination of two adjacent type beds arranged in substantially the same plane, two additional type beds above and parallel with the first type beds, an impression cylinder coacting with each type bed, means for reciprocating said cylinders, a web feeding,looping and delivering mechanism at the outer end of the first pair of type beds, a similar set of web feeding, looping and delivering mechanism intermediate the pairs of type beds, and connections whereby said web feeding, looping and delivering mechanisms are operated in unison means for throwing one set of web feeding, looping and delivering mechanism out of operation, and web guides whereby webs may be directed between the beds and cylinders to be printed thereby.
8. In a printing press, the combination of two perfecting mechanisms, each comprising two stationary type beds arranged parallel, one over the other, an impression cylinder co-acting with each type bed, means for reciprocating the cylinders over the bed, guides for directing a web or webs of paper between the beds and cylinders, web feeding and delivering mechanism for each pair of beds and cylinders, one set of said mechanism being arranged at the end of the press and the other being arranged intermediate the pairs of beds, a looping mechanism adjacent each feed and delivery mechanism, a cam and connections for operating one looping mechanism, and connections for operating the second looping mechanism from the firs I 9. In a printing press, the combination of two perfecting mechanisms, each comprising two stationary type beds arranged parallel one over the other, an impression cylinder co-acting with each bed, means for reciprocating the cylinders over the beds, guides for directing a web or webs of paper between the beds and cylinders, web feeding and delivering mechanism for each pair of beds and cylinders, one set of such mechanism being arranged at the end of the press and the other set being arranged intermediate the pairs of beds, a looping mechanism adjacent each feed and delivery mechanism, a cam and connections for operating one looping mechanism, and connections for operating the second looping mechanism from the first; a folder at the end of the press, guides for directing a web or webs of paper from the delivery mechanisms to the folder, and means whereby one set of cylinders and its relative feeding, looping and delivering mechanisms may be put out of operation.
