Application filed April 6,1907. Serial No. 366,774.
To all Livhom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stanley, in the county of Pemiscot and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Churn, of which the following is a specification'.
This invention relates to churns and has for itsobj ect to provide a comparatively simple and inexpensive device of this character by means of which the operation of churning may be accomplished with greater facility and less labor than heretofore.
A further object of the invention is to provide a supporting frame having a slide mounted for vertical movement thereon and provided with alined recesses for the reception o the adjacent end of the dasher rod, said slide being operatively connected with and driven by suitable gearing so that by rotating the operating handle a reciprocating movement may be imparted to ythe dasher.
Afurther object is to`provide improved means for securing the crank Wheel or disk in position on the driving shaft, and means for preventing accidental displacement of thedasher rod. I
A still further object of the invention is to generally improvethis class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency.
, Further objects and advantagesvwill appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to Within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a front elevation partly in section of a churn operating mechanism constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2. is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3vof Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of the dasher rod and the adjacent edge of the sliding frame. i
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The improved churn forming the subject matter of the present invention consists of a supporting frame. including spaced uprights or standards 5 connected at their upper ends by a cross bar 6 which constitutes the top of the frame, as shown.
Secured to the inner faces of the uprights 5 are vertical guides 7 between which is mounted for reciprocation a vertically movable slide or dasher supporting frame indicated as a whole at 8.
The slide or frame 8 consists of transverse bars 9 and 410 connected by vertical bars 11 preferably spaced inwardly from the adjacent ends of the transverse bars 9 and 10 so as to accommodate the vertical guides 7, said transverse bars being provided with vertical alined recesses 12 for the reception oi the guides 7, as shown.
Spaced laterally from the rear wall 13 of the supporting frame is an auxiliary Wall 14 deiining an intermediate chamber 15 and journaled in suitable openings in the walls 14 and 15 is a driving shaft 16 provided with a pinion 17 which meshes with a master gear 18 carricd by the stub shaft 19 also journaled in the Walls 13 and 14.
The driving shaft 16 projects laterally beyond the auxiliary Wall 14 and is provided with a squared terminal 20 adapted to receive a crank wheel or disk 21, the latter being pivotally connected through the Inedium of a pitman 22 with the lower transverse bar or cross head 10 of the slide 8. As a means for locking the disk in position on the squared'terminal oi the operating shaft 1'6 there is provided a Washer 23 having its central portion seated in correspondingly shaped recesses 24 formed in the face of the crank disk or Wheel 21 and provided With a laterally extending arm er spur 25 which is driven or otherwise embedded in the face of the disk, as shown. The disk is further locked against accidental displacement on the operating shaft 16 by means of a locking pin 26 which extends through an opening in the squared terminal of the shaft 16 and bears against the adjacent face of the Washer 23.
ne end of the locking pin 26 is embedded in the adjacent Wall of the recess 24 While its opposite end extends through the disk and terminates iush with the periphery of the disk, as shown, there being a recess or depression 27 ormed in the periphery of said disk so that the end of the rod or pin 26 may be conveniently grasped with the fingers when it is desired to release the pin preparatory to lremoving the crank wheel or disk for any purpose.
The upper transverse bar 9 of the slide or frame is provided with an opening 29 adapted to receive the reduced end ofthe dasher rod 30, said rod being provided With transverse notches or recesses 31 adapted to engage the adjacent walls of an opening formed in the front longitudinal edge of the transverse bar orcross head 10 thereby to support the rodin alinement with the churn body.
The dasher proper may be of any approved form or construction and in the present instance is shown consisting oi a`plurality of radiating arms 34 having their terminals inclined or beveled and operating Within a churn body 35 of any approved construction.
The slide or frame 8 is preferably reinforced and asy strengthened by the provision of a beek pla-te 36 having its upper edge recessed at 37 to conform to the contour 0i the periphery oi the disk 2l so that the slide is free to reciprotztte upon the supporting frame Without coming in Contact with the crank disk.
The churn may be operated by power, hand or in any other suitable manner but it is preferred to provide a. hand crank 38 which in the present instance is secured to the end of the stub shaft at 9 so that by rotating the crank 38 movement Willbe imparted to the gearing and through the medium of the crank Wheel or disk an d slide rame impart zt reciprocating movement to the dasher.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that there is provided an extremely simple7 inexpensive and eilieient device admirably adapted for the attainment oi the ends in view.
