, UNITED STATES PATENT I OFFICE.
GEORGE FLOOD, OF CLAY BANK, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN F. KELLEY, OF SAME PLACE.
CHURN-MOTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,148, dated August 2, 1881. Application filed May 18,1881. (ModeL) .To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, GEORGE W. FLOOD, of Clay Bank, in the county of. ()ceana and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churn-Motors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
. clear, and exact description of the invention,
vices for operating that class of churns havingvertical reciprocating dashers 5 and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents a rectangular base-frame having suitably-braced uprights B B connected by a top piece, C, and by suitable transverse braces, D E. The ends of the two latter are connected by the vertical guides F F, forming .bearings for the U-shaped shoes G, which are pivoted upon spindles H extending. from the sides of the head I, to which .the dasher-stem is connected, as will be hereinafter described.
The inner sides of the side pieces, J J, of
base-frame A are provided with longitudinal grooves K K, to accommodate a sliding floor or platform, L, upon which the churn-body M is supported, said platform being preferably provided with a recess, N, to receive and hold the churn-body. The latter consists preferably of an ordinary earthen crock or vessel, which is cleaner and, in many other respects, better than a wooden churn. To hold the said churn-body securely in place duringoperation I employ a pair of loose adjustable bevel-faced clamps or sliding plates, P P, having notches O, by which they may be adjusted upon the uprights B B, between these and the churn-body, after the latter has been placed in position.
The churn-body is provided with a centrallyperforated cover, Q, for the stem R of the dasher, which may be of any suitable construction or configuration. A bearing is provided for the said dasher-stem,between the transverse brace E and a plate, S, secured upon the face of the latter by means of brackets T and pins or keys U. The head I is provided with a vertical perforation to receive the upper end of the dasher-stem, which is secured by a transverse pin or key V.
The spindles H of the head I are connected by a forked pitman, W, with a crank, X, formed.
upon a shaft, Y, mounted in the upper ends of '65 the uprights B B. Said shaft carries a flywheel, Z, and a pinion, A, engaging a gearwheel, B, upon a shaft, 0, mounted in suitable boxes upon the face of one of the uprights churn-body, may be readily slid out of the way of the operating mechanism, and by reversing this operation it may in a moments time be adjusted ready for churning. The entire device is simple, convenient, and easily operated.
Having thus described myinvention, lclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- Ina churn-motor, the combination, with suitable uprights, of a pair of adjustable clamps and a sliding recessed floor, all combined to operate so as to hold the churn-body detachably, as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the-foregoing as my own 1 have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses,
GEORGE W. FLOOD.
Witnesses: D. E. MQCLURE, EZEKIEL J. SHIRTS.
