Letters Patent No. 86,716, 'dated February 9, 1869.
INIPROVEMENT .IN STAIR-ROD.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettere Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it ma/y concern:
Be it known that I, H. UHRY, of the city of New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Stair- Rods; and I do hereby declare that the-following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to the class of stair-rods which are made of wood; and
The improvement consists in a new fastening, which may be reversed at pleasure on the rod, so as to allow of the rod being turned, whereby a neat and substantial reversible stair-rod is obtained.
In my drawings- Figure 1 lrepresents the broken end of one of my improved stair-rods, as it appears when in place;
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the same through the line K K'; v
Figure 3 is a sectional view of the same through the line X X; and
Figure 4 is a same view as fig. 3, only, in this last figure, the rotating fastening-capsule is turned.
My improved stairrod A may be made of any size and shape, provided it presents at the two points where the fastening is to be attached, i. c., near its two ends, alat surface, both at the back and the front of the rod.
On that flat surface a cylindrical hole is bored entirely through the thickness of the rod. That hole I have marked B. Y
F is a small capsule, or cylindricalicup, of the proper dimension to fit snugly in the hole B, and move freely therein in a direction around its own axis.
The bottom of the capsule F` projects in aflange, a, which prevents said capsule from passing entirely through the hole, and in the centre of that bottom there is an oblong hole, P,cut, to allow of a screw-eye passing freely through.
D is a lid to the capsule F. This lid is screwed to the capsule F by having a thread cut on the inside part ofthe capsule F.
The outs-ide of the lid D is turned of an ornamental shape, and has a centre-pointed projection, or point, d,
which maybe used as a guide, or gauge, to mark, onthe riser of the-stair-case, the precise spot where the screweyes are to be put on.
The lid D has projecting edges, so that when it is screwed to the capsule F, it eectually prevents it from getting away from the rod A, although it allows it to turn in the holes as already stated.
R 'represents-the riser of a stair-case, and
Tis the screw-eye, which is screwed therein, and serves as a catch to hold the stair-rod fast in place.
In g. 3, the rod is represented with its capsule F turned, so as to allow of the screw-eye Ts head entering in the capsule F, through the hole P. It is thus that it is when you put it on or when you wish to take it off.
circle, or turn, and ysuch as it is to be for holding the rod in place. The capsule F is turned by the projecting edge of the lid D.'
I will explain what I understand by my improved rod being reversible.
1Ilihen one side of the rod is tarnished or abused by the feet, or when, by the strain on the rod, the same happ'ensto be bent outward, as my rods are to be iinished` alike on both sides, it is desirable to turn them, or reverse them. For that purpose, the rod isv removed from the stairs, the lids D are unscrewed from the capsules F, the capsules F are extracted from the holes B, and inserted back therein, but from the opposite side or face of the rod, the lidsD are screwed in place, and the Vrod is now ready to be used as before, only, the part that was the back is now the front.

2..Making the stair-rod reversible, by having the holes B B made cylindrical, and the slotted holder F F removable at pleasure, for the purpose specified.

Inviig. 4, the capsule F is turned one-quarter of a` 1. The combination of the rod A with the slotted
