To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that we, THOMAS I. HOwE, MARTIN DEEG, and FRANK LA BARE, all of Owatonna, Steele county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Churn and Butter-Worker, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of combined churns and butter-workers, which include a revoluble drum with rotating butter-working rolls therein, said rolls being adapted to whirl with the drum during the churning operation and to remain in a fixed position within the churn drum while rotating on their own axes during the rotation of the drum in the butter-working operation; and our present invention relatesr particularly to improvements in the combined churn and butter-worker shown, described and claimed in Letters Patent issued to the above named Thomas I. IIowe May 27, 1902, No. 700775.
The objects of this invention are to provide improved means for rotating the butter-working rolls in the operation of working the butter and to provide means whereby the butter-Working rolls are retained at all times parallel to the drum.
Our invention consists generally in the constructions and combinations, hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification; Figure 1 is a longitudinal, vertical section, partly broken away, of a combined churn and butter-worker embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section ofthe same on line 2-2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same on line 3 3 of Fig. l looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 4 is a plan view with the central portion of the drum or drum body broken away. Fig. 5 is a detailed section of a portion of the driving gearing. Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view of the drum gudgeon and one of the roll gudgeons arranged therein. Fig. 7 is a detail of a portion of the drum. Fig. 8 is a detailed section on line S-8 of Fig.` 6. Figs. 9 and l0 are details of the ball lever clutch operating device.
The frame of the machine consists preferably of the legs or standards 2, 2 and 2, preferably connected by the longitudinal bars or rails 3. In the standards 2 a drum 4 is mounted; This drum may be of any suitable size and it is revolubly mounted on the standards 2 by means of the hollow flanged gudgeons 5. These gudgeons are secured to the heads of the drum; are mounted in boxes formed at the tops of said standards; and are preferably held in position by means of suitable caps 6. This drum is provided, upon its inner surface, with a series of flights or shelves 7 which, in churning, assist in agitating the cream and which, during the b utter-working operation, carry up the butter and deliver it to the butter-working rolls. Arranged within the drum, at each end thereof inside of the druml head, is a cross-head 8 provided with a gudgeon or shaft 9 that projects into, and is supported within, the hollow gudgeon 5 the drum. The gudgeen is provided with an arm 13 having bosses 14, said arm and bosses being set into the rear of the cross-head and forming the bearings for the roll shafts. We prefer to provide a suitable packing 10 between the gudgeon 9 and the hollow gudgeon 5, and also to provide a packing ring ll surrounding the gudgeon 9, so that a packed, tight joint may be formed at each end of the drum. The butter-working rolls l2,are arranged in a slightly diagonal position within thev drum, and are supported in said cross-heads 8. The shafts 1G extend through the gudgeons 9 (the openings through said gudgeons being at a slight inclination to the axis of the gudgeon), and each of said shafts 1G is provided, outside of the gudgeon 9, with a beveled gear 17, which meshes with a corresponding gear 18 upon a short shaft 19. Each of the shafts 19 is mounted in a box 20 suitably supported upon and preferably formed as a part of the standard 2.
Arranged within each of the hollow gudgeons 5 is a sleeve 21 which is secured to the end of the cross-head gudgeon 9 by a screw 9 or other suitable means. Each of these sleeves carries at its outer end, outside of the end of the hollow gudgeon 5, a beveled ring gear 22. As the sleeves 21 are secured rigidly to the cross-head 'gudgeons 9, it follows that thel gears 22, the sleeves 2l and the crosshead gudgeons 9 rotate together.
Mounted in bearings on the standards 2, at each end of the machine, is a shaft 24 carrying, at its upper end, a beveled pinion 25 that meshes with the beveled ring gear 22 on the sleeve 21. Shafts24 are also providedv at their lower ends with the beveled pinions 26, each of which meshes with a beveled pinion 27 on a shaft 2S mounted in boxes on one of the bars 3. By this means the cross-heads at the opposite ends ofthe drum are always maintained parallel to each other and the rolls mounted in said cross-heads are also maintained parallel to each other, whether said cross-heads are held in a stationary position, as they are during the butter-working operation, or are rotating with the drum, as they do in the churning operation.
' We also provide means in connection with the mechanism described for maintaining the parallelism of the cross-heads for locking said cross-heads in a stationary, horizontal position during the butter-working operation and for causing said cross-heads and rolls to whirl with the drum during the churning operation. This mechanism we will now proceed to describe: The box '20 at the driving end of the machine is provided with an inwardly projecting boss 30, preferably of circular form, and mounted thereon, and capable of sliding longitudinally, is the clutch sleeve 3l. This sleeve s provided with a series of fingers (see Fig 6) which project through openings in the gear 22 and are adapted to engage sockets 33 in the outer end of the hollow gudgeon 5. The clutch sleeve 30 is provided, upon its outer surface, with an annular groove 34 and a yoke 35, pivoted in the standards 36 secured to the box 20, is provided with studs 37 that engage said annular groove A handle 38 is connected to the axis of the yoke 35 and a latch 39, pivoted upon said handle, is adapted to engage a slotted quadrant 40 fixed upon one of the standards 36. By sliding the clutch sleeve 3l inward, the lingers 32 are brought into engagement with the sockets 33 in the end of the hollow gudgeon 5, and thereby the clutch sleeve 31, the sleeve 2l, the gudgeon 9 and the cross-head 8, at this end of the churn are locked to the churn gudgeon, so that they must rotate therewith, and, through the mechanism already described, the corresponding' parts at the opposite end of the churn are compelled to move simultaneously therewith. By this means when the clutch is thrown inward the gea-r 22, and the parts connected therewith,
churning operation the cross-heads 8 will rotate with the drum andthe rolls will whirl around with the drum without, however, rotating on their own axes. These rolls will, during the churning operation, act as dashers and assist in the agitation of the cream.
For locking the cross-heads in a stationary position, we prefer to provide a projection 41 on the yoke 35 and to form in the gear 22 a slot 42 (see Figs. 6 and 8), whereby when said yoke is thrown into the position shown in Fig. 6 the clutch sleeve 30 is moved out of engagement with the end of the drum gudgeon and the projection 4]A is moved into engagement with the slot 42 in the gear 22. This will lock the ci'oss-head at that end of the machine in a horizontal position and through the connecting mechanism described the cross-head at the opposite end of the machine will also be held in a similar position. v
Instead of locking the gear by the engagement of the projection 41 With the slot 42, We may, if preferred, provide fingers 43 ou the outer end of the clutch sleeve 3l and cause said fingers to engage slots 44 in the inwardly projecting boss 30 when the clutch sleeve is moved to the outer limit of its` movement. The same result will be accomplished in this way as is accomplished by the engagement of the lug, 41 on the yoke 35 with the slot in the gear 22. Both of these devices may, if preferred, be employed, but only one of them is required.
For the purpose of driving the rolls we provide each of the shafts 19 with a beveled gear 45 and we connect these gears by means of the inclined shafts 46 having the beveled pinions 47 in engagement with the gears 45 and having, at their lower ends, the beveled pinions 48 in engagement with similar pinions 49 on the shaft 50, preferably supported in bearings on the frame of the machine, and we provide means by which these shafts may be driven at the required speed when it is desired to rotate the butter-working rolls for the working operation. v
We may provide any suitable mechanism for rotating the drum and also for driving the shafts that are connected to the roll gears. We have here shown and prefer toemploy a driving shaft 51 mounted at its outer end in the bearing in the standard 2 and supported near its inner end on a bridge-tree 52 that is secured to the standards 2 at the driving end of the machine. Loosely mounted upon this shaft is a driving pulley 53 and also loosely mounted upon this shaft is a sleeve 54 carrying the clutch member 55. -The pulley 53 may be moved into engagement with such clutch member when the clutch sleeve will be driven with the pulley, or said pulley may be allowed to rotate freely on the shaft when the churn will stand idle. The sleeve 54 v has a bearing in the bridge-tree 52 (see Fig, 5) and this sleeve is provided with a pinion 56. The shaft 51 has secured to its inner end a pinion 58 that engages a ring gear 59 on the end of the drum. A counter-shaft 6() is mounted on the bridge-tree 52 parallel with the shaft 5l and a sleeve 6l is mounted so as to turn loosely upon said shaft and this shaft is provided with a gear 62 that engages the pinion 56 on the sleeve 54 with a pinion 63 that is adapted to engage a gear 65 splined upon the shaft 51 and capable of sliding thereon. A beveled pinion 66 is secured upon the shaft 60 and engages a are all locked to the churn gudgeon, and dui'ing the beveled gear 67 on the roll driving shaft 46. A lever 68 is provided for sliding the sleeve 61 on the shaft 60 and a lever 69 is provided for sliding the gear 65 on the shaft 5l. Clutch members 71 and 72 are provided respectively on the end of the sleeve 54 and on the hub I of the pulley 65 and similar clutch members 73 and 74 are provided respectively on the hub of the pinion 66 and the end of the sleeve 61.
When it is desired to operate the churn, the pulley 53 is moved into engagement with the clutch 55. This rotates the sleeve 54 and Aalso the sleeve 61. At all timos, except for the butter-working operation, the sleeve 6l will be out of engagement with the hub of the pinion 66. 1f it is desired to rotate the churn drum at a fast speed for the churning operation, the gear G5 is shifted so that its clutch member is in engagement with the clutch member on the end of the sleeve 54, thereby the shaft 51 and pinion 58 will be driven at the desired speed for rotating the churn body in the churning operation.
When it is desired to rotate the churn body for the working operation, the gear 65 is moved into position to be engaged by the pinion 63 and the shaft 5l and pinion 58 will now be driven at a slow speed and impart the desired slow motion to the churn drum. At this time if the rolls are to be operated for working the butter, the cross-heads will be locked in a horizontal position by the means already described and the sleeve 61 will be moved into engagement with the pinion 66 and thereby said pinion will be driven'and through it the rolls will be turned upon their axes for the butter-working operation.
1t may be desirable some times to rotate the i'olls upon their axes while the churn body or drum remains stationary. This can be accomplished by shifting the gear 65 into an intermediate position, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 5, so that it will not be engaged either by the clutch on the sleeve 54 or by the pinion 63.
If preferred, we may employ for operating the sliding clutch 31 a pivoted arm 70 carrying a weight 71 and mounted on the pivot or axis 0f the yoke 35. In this instance the yoke is provided with the projecting arms 72 and when the weighted arm or ball lever 70 is thrown into the position shown in Fig. 9, it throws the clutch in one direction and when it is thrown over so as to engage With the other arm 72, it throws the clutch in the other direction and the weighted lever holds the clutch in engagement with either part.
We claim as our invention:
1. The combination, with a revoluble drum provided with hollow gudgeons, of crossheads arranged in said drum, each of said cross-heads bein; provided with a gudgeon mounted in the hollow gudgeon of the drum head, means arranged outside oi' said drum, connecting said cross-head gudgeons, whereby said cross-heads are always maintained parallel to each other, and means for locking one of said cross-head gudgeons either to the drum gudgeen or to the frame of the machine, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a revoluble drum provided with hollow gudgeons, of crossheads arranged in said drum, each of said cross-heads being, provided with a gudgeon mounted in the hollow gudgeon of the drum head, butter working rolls supported in said cross-heads, substantially parallel to each other, the axis of one roll being; substantially coincident with the axis of the drum at one end and the axis of the other roll being substantially coincident with the axis of the drum at the other end, means arranged outside of said drum connecting said cross-head gudgeons, and means for locking one of said cross-head gudgeons either to the drum gudgeon or to the frame of the machine.

The combination, with a revoluble drum, provided with hollow gudgeons, of cross-heads arranged in said drum, each of said cross-heads being provided with a gudgeon mounted in the hollow gudgeon of the drum head, butter working,l rolls mounted in said cross-heads, the axis oi one roll beingr substantially coincident with the axis of the drum at one end and the axis of the other roll being,r substantially coincident with the axis of the drum at the other end, and the journal of one roll projecting through one of the cross-head gudgeons and the journal of the other roll projecting through the other cross-gudgeon, means arranged outside of said drum connecting, said cross-head gudgeons, means for locking one of said eross head gudgeons to the drum gudgeon or to the frame of the machine, substantially as described,

The combination, with a revoluble drum, of crossheads arranged therein and provided with gudgeons projecting centrally through the heads of the drum, a pair of rolls mounted in said cross-heads, the journal of one roll projecting through one ot' the cross-heads and its gudgeon and the journal of the other roll projecting through the other cross-head and its gudgeon, means outside of said drum connecting said roll journals and causing the same to rotate simultaneously, means for locking said crossheads and gudgeons to the drum or to the frame of the machine, means for rotating said drum, and means for rotatingl said rolls.

The combination, with a revoluhle drum provided at its ends with hollow gudgeons, of cross-heads arranged in said drum, each of said cross-heads being provided with a gudgeon mounted in thelhollow gudgeon of the drum head, a gear supported upon the outer end of each of said cross- -head eudgeons, and suitable means arranged outside et said drum for connecting the gears on said gudgeons, substantially as described. y
6. The combination, with a revoluble drum provided with hollow gudgeons, of cross-heads arranged in said drum, each of said cross-heads being provided with a gudgeon mounted in the hollow gudgeon of the drum head, suitable gears supported upon said cross-head gudgeons, means outside of the drum connecting said gears, a clutch arranged to lock one ot' said cross-head gudgeons to its supporting drum gudgeons, and means for locking said cross-head gudgeon to the frame ot' the machine, substantially as described.
7. The combination, with a revoluble drum provided with hollow gudgeons, of cross-heads arranged in said drum, each of said cross-heads being provided with a gudgeon mounted in the hollow gudgeon of the drum, means arranged outside of said drum connecting said cross-head gudgeons and a clutch adapted to lock one ot' said cross-head gudgeons either to the drum gudgeon or to the frame of the machine.
