arranged within a revoluble drum and are held,during the butter-working operation,l in a stationary position whileeach of said rollsis rotated inwardly towards the other upon its own axis and the butter which is carried up by the wall of the drum and fiights thereon is dropped onto the rolls and is passed between them, this operation being repeated as often as necessary until the butter is completely worked.
The object of my present invention is to obviate the necessity of using a loose or independent head at one end of the churn that is clamped to the head of the drum during the churning operation and is released therefrom and held in a stationary position during the butter-working operation.
. Another object of the invention is to arrange the butter-working rolls Within the drum in position to more certainly receive the butter that is carried up by the Iiights so as to insure amore uniform working thereof.
Other objects of the invention will appear'from the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal, vertical section of a combined churn and butter-worker embodying my invention. Fig. 2 isa horizontal section of the same. Fig.l 3 is a plan view and partial section showing the driving mechanism. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the machine on line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a `vertical section on line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a vertical section on line 6-6 of Fig. 1. Figs. 7 and 8 are details of the crosshead lock. Fig. 9 is a longitudinal, vertical section .showing a slightly modified construction.

Said gudgoons are preferably formed integrally with the spiders' 8 and 9 which are bolted or otherwisesuitably secured to the heads of the drum.

, whichvare located parallel to eachother 4and supported at their rear ends by suitable gudgeons mounted in bearings in a cross-head 11. This cross-head is provided with a shaft 12 that extends through a stuffing box 13 in the head of the drum and through the hollow gudgeon 6 and has mounted, upon its outer end, the beveled gear 13".
The front or-gear end of the churn .drum is provided witha. central opening in which is tted a sectional friction head 14. lThis sectional head fits within the opening in the drum head and a cream and water tight joint is formed between the circumference of said sectional headand the wall /of the opening in the drum head. This joint may be vformed in any suitable manner. I prefer to provide the wall of the opening with a flanged ring 15 fitting therein and bol ted to said vdrum head and to provide a suitable packing between said ring and the circumferential wall of the sectional head 14. A ring 16 is arranged to project into the space between the ring 15 and the circumferential wall of the sectional head and suitable bolts 17 are provided, by means of which said ring 16 may be Aforced into the space between the ring 15 and the circumferential wall ofthe sectional head forthe purpose of extending v the packing andtight'ening the joint. At this end of` lthe gudgeons 19 has secured to it a gear 22 and these gears mesh with each other, and formed integrally with one of said gears is a pinion or smaller gear 23 (see Fig. 2). A shaft 24 extends through the tubular shaft 21 andhas its inner end projecting into a socket 25 formed in a boss on the outersurface of the sectionalhead 14. The shaft 24 has secured to it the pinion26 which meshes with the pinion 23 on the gudgeon of one of the rolls and at its outer end ithas secured to. it the pinion 27, which is engaged by a gear 28 mounted on a stud or short shaft that is supported on the standard 2.
I prefer to form the sectional head 14 of metal and to secure a wooden plate 29 to its inner surface. This plate prevents the cream and butter from coming in Contact with the metal head 14. I also prefer to pro- Avide a cross-head 30 that is secured to the inner side of the sectional head and supports one end of each of the roller shelves 31-31, the opposite ends ofsaid shelves being supported in the cross-head 11 (see Fig. 5). These rollcr'shelves are arranged at each side of, and a little above, the butter-working rolls and form a sort of hopper and assist in guiding the butter dropped from the flights or'shelves to the rolls.
1 provide means for rotating the drum at a high speed for churning and at a low'speed for working the butter and I also provide means for rotating the rolls upon their axes during the butter-working operation and, if preferred, the rolls may be rotated upon their axes while the drum is stationary. I also provide means for locking the cross-head in a stationary position so as to hold the rolls from whirling with 'the drum during the y butter-working operation.
For the purpose of revolving the drum, I provide a v horizontal frame or bridge-tree 32 secured upon the stan ard 2 at the gear end of the machine and in suit- .able boxes upon this bridge-tree and in the standard 2 I mount the driving-shaft 33 carrying, at its inner end, a pinion 34 that engages with a ring gear 35 on the head of the drum. Mounted so as to rotate freely upon this shaft is the driving pulley 36 and a clutch member 37 isprovided upon a sleeve38 that is also loosely mounted upon the shaft 33. This sleeve is preferably arranged within one of the shaft supporting boxes. The driving pulley can be moved longitudinally upon the shaft 33 so as to have its rim engage or disengage the clutch member 37. The sleeve 38 is also provided with a pinion 39 and the inner end of the sleeve is provided with the projections 42 forming one member of a clutch.I
Mounted in bearings in the bridge-tree," parallel with the shaft 33, is a short shaft 43 havingarranged thereon the sleeve 44 carrying, at one en'd, a pinion 45 and at the other end a gear 46 that meshes with the pinion 39 on the sleeve 38. Secured on the shaft'43, so as to rotate therewith, is a pinion 47 and a clutch member 48 is arranged upon the hub of this pinion and a corresponding clutch member 49 is arranged upon the end of the sleeve 44. The 'sleeve 44 is capable of being shifted slightly longitudinally on the shaft 43 so as to engage or disengage the clutch members 48 and 49. Splined upon the shaft 33 is a gear 50 having its hub provided with a clutch member 51 adapted to be engaged with the clutch member 42 on the sleeve 38. The gear 50 is adapted to slide lengthwise on the shaft 33 and may be brought into meshwith the pinion 45 on the'sleeve 44 or it may be moved out of mesh with said pinion and may stand in an intermediate position, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, or this gear may be shifted on the shaft 33 so as to bring the clutch member 51 into engagement with the clutch member 42.4
VWhen it is desiredA to rotate the drum at a high speed for the churning operation, the gear 50 is shifted so as to bring the clutch member 51 into engagement With the clutch member '42 and the driving pulley 36 being thrown into engagement with the clutch 37, thef drum will be revolved at the' desired speed for the churning operation. v 1
For the butter-working operation the gear 50 is moved into mesh with the pinion 45 and then the drum is revolved yat a slow speed .through the pinion 39, the gear 46, the pinion 45, the gear 50 and pinion 34. u At the same time in order to drive the butter-working rolls, the sleeve 44 is shifted so as to engage the cluteh mem- Whirls with the drum, the other must have a similar and this, in turn, drives the gear 28, with which it is in mesh. i This drives the pinion 27, the shaft 24, the pinion 26, the pinion 23 and the roll gears 22, rotating the rolls on their axes for the operation of working the butter.
If it lis desired to rotate the rolls while the drum remains stationary, the gearV 50 is shifted far enough to disengage it from the pinionv45 without engaging the clutch members 42 and 51. The drum will then remain stationary while the rolls will be rotated on their axes, turning inwards toward each other. Suitable levers 52 and 53 are provided for shifting the gear 50 and the sleeve 44.
Mounted on and'secured to the tubular cross-head shaft 21 at the front or gear end of the machine is a beveled gear 21 corresponding to the gear 13 on the cross-head shaft 12 at the opposite end of the machine. These gears are connected by means of the beveled pinion 54, shaft 55, pinions 56 and 57, horizontal shaft 58, pinions 59 and 60, shaft 61 and pinion 62. By this means said cross-heads are always held parallel to each other, and the butter-working rolls are also held parj allel to each other, and when one of said cross-heads movement. i ,i I provide means for loclging one of the cross-head shafts to the drum gudgeon at one end of the machine` so as to cause the cross-heads and the rolls to whirl with the drum during the churning operation, or for locking said cross-head shaft to the frame of the machine, whereby said cross-heads and rolls will be held in a stationary position during the butter working operation. For this purpose, I provide, in the outer end of the hollow gudgeon 7, a series of recesses or slots and I provide a clutch sleeve 63 having corresponding fingers adapted to engage said recesses and thereby to lock said cross-head shaft to the drum gudgeon. These fingers pass through slots 64 in the gear 21 (see Fig. 7) and for the purpose of moving said clutch sleeve, I provide a yoke 65 pivoted on the frame of the machine and provided with arms 66 engaging said clutch sleeve'and with an operating handle 67 provided with a latch 68 adapted to engage recesses in a stationary rack 69 (see Fig. 8). When the yoke is thrown into the perpen- 110 dicular vposition shown in Fig. 1, the ngers on the clutch sleeve are moved inward through the slots in the gear 21 and into engagement with the recesses in the outer end of the drum gudgeon 7. The yoke 65 is j preferably provided with a lug or projection 70 adapted 1 15 to engagea-recess 7l in the gear 21 and when the yoke is swung into the position shown in Fig. 8, the clutch sleeve is Withdrawn from engagement with the drum gudgeon and the projection 70 engaging the slot 71 and the gear 21 locks both of the cross-head shafts and the 120 cross-heads and rolls supported by them in a stationary position. For the purpose of holding these rolls in'a horizontal position during the butter-working operation, the slot 71 is provided in the part of the gear 21 which is at the top when the rolls are in a horizontal 125 po's'ition. i
' In some instances it will be desired to hold the rolls in a stationary position during the churning operation and it will be noted that with this' construction the rolls, when held 4in a horizontal position, are below the v130 25 cured to the standard 2.
from one side oi the drum to the other and against the rolls and roller shelves to cause the proper churning ,of the cream into butter.` I may also, ii preferred, lock the cross-heads and rolls in such position that the rolls stand in a vertical plane, one over the other, or in any other plane. This arrangement' may be found particularly advantageous when it is desired to churn without causing the cross-heads and rolls to whirl with the drum. I lock the cross-heads and rolls in this position by providing another slot 7I in the gear 2l at a l point one-fourth oi the circumference removed from the slot now shown in said gear. In some'instances I prefer to employ, at the iront or gear end of the drum,k in place oi the spider 9 having the hollow gudgeon 7 a' ring gudgeon 75 supportedupon a ring bearing-76 se- In this instance I prefer to arrange the locking yoke 65 and clutch sleeve 63 at the opposite or rear end oi the machine (see Fig. 9), the other parts of the structure remaining, however, substantially as already shown and described.
I do notlimit myselito any particular construction for the sectional head arranged in the central opening in the main drum made with a tight joint between its circumferential wall and the wall of said opening as any form of sectional head fitting Within the opening in the main drum head and forming a tight joint therewith which, at the same'time, is 'capable o permitting said sectional head to remain stationary while the drum rotates, may be employed, nor do I limit myself io the use of a stung box in the joint between the sec- 40 tional head and the wall o f said central opening.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a combined churniand butter-worker, the combination, with a revoluble drum provided with a head having a central opening, of a sectional head arranged within said opening with a permanently cream-tight joint between saidfsectionalhead and the wall of said opening, and a pair of butter-workingrolls arranged within said drum, having their gudgeons projecting through 'said sectional head, substantially as described.`

3. In a combined churn ,and butter-worker, the combina- -itio'n with a revoluble drum provided with a head having a central opening, of a sectional head arranged within said opening with a permanently cream-tight joint between said sectional head and the wall of the opening, a pair of butter-working rolls arranged within said drum and having theirgudgeons projecting through said sectional head, and roll-drivingr gearing connected with said gudgeons outside of said sectional head, substantially as described.
4. In a combined churn and butter-worker, the combination, with a revoluble drum provided with 'a head having a central opening, of a sectional head arranged within said opening with a permanently cream-tight joint be tween saidsectional head and the wall of said opening, and a pair of butter-working rolls arranged within said drum below the center thereof and having their gudg'eons projecting through said ,sectional head, substantially as described.
5. `In a combined churn and butter-worker, the combination, with a revoluble drum, of a pair of butter-working rolls arrangedA in said drum, means supporting said rolls below the axis ot the drum and parallel to each other, means for holding the roll supports in'astationary position, and means for rotating the r'olls on their axes during the butter-working operation.
6. In a combined churn and butter-worker, the combination with a revoluble-drum, of a pairof butter-working rolls arranged in said drum, means supporti-ng said rolls below ,the axis of the drum and parallel 'to each other, means for locking'the roll-supports to the drum, whereby said rolls whirl with the drum during thechurning operation, or for holding said roll-supports in a stationary position `during the butter-working operation.`
7. In a`combined churn and butter-worker, the combination, with a revoluble drum, of a pair of butter-working rolls arranged in said drum, means supporting said rolls below the axis of thedrum and parallel .with each other, means for rotating the drum, and means for holding the roll-supports in a stationary position while said drum is being rotated. 4
8. In a combined churn and butter-worker, the combination, with a revoluble drum, of a pair of butter-working rolls arranged in said drum, means supporting said rolls parallel vwith each other, means for rotating the drum, and,means for/locking the roll supports in a stationary position, while the drum is rotating, with the `rolls in either a horizontal or `a vertical plane.
