GEORGE OARRINGTON AND HUGH PUSEY, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
ADVERTISING MEANS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 17, 1907.
Application filed July 1,1907. Serial No. 381,652.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE OARRINGTON and HUGH PUsEY, citizens oi the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of Oalifornia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Advertising Means, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to advertising and vending means. Its object is to provide a novel and attractive device for promoting the introduction and sale of various vendible articles such as cigars, candy, and other things.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the device. view of a ball.
A represents a rotatable member here shown in the form of a cylinder; but it is to be understood that it may Fig. 2 is a be of any other desired shape, as oblong, square, prismoidal or globular. It may be of any desired size, and may be made of any suitable material.
It is conveniently mounted for rotation in any appropriate manner and on any suitable form of support, as the portable stand 2.
The periphery of the cylinder is provided with a plurality of recesses or pockets 3, each adapted to contain something which will represent an order for a specified quantity of a particular class of goods, as for example, cigars. This order maybe a small ball as 4 fitting loose in a pocket 3 and suitably inscribed to represent the quantity of goods to be delivered to the holder on presentation. Manifestly this order medium may take a variety of forms, and we do not limit ourselves to a ball or to any particular form of order, or substance from which it may be made.
The surface of the cylinder A is covered by a sheet of paper 5, which acts as a closure and seal for the pockets and retains the order devices 4 in place until the paper over a pocket has been broken.
All the pockets are designed to receive each an order medium as 4 and none of these order media 4 are to be visible to the purchaser until he has broken the seal to one or more pockets.
The position of the several pockets beneath the paper is indicated in any appropriate manner as by the dots 6.
Any suitable means may be employed to remove an order 4 from its pockets, as for example the tweezers 7. While ordinarily the balls will roll out of their pockets by gravity when the seals are broken and the cylinder rotated to invert the opened pockets, still if a ball did stick in its pocket it can easily be dug out with the tweezers. If slips of paper are used as orders instead of balls 4, they can be pulled out by the tweezers.
By having the dots 6 of contrasting color with the body of the cover sheet 5, a bewildering and interesting effect is produced when the device A is rapidly rotated. In fact one of the great advantages of this device and one of its particular claims to novelty and utility as an advertising medium, resides in making the part A rotatable. A customer will always give the thing a turn or two before he breaks the seal of a pocket; the motion of the thing interests or amuses him and he wants to see what is on the back. This action of turning the part A attracts others who see the device who might not otherwise observe it, for it is well known that amoving object more quickly affects the sense of sight than a stationary object.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an advertising means, the combination of a mernber mounted for rotation and having pockets, an order device in each pocket, and a friable seal for the pockets.
2, In an advertising means, the combination of a member mounted for rotation and having pockets, a removable order device in each pocket, and a dotted sheet of paper on the periphery of said rotatable member forminga seal and closure for the several pockets.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE CARRINGTON. HUGH PUSEY.
