@time GEORGE SILL, OF WILKINS, A SSIGNOR TO I-IIMSELF AND H. vI-I.
- NEGLEY, OF ELTSBUR'G, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent N 86,598, dated Feb/farm; 2, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SWING-S.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sama.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE SILL, of Wilkins, in the county of Allegheny, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swings;4 and. do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descripticn thereof, reference being had rto the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construetion and general arrangement of a swing, which will be hereinafter fully set forth.
-ln order to enable others skilled in the art t0 which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its consti-notion and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this speeiiication, and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation;
Figure 2, a side elevation in section; and
Figure 3, a section ofthe treadle, showing the manner of adjusting the same.
A A represent the frame 3 B B, the swinging bars, near the lower ends of which the seat, G, is placed.
The seat G-'is constructed of two bent pieces, one, a., forming seat and back, and the other, l), forming sidesiand arms.
rIhe piece c is, at its front end, secured to a c ross-V bar, c, connecting the. two swinging bars, andthe ends ofthe piece b are mortised through the swinging bars, the centre ot' said piece passing around and supporting the back of the seat, thus giving to the seat great strength and rigidity.
To the lower ends of the swinging bars B B, the adjustable treadle D is pivotcd. y
The treadlc consists of two arms, d d, slotted at the rear ends, and connected, at the front ends, by means ofthe foot-board E. f
A rod, f, passes through the lower ends of the two swinging bars, and passes also through the slots on the arms d d, which are then secured by means of a notched metal plate, 71, pivoted, one to each arm, as shownin fig. 3.
By this means the foot-board E'can bc placed closer to or farther from the seat, thus allowing the swing to be accommmlated as well to grown-up per- -sons as to children.
At the front ends ofthe. arms d d are pivoted metal bars yi i, which have two or more holes, in which rods k le are passed.
These rods connect the treadle D with an arm, m., projecting from a segmental wheel, E, which is pivoted, in some suitable manner, to a cross-bar, a, connecting the two swinging bars a suitable distance from their upper ends.,- y
On the under side ofthe top cross-bar ofthe frame A, is placed a stationary segmental wheel, F, which acts in connection with the wheel E, as will be hereinafter set forth.
A chain or belt, O, is secured to the arm m, and passes along the front and upper `side of the wheel E, then along the rear side ot' the wheel F, and is secured to the top ofthe flame A.
The swing is operated by pressing'on the treadle4 with the foot, which, acting through the rods l: con the wheel E, causes the swing to move backward, and, by releasing the pressure on the treadle, the swing moves tbrward aga-in; and, by repeatedly pressing and release ing the treadle, the swing is operated with great/ease.
Instead of using the chain or belt O to connect the two wheels, E and F, they may be provided with cogs, gearing into each other, and said wheels may be either elliptical or circular segments, whichever may be deemed most adwmtageous for the easier operation of the swing. y
Having thus fully described my invent-ion,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The treadl'e D, constructed as described, of the slotted arms d l and foot-board e, and having on each arma notched-plate or bar, h, pivoted to the same, for the purpose of' adjusting the treadle, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The seat O, constructed, as described, oi' two bent pieces, one of which forms the sides and arms,` and is mort-ised into the swinging bars B B, substantially as and foijthe purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination ot the stationary segmental wheel F. and pivoted segmental wheel E, arranged and connected substantially asshown and described.
4. Connecting the treadle D to the wheel E by means of the rods 7; 7.'. and .pivoted bars yi i, substantially as shown and described.
5. The combination ofthe swinging bars B B, seat C, adjustable treadle l), wheels E and F, and connecting-rods lair, all constructed as described, and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set i'orth. 1
In testimony that I claim the tbregoing, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this 19th day of Deceniber, 1868.
