Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE KUHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meadville, county of Crawford, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swin s, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to swings, and its primary object is, to provide a swing with means whereby the occupant may propel the swm A further object of the invention is, to provide a novel construction of swing adapted to be either suspended from a porch ceiling or like sup ort, or by means of standards anchored in t e ground, and suitably braced.

The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and its features of novelty will be set forth in the appended claims. 1

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the

1 and 2 designate. parallel posts or standards, adapted to be anchored in the ground, and braced by inclined braces 3.

To the inner side of each of the standards is secured a bracket 4 provided with an inwardly projecting threaded pin 5 serving as the pivotal supports for the adjustable side bars 6 of the swing. These side bars are each formed with a series of openings 7 to receive the pivot pins 5, and are secured by nuts 8 fitting the threadedends of the pins. By providing a plurality of openings 7 in the side bars, the latter may be adjusted to a long or short position.

1 and 2 is a yoke or frame comprising parallel arm's 9 connected by an integral cross bar 10, the endsof the arms 9 being supported in sockets 11 secured to the

The swing seat consists of parallel bottom bars 12 pivotally secured at the oint 13 to the side bars, and connected by s ats 14, and back bars 15 pivotally secured to the bottom bars as at 16, and also connected by slats 17. The back bars 15 are loosely connected to the side bars by rods 18 pivotally connectad at their ends to said back barsand side are.

1 and 2 is a lever 19, said lever being connected by rods 20 to parallel foot-rest bars 21, pivotally connected to the lower ends of the side bars. The ends of the rods 20 are pivotally secured to the levers 19 and tothe foot rest bars 21, and said bars 21 are connected by slats 22 and a cross-rod 23. Y

24 and 25 designate ropes or cables secured at their upper ends to the cross-bar 10, and passing over pulleys 26 mounted upon the projecting ends of a rod 27 extending through openings in the upper ends of the cross bar 6. ends of the ropes are attached to the levers 19.

The operation of the improved swing will be readily understood. The pressure of the feet of the occupant upon the foot-rest operates the levers 19 causing a tension upon the

ropes

24 and 25, thus rendering the swing self-propelling, the pivoted connections of the bottom-bars, foot-bars and foot-rest bars affording the required leverage to permit the occupant of the swing to keep it in motion, and regulate its swinging movement.

In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the

standards

1 and 2 are dispensed with, and in lieu thereof I employ depending bars or hangers 28, secured to a porch ceiling 29, or like support. The bars or hangers 28 are preferably provided with braces 30 connected at their upper ends to the outer sides of the bars. The other elements of the structure are similar to those already described, and bear the same reference numerals. 1

I would have it understood that the invention includes all such modifications and variations in the details of construction, as may be resorted to Without departing from the terms and scope of the claims.

Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is

1. A swing comprising vertical sup orts, brackets secured thereto, and provided with pivot pins, side bars mounted upon said pins, a frame or yoke projecting from said supports, a seat secured between said sidebars, levers, pivotally secured to said sidebars on opposite sides of said seat, ropes secured at one end to said frame or yoke and at their 0 posite ends to said levers, pulleys on said si e-bars for said ropes, foot-rest bars pivotally secured to said side bars, and con- The lower nections between said foot-rest bars and levers. 2. A swing comprising vertical supports,

braces for said supports, brackets secured to i said supports and provided with threaded ins, side bars mounted on ,said pins, nuts for securing said side bars upon said pins, a rod connecting the upper ends of said sidebars, pulleys mounted upon the projecting ends of said rod, a seat secured between said side-bars, levers pivotally secured to the side bars, a frame or yoke secured to said supports, ropes secured at one end to said frame or yoke and at the opposite ends to said levers, and passing over said pulleys, footrest bars pivotally secured to said side bars, and rods connecting said foot-rest bars and levers.

3. A swing com rising vertical supports, brackets secured t ereto and provided with threaded pins, side bars mounted upon said pins, nuts for securing said side bars in position, a rod connecting the upper ends of said side-bars, pulleys mounted on said rod, a seat secured between the side bars, and comprising bottom-bars pivotally secured to the side-bars, back-bars pivotally secured to the seat-bars, and foot-rest bars pivotally secured to the side-bars, connections between said back-bars and side-bars, levers pivoted to said side bars, connections between said levers and foot-rest bars, a frame secured to said su ports, ropes connected at one end to said rame, and at their opposite ends to said levers, and passing over said pulleys.
