UNDERFRAME FOR CARS.
invention as embodied in anunderirame of the general construction disclosed in my application Serial No. 377,721 filed .l une 7, 1907, to illustrate one embodiment of the invention, and referring thereto Figure 1 is a top plan view of the underframe. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 3 is an'enlarged' longitudinal sectional view o'n the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. v Fig. 4 is an enlarged transversesectional view on the lines 4-4 oi Fig. l. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail View showing one of the joints.
Referring to the drawingseach side sill consists of two end sections Tand a central section 8, all of these scctions'being preferably made of cast steel in channel Yorin, butv the central section 8 may be made-of a rolled channel b'earn. The ends ofthe central section'overlap the ends of theend sections 7 and these overlapping ends are fastened together securely and rigidly by riv' etsor bolts- The joint formed' atv tliese overlapping ends isillustrated in detail in Fig. '5 which shows the end of the section 7 offset to fit between the flanges 8 on the section 8. This can be reversed vand the end o' the section 8 offset to fit between the flanges 7 on the section 7 ifdesired. ln the construction shown in- Fig. 5 the section 7 is providediwith shoulders 7"/ against At each end ofthe frame is a draw-bar sill 9 and this draw-bar sill is provided with side projections 10 to abut against side projections l1 on the end sections 7 of the side sills to constitute the body bolster, and also with sideV projections .12- t9 abut against side projections 12.011 the end sections of thesidesills to constitute the end sill. The proj ections' lnd '11 are made in I-form and are reduced at their ends sb that each may overlap and fit in the channel onl one side of the other, the upf-y per ange on each of' projections being cut away for this purpose (Fig. 1). f'llhe projections l2 and 1.3 overlap and-are secured together in themanner shown in Figo. j vv The body bolster is provided with a center bearing 14 and side bearings lfand' thels'de projections 11. may- Specification of Letters Patent.

to constitute parts of the center sill and an intermediate cast steel section 18 in I-forrn overlaps at its ends the ends oi the projections 17 and is riveted or bolted there# to, as shown in Fig. 3. channel forni and made oi cast or rolled steel, are riveted or bolted to lugs 20 on the side and center sills.
My invention provides a sectional underiranae of .strong and substantial construction in which the sections are adapted to be securely and rigidly fastened together in ay simple manner. The construction is such that the Whole frame will be rigid and the parts thereof will not have any objectionable relative movement.
The manner of joining the sections may be embodied in frames of other constructions than that illustrated in the drawings and I do not lim it myself to this particular embodiment. l Jhat l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an underframe for cars, a metal' side sill compris ing a plurality of sections of channel form, said sections having their adjacent ends overlapped and secured together, one of said ends being. offset to .lit rwithinthe other.
2. In an underframe 'for-cars, a metal side sill comprising a' plurality of sections of channel form having their adjacentends overlapped and fastened together, the end of one section being offset to nt within the channel of the of the .other section abuts.
