To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES, FRANCIS JENKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at' Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lilotlon-Picture Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of motion picture apparatus in which the pictures are on separate leaves bound in book form, and commonly known as thumb books. It has been found impossible, in exhibiting these books manually, to let the leaves slip from under the thumb so smoothly and evenly-timed as to produce an entirely satisfactory picture.

The object of this invention is to provide apparatus lor exhibiting the pictures of these thumb books with such precision and uniformity as to produce gratifying results.

A further object of the invention .is to provide means whereby any number of these books can be'exliibited automatically, a number limited only by the convenicni'. size of the apparatus.

The means employed to this end are described in these specifications, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows, in perspective, the general form of these thumb books i. 0., a number of leaves bound togetlicr at one end by cloth, or the like, and stitched through with wire, the leaves bearing a series of related pictures; Fig. 2 a bent elevation of. the upper part of the apparatus; and Fig. 3 a side elevation.

In the drawings, A is a standard having a grooved I drum B rotatably mounted near the top thereof, the

drum having the gear C rigidly attached thereto, said I gear being in turn driven by the pinion D, rotated by any suitable means, as, for example, the crank E.

, The picture books F are mounted on the links of the chain G, which passes over the drum B. The chain is held taut by passing under the drum B rotatably mounted on the frame H, the latter slidably mounted on the'standard, and held downwardly, to make the chain taut, by the springs I I.

At the top of the standard A is the detent I so located as to bend the cards backward to exhibit the pictures thereon one by one as the books pass thereunder in succession.

This method of mounting and exhibiting these motion picture books presents a number of advantages not the least of which is the opportunity thus afforded of arranging the books'in pictorial sequence on the chain in such manner that each book represents some particular scene, a sustained picture story, for example.

What I do claim as my invention, and Wish to protect by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. In motion picture apparatus. the combination of a series of articirlatedly connected motion picture books, and means for exhibiting the pictures of said books, the point of articulation of the connecting means lying, outside the plane of the books.

5.. In motion picture apparatus, the combination of a series of flexibly connected motion picture books, a drum of such external conformation as to detachably hold and give motion to said books daring the exhibition of the pictures thereon, and means for supporting and rotating said drum. I

3. In motion picture apparatus, the combination of a series of flexibly connected [notion picture books, a drum having longitudinal grooves therein to receive, detachably hold and impart motion to said books during the exhibition thereof, and means for supporting and rotating said drum.
