Description

No.4865,573. PATENTED SEPT. 10, 1907.
J. DILHL.A
SASH LOCK. APPLIOATION FILED DEU. 29x .19%.
A fr0/JNE YS UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEroE.
JACOB DIEHL, OF SHEBOYGAN, WISCONSIN.
SASH-LOCK.
To all whom il. may concern:
Be it known that l, JACOB DIEHL, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Sheboygan, in the county of Sheboygan and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Sash-Lock, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in sash locks, and its object is to provide a simple, inexpensive lock designed more particularly for use on cellar or basement windows of the type where the sash is hung from the upper edge.
The invention consists essentially of a slide which is to be perinanentiy fastened to the lower rail of the sash, a loop to be fastened to the window-frame, and a wedgeshaped block carried by the slide and arranged for engagement in the loop on the window-frame.
The invention will be more fully understood by reference to the accompanying description taken in connection with the an'nexed drawings, in which,-`
Figure l is a side view of the sash fastener' and so niuch of a window-sash and casing as is necessary to show the operation of the device; Fig. 2 yis a front elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section; and Fig. -l is a cross section about midway of the length of the sash fastener'.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a slide l which may be a nietal stamping of trough-shape, the two edges of which are further bent into L-shaped offsets 2-2 to constitute guides for a wedge 3. This slide is secured to the lower rail 4 of a window-sash in an upright position by means of screws 5v5, and secured to the bottoni bar of the window-casing is a loop 7 oi generally rectangular shape.
The wedge-shaped locking block 3 has the center portion depressed, as shown at 8, and of equal thickness throughout the saine, this depressed portion 8 extending longitudinally throughout the length of the block and having centrally located therein the slot 9 through which is passed a screw or rivet lO fastened to the slide l in such manner that the block 3 may be moved longitudinally in the slide for a distance determined by the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December' 29, 1906. Serial No. 350,015.
Patented Sept. 10, 1907.
length of the slot 9, and is confined against the L-shaped offsets 2 formed on the sides of the trough-shaped slide l by the head oi the screw or rivet 10.
The block is held in the slide with sufficient friction to prevent it irom spontaneously falling, and it is piovided with a linger-piece ll at its top by which it may be manipulated.
Thenorlnal position of this block 3 is with its upper end coincident with the upper end oi the slide l, and in this position its lower end will be above the loop 7. When the window is closed the block 3 is moved downward so that its lower end enters the loop 7. The outer face of the block 3 being wedge-shaped it will bind iuside the loop 7 and orce the window-sash in firm contact With the frame, thus making a tight joint therewith. At the same time the block cannot be rattled loose and cannot be disengaged from the loop 7 except from the inside.
A sash lock made in accordance with this invention is of exceedingly simple construction, devoid of springs or other devices which tend to complicate and add to the expense oi construction, and the parts may be either stamped or cast at practically little expense.
l claim l. A sash lock comprising a slide or holder designed to he fastened to a window-sash, a loop designed to he fastened to a window-trame, and a wedge-shaped locking block having a longitudinal slot therein and secured to said holder hy a headed securing` means whereby the block is free to he moved longitudinally in said holder.
:2. A sash lock comprising a slide or holder of troughshape with oilset sides, a wedge-shaped locking block seated on said offset sides of the holder and having a longitudinal slot with fastening means passingl through said slot and securing the block to the holder, and a loop for receiving the thinner end o1' said block, substantially as described.
In testimony that l claim the foregoing as my own, l
have hereto ai'hxed lny signature in the presence ot two' witnesses.
JACOB DIEHL.
