DISPLAY-COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 3, 1907.
Application filed March 9, 1907. Serial No. 361,437.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAvE E. H. RICHTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ghattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in display covers for use on tubs or pails containing candy, fruit or other commodities; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure l is a perspective view of my invention as in use. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof on about line 2-2 of Fig. 1, drawn alongside the hinge and the fastening latch, the cover being lowered in full lines and open in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a detail section illustrating the joint between the top and the hinged lid.
In the construction shown the tub A may be of any suitable construction, the cover being applied thereto and secured by screws B which latter permit the application of the cover to tubs of different sizes. The cover comprises the base ring C adapted to rest upon the top of the tub A and provided at its inner edge with the depending lugs C having threaded openings for the screws B so the devices for securing the cover upon the tub will be entirely within the latter and not exposed.
The lid D is hinged at D to the base ring C and may be provided at its diametrically opposite edge with a latch E for engagement with the ring 0 to hold the lid closed. The lid has a chamber in its upper side to receive samples of the contents of the tub and is preferably made in the form of a shallow pan having the bottom plate (1 and the cylindrical rim (1 rising therefrom and preferably beaded at d to form a stop for the top E, which top has a depending flange G to abut at its lower edge the bead (P, which is also provided with the L-shaped slots I-I cooperating with studs I on the rim of the lid in forming a bayonet joint for connecting the lid and the top. Preferably these bayonet joints HI are provided at the opposite sides of the cover and operate to secure the top detachably in connection with the rim d of the cover as will be understood from the drawing.
The top F has a ring or frame provided with the depending flange G and with an inwardly projecting flange G, the latter being provided with keepers g for holding the glass or other transpicuous portion J and the said keepers g are spaced slightly away from the flange G so the upper edge of the rim (1 will fit up around the outer edge of the plate .I and bear against the inwardly projecting flange G as shown.
A chain K may be provided to hold the cover when the latter is raisedto expose the contents of the tub.
I claim- 1. A display cover for tubs and the like, comprising a base ring having at its inner edge depending lugs and screws turning through the same to secure the ring upon the upper end of the tub, a lid hinged at one edge to the base ring and comprising a bottom plate and an upwardly projecting rim, a latch for securing the swinging edge of the lid to the base ring, a top having a frame provided with a depending flange and an inwardly projecting flange, the depending flange having in its lower edge L-shaped slots cooperating with the studs on the rim of the lid in forming bayonet joints, keepers on the inwardly projecting flange of the top and spaced apart from the depending flange thereof, and a transpicuous closure held by said keepers, the upper edge of the rim of the lid fitting around the transpicuous closure and bearing against the inwardly projecting flange of the top, substantially as set forth.
2. A display cover having a hinged lid, provided with a removable top having a transpicuous closure whereby to contain samples and expose the same to view, the top and the transpicuous closure being movable on the hinge of the lid to expose the upper end of a tub to which the cover may be applied, and the said top being removable bodily from the lid to permit unobstructed access to the sample chamber, substantially as set forth.
3. A display cover having a lid provided with a bottom plate and an upwardly projecting riln on said bottom plate and provided with a bead and above the same with lateral studs and a top having a depending flange to fit over the rim of the lid and abut the bead thereof and provided with L-shaped slots to receive the studs on said rim, the top forming a cover for a sample chamber and being remov able to permit access to the samples without displacing the lid.
4. A display cover comprising a base ring, a lid hinged at one edge to said base ring and provided with the upwardly projecting rim concentric with the base ring, a top fitting detachably on said rim and having a transpicuous closure to retain samples and expose the same to view, and a latch at the swinging edge of the lid and adapted to engage with the base ring, substantially as set forth.
5. A display cover for tubs having a lid provided with a bottom plate 01' ring to fit-the mouth of the tub, means for holding the ring to a tub and a top hinged to the ring and having a sample chamber and movable on its hinge with said chamber to a closed position over the ring to cover the tub or to an open position to expose the contents of the tub and a closure for said chamber removable bodily therefrom, substantially as set forth.
