PICKLING VAT OR BARREL.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK BnocKi-iorr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and Stateof Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pickling Vats or Barrels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

This invention relates to improvements in pickling vats or barrels particularly adapted for pickling or curing meats, and the like, and the object of the same is to produce an improved device of this character in which the barrel or vat rests upon its side, and which is adapted to be rotated to move the liquid therein, and to turn the contents, by means of paddles or wings rigidly carried within the receptacle.

A further object is to provide an improved fastening means for the cover or lid section.

And a still further object is to construct an improved device of this character which will be simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, and efficient in operation.

With a view to the attainment of these ends, and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects, as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in the construction and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully set forth in the following specification, and claimed, and shown in the accompanying drawing illustrating an example of the invention, in which- Figure 1. is a front elevation of a device of this character constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the cover fastener, showing the same in its locked position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the cover fastener showing the same in its operative position for partially unseating the cover.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, and in which the same reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 desig natcs a stand. or support, of any desired construction, and j ournaled therein are spaced rollers 2, upon which the barrel 3, of any desired shape, is adapted to rest upon its side. Said barrel is provided with a head which is preferably divided into two sections 4 and 5. The section 4 is preferably somewhat larger than the section 5, and extends beyond the diametric center of the barrel and is seated in the ordinary chime in the wall of the barrel, and with its edge preferably chamfered in the ordinary manner, as at 6. Rigidly secured within the barrel is a rod 7, one end of which is seated in any desired manner in the bottom thereof, and the free end extends for some distance through the section 4- of the head, as at 8. Rigidly secured to the rod 7, on the inside of the barrel, and in any desired manner, are any desired number of radially extending blades or wings 12, which rotate with the barrel 3 and rod 7 for turning the contents therein. thereto in any desired manner, around the projecting end of the rod 7, are a plurality of steps or lugs 13.

A projecting stud or lug 22 is secured to the periphery of the barrel in any desired manner, but preferably by belts or screws 23, and adjacent the pivotal point of connection of the handle or lever 21 with the iron 19. A catch or link 24 is pivoted to the handle or lever 21, as at 25, and is provided with a recess or cut-out portion 26 and an aperture 27, which latter is adapted to engage and receive the projecting lug or pin 22. The catch or link 24 is of such a length that when the aperture 27 therein is in engagement with the lug or pin 22, the handle 21 may be moved to the position as shown in Fig. 2, so as to bring the two pivot points 20 and 25 into a direct line to form a positive lock, the recess or cut-away portion 26 of said catch or link being adapted to be brought against the pivot 20 to permit the pivots to assume such a position.

A lever 28, of any desired shape and construction, provided with an open hooked end 29, may be provided, with which to rotate the barrel.

After the barrel has been filled and the cover closed and locked, it is placed upon its side upon the rollers 2, and at the desired intervals the lever 28 is hooked onto the extended end 8 of the rod 7 between the nuts 10 and 11, which prevents its displacement, and with the body thereof engaging any one of the steps 13 or the channel iron 19, whichever may be in the proper position, and the'barrel revolved thereby. This will cause the contents of the barrel to be raised by the wings or blades 12 and allowed to fall again, thereby turning the same over. The barrel may then be set upon its end. The handle 21 is then moved from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 3. During the first portion of the movement of the lever or handle 21, the pivot point 20 will serve as a fulcrum for the lever, and will cause the link or catch 24 to assume a substantially vertical position, as shown in Fig. 3. This catch or link is of such a length that when it assumes a substantially vertical position, the fulcrum of the lever 21 will be shifted from its pivot 20 to the pivot 25, and said lever is further depressed until the pivot point 20 is brought substantially in line with the pivot 25, which will raise the outer edge of the cover or lid section 5 from off of its seat 14, thereby loosening said cover. When in this position the catch or link may be easily disengaged from the pin or lug 22, after which the cover or lid section may be removed.

The cover or lid section is replaced and locked into position by first inserting the cleats or strips 18 under the head section t, with the catch or link 24 engaging the lug or pin 22, as shown in Fig. 3, and the lever 21 thrown over towards the center of the barrel into the position shown in Fig. 2, which will force the cover or lid section against its seat 14 and lock the same, in the manner above set forth. The beveled or inclined contacting edges 15 and 16, respectively, of the head and cover sections 4 and 5, greatly facilitate the operation.

It is to be understood that it is not desired to be limited to the exact sizes, proportions, arrangement and details of construction, of the several parts, as numerout changes may be made without departing from the spiris of the invention.

What is claimed as new and useful and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:

1. In combination, a receptacle, a cover therefor includ ing a section detachable from the cover, a common means for positioning and forcing the section to its seat and for locking the section when seated, said means being also adapted to unlock and unseat the section and comprising two members, one of said members being pivotally connected by one end to the said section, the other member being pivotally connected by one end to the receptacle, and

means pivotally connecting the two members at a point remote from the ends which are respectively connected to the section and the receptacle.

2. In combination, a receptacle, a cover comprising a fixed and a removable section, a lever carried by the removable section, and means on the lever adapted to engage the receptacle and form a fulcrum at said point of engagement for the lever to seat the section and lock the same when seated, said lever being also adapted to unlock and unseat the section.

3. In combination, a receptacle, a cover having a removable section, a lever pivoted to said section, and a catch pivoted to the lever remote from its point of connection with the section, said catch being adapted to engage the receptacle for locking the section, and to serve as a fulcrum tor the lever to unseat the section when the same is unlocked.

4. In combination, a receptacle, a cover therefor having a removable section, a lever pivoted to the section, and means carried by the lever for engaging the receptacle to lock the section, said lever being provided with two separate fulcrums, one to serve in unlocking and the other in unseating the section.

5. In combination, a receptacle, a cover therefor having a removable section, a lever pivoted to said section, and a link pivoted to the lever and removably engaging the receptacle, the pivot of said link being adapted to be moved about the pivot of the lever for locking the section.

6. In combination, a receptacle, a cover comprising a removable and a stationary section, cleats secured to the removable section and adapted to engage the lower face of the stationary section, a lever pivoted to said removable section, a link pivoted to the lever and provided with an aperture and a recess, and a lug carried by the receptacle, with which the aperture in the link engages, said lever being adapted to be moved about its pivot to bring the recess in the link adjacent said pivot point.

7. In combination, a receptacle, a removable cover, a lever pivoted to the cover and a link pivoted to the lever and removably engaging the receptacle, said lever being; movable about its pivotal point of connection with the cover to lock and unlock the same, and about its point of pivotal connection with the link for seating and unseating said cover.
