Description

tant' @sind @t tti www,
RICH'ARD MVEARS, OFV DAY-TGN, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 86,432, dated Febmawy 2', 1869.
IMPROVENIENT IN GLOBE-vALVES FOR STEAM AND OTHER ENG-INERY.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of thaaame.
To all whomtt 'ma/y conce/m.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD MEAns, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery, in the State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Globe -Valveg and `I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accom` panyin g drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereolL The vnature ot'my invention consists in casting guides within the shell, and lengthening the valve-head, thus forming a suitable guide to the valve during the process of grinding.
To enable others skilled inthe art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The gure represents a longitudinal section of the globe-valve.
` lhe construction ot' this valve is identical with those generally in use, with the exception of modifications hereafterl explained.-
VA represents the shelll F, cap-nut, having a thread, corresponding with that of the valve-stem G, by which the valve is opened and closed. v
E, a packing-nut, and A Q, the handle.
The valve-head B is mademueh longer than usual, and of the fornrshown in the drawing.
Frorn the line n to the top ofthe shell, the orice is bored sufficiently large to admit of the passage of the valve-head, and beneath this line there is open space, and about which I cast vthree guides', one of which is shown in black, at o, and the position ofthe other two is indicated by dotted lines at o. The hst' clo'ses up against the division, as showu, whilst the others may extend from the top of the shell to the seat, or-extend "suiciently downward to serve the purpose.
Thus constructed, these guides can have a lsuiiicient surface torender them durable, and not affect injuriously the passage. t
When a globe-valve is thus constructed, by'unscrewing the nut F, the valve-seat is easily ground, and the valve is retained in its true position. V
v What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv The elongated valve-head B and guides o o', constructed substantially as specied.
4RICHARD MEARS. Witnesses:
B. PICKERDIG, H. H. HENDRICK.
