ADJUSTABLE HORSE-COLLAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY A. NEWBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Loxa, in the county of Ooles and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Adjustable HorseGollar, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to adjustable horse collars.
The objects of the invention are to improve and simplify the construction of such devices; furthermore, to increase their efficiency in use and to decrease the expense attending their manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of the following claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
In the accompanying drawings forming a partof this specification :The figure is a front elevation, partly in vertical section, of a horse collar constructed in accordance with the present invention.
The improved horse collar of the present invention comprises a pair of members A'and B which.are pivotally connected with each other as indicated at 1 and 2, and are adapted to be connected at their upper ends in any suitable manner, such as by means of the conventional form of locking device F.
For the purpose of lengthening the horse collar or adjusting the same in a longitudinal manner, two adjusting devices O and D are employed, and for the purpose of widening the horse collar or adjusting the same in a lateral direction, an adjusting device E is employed. Each of the adjusting devices C, D and E preferably comprises a pair of studs 3 and 4 which project in opposite directions toward each other and are reversely threaded by providing one of the studs with a righthand thread and the other with a left-hand thread in an old and well-known manner. Engaging each pair of reversely threaded studs 3 and 4 is an adjusting sleeve 5, which is formed of any suitable metal and is provided internally at its opposite ends with reversely disposed threads to engage the studs 3 and 4. The sleeve 5 is provided externally with a casing 6, formed preferably of leather or other finishing material. It will be obvious that by grasping the adjusting sleeve 5 between the fingers and rotating the same in one direction or the other, the collar will be adjusted in any desired manner. Each of the studs 3 and 4 of the different adjusting devices is formed with a base member 7 having a threaded portion 8 to receive the threaded end of a protecting tube 9 which is provided externally with a casing 10 of leather or other similar material. The threaded portion 8 of each base member 7 is larger in diameter than the adjacent threaded stud, and the protecting tubes 9, when fitted upon the base membore 7, are concentrically arranged with respect to the studs 3 and 4 and the adjusting sleeves 5, the leather casing 6 of each adjusting sleeve being preferably of sufiicient thickness to cause it to contact with the inner portion of the protecting tube 9. The purpose of the protecting tube 9 is to cover and conceal the end of each threaded stud which is nearest the base 7 when the adjusting sleeve 5 is rotated, so as to expose a portion of the inner ends of the studs. It will be obvious, for instance, that if the protecting tubes 9 which surround the studs 4 of the adjusting devices 0 and D were not employed, the upper ends of said studs would be exposed to view when the adjusting sleeves 5 were screwed downward with respect to said studs.
The upper tubular portions 11 of the horse collar are covered with leather or other suitable material, as indicated at 12, and preferably are formed integral with or otherwise suitably secured to the bases 7 of the'studs 4 of the upper adjusting devices 0 and D. The base 7 of each of the studs 3 of the adjusting devices C and D preferably is formed with integral downwardly-extending shanks 13, which are incased in leather or other suitable material 14 in a Well-known manner, and are pivotally connected at their lower ends with the bases 7 of the adjusting device E, as indicated at 1 and 2. Each of the shanks l3 preferably is provided with a pin 15 which extends outward to the exterior of the collar and is there provided with a ring 16 intended to receive the traces or other suitable portions of the harness.
It will be noted that in all three of the adjusting devices 0, D and E the protecting tubes 9 are terminated a sufiicient distance from each other to provide an annular finger opening such as indicated by the arrows of the reference letters 0, D and E, it being understood that when it is desired to change the adjustment of the collar, the fingers of the hand are fitted into the finger opening as previously described so as to grasp the adjusting sleeves 5 to rotate the same and thus change the adjustment of the collar.
The improved horse collar of the present invention is strong, simple, durable 'and inexpensive in construction, as well as thoroughly practical in use. The casings 6 may be provided with the graduations 17, and the tubes 5 with the rings 18 through which the 'reins may pass.
What is claimed is:
A horse collar comprising a pair of members having a locking device at their upper ends, a lateral adjusting device at their lower ends, and a longitudinal adjusting device connected with each of said members, each of said adjusting devices comprising a pair of revers ely-threaded studs, an adjusting sleeve having reversely arranged threads to engage said studs, a threaded base connected with each stud, a protecting tube connected With'each threaded base, the two threaded tubes of each adjusting device being separated from each other to form a finger opening through which the adjusting sleeve can be grasped,
and pivotal connections between the lateral and longitu- 1G dinal adjusting devices.
