HERBERT CLAY BLUTHENTHAL, OF PINE BLUFF, ARKANSAS.
SHOE-POLISHER.
Speeicaton ofxLetters Patent.
Patented Aug'. 20, 1907.
Application filed July 31,1906. Serial No. 328,605.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, 'HERBERT CLAY BLUTHENTHAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pine Bluff, in the county of Jefferson and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Shoe-Polisher, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to acombined dauber, brush, and polisher for shoes, harness, etc., and has for its object to provide means to protect the hand from dirt and polish, while either the brush or polisher is in use.
The invention consists in a movably mounted guard arranged in such relation to the brush and polisher as to be used as a cover for either, and in certain details of construction hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings in which I have illustrated one embodiment of the inventionz-Figure l is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View therethrough, and Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line A-A of Fig. 2, as shown by the arrows.
Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, l designates the usual wooden body-portion of a brush that is provided at each end with a recess 2. On one side of the body-portion is mounted an ordinary bristle brush 3, and on the opposite side thereof is located a plurality of thicknesses of felt 4, or other cushioning material, the under strip being of less'length than the outer one, and both firmly held in position by tacks 5-5. Over these layers of felt is mounted the polisher G, preferably made of sheepskin, with the wool side facing out, the ends of which are fastened in the recess 2-2 by means of tacks 7-7, thereby giving the polishing surface a rounded form, which will enable an article to be more easily polished.
A common type of dauber 8 is lsecurely held in position against one end of the body, and in projecting relation thereto by a fastening screw 9. It is located between the two polishing surfaces. Pivotally mounted upon the body-portion is a metallic guard or cover 10, retained in position at one end by a screw ll, and at the opposite end by the screw 9. The guard or cover is constructed of tin or other sheet metal', and is of substantially the same length and width as the body portion. The two opposite sides of the guard are provided with downwardly extending flanges 12-12, running the entire length of the same. These anges prevent the hand from becoming damaged, and also serve to keep the guard in a normally fixed position by engaging the outer sides of either the brush or the polisher, as the case may demand. Integral with, and at right angles to, the guard are two ears 12%*1-3, which are tapered towards the pivots, on which they are joiunaled, and below which they are rounded, as shown at 14-14, thereby securing as great freedom of action as possible.
The guard, which is of substantially the same width as the body portion, is arranged in close proximity thereto so that the hand may embrace the guard and grasp both sides of the body-portion, and thus prevent the guard from swinging.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that when the brush is to be used, the guard or cover is swung around upon the pivots 9-11, so as to cover the polisher, or Vice versa, thus effectually preventing contact of the hand and the surface on which the guard is positioned.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I wish to claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
1. The combination with a body having brushing and polishing surfaces on opposite sides thereof, of a guard movable over either surface, a dauber, and common means for securing the guard and the dauber to the body.
2. The combination with a body having brushingand polishing surfaces on its opposite sides, of a dauber Iocated at one end of said body, fastening means securing the dauber to the body, and a guard journaled on the fastening means and movable to a position over either surface.
3. The combination with a solid wooden body having brushing and polishing surfaces on opposite sides, of :1 metallic guard provided with inwardly extending longitunal anges, and ears at each end, said guard being of substantially the same width as the body and arranged in close proximity to but not in engagement with 'either of the surfaces on the body, thereby permitting the hand to engage over the guard and grasp both side edges of the body, and means for pivotally connecting the ears to the ends of the body.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HERBERT CLAY BLUTHENTHAL.
