To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lvALTER LE QUESNE, residing at Don street, Jersey, Channel Islands, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Sashes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in window sashes of the class which are capable of sliding up and down in the ordinary manner and further turn upon hinges out into the room when required, the object of the present invention being to provide a device of this kind of improved and simple construction whereby the various movements of the sashes may be accomplished more readily than hitherto.
In order that this invention may stood, it will now be described with accompanying drawings, in which Figurel is a front elevation of a two-sash window constructed according to this invention, Fig. 2 is a sectional plan taken on line :v x, Fig. 1, but with the sashes in their lowest positions and opened out into the room, and Fig. 3 is a partial vertical section with the lower sash .and the balance weight removed.
In carrying this invention into practical effect, and as shown in the drawings, two vertical tubes a, a are secured in the side framing b of the window, each tube beinglongitudinally split or divided at the front, and into each tube a second tube or rod 0, c enters and is free to slide up and down therein upon friction rollers (I (Fig. 3) pivoted in recesses formed in the said tubes or rods 0, c or if desired these tubes or rods may travel upon suitable ball bearings or the like. A preferably metallic strip 6 is secured to each of the inner tubes or rods c, c, and projects through the longitudinal slots in the tubes a, a, while to each strip 0 outside its corresponding tube a second strip e is secured, carrying hinges c for the attachment of the sashes f, f, and in this manner it will be seen that each sash is supported by one of the inner tubes or rods 6, 0, through the medium of one of the flanges or strips 6 projecting through the longitudinal slot in its outer tube a or a and as the inner tube or rod slides up and down within its corresponding outer tube it carries the sash with it. In the case of the strip carrying the upper sash f, I prefer to construct it in the form shown in Fig. 2 and furnish a strip 9 designed to engage the be fully underreference to the l I i recess therein, thereby preventing the inlet of wet and the like.
In order to secure the opposite sides of the sashes, they are provided with small studs cairying rollers 72. which enter vertical boxes or recesses i in the opposite side of the window frame and each box or recess may be furnished with one or more cuts or openings j (Figs.
' l and 3) to admit of the studs and rollers h passing out of the vertical boxes 01' recesses to allow oi the sashes turning out on their hinges, and as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, I prefer to arrange the openings j in such positions that the lower sash has to be raised slightly and the upper sash lowered in order to bring the rollers h opposite the said openings j for turning out the sashes, while suitable flanges 7c are formed upon the sashes and sides of the boxes or recesses respectively, designed to overlap to prevent the inlet of wet or the like when the sashes are closed.
One balance weight Z only is used in connection with each sash and each is connected to the top of one of the sliding tubes or rods 0, 0 through the medium of a suitable flexible connection on (Fig. 3) which passes over a pulley n so as to bring the weight to the side of the window.
Any well known and convenient means for locking the sashes when closed, may be employed, but as shown, the sash f is furnished with a bolt 0 designed to engage recesses in the window frame and the said sash f also carries a thumb screw or the like 0 the extremity of which is designed to engage suitable holes or perforations 0 formed in a plate carried by the sash f and by these means the said sashes may be locked in any convenient position, whether closed or open.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination, with a window-frame of a guide-tube secured to the said frame and having a slot in one side, a slide movable vertically in the said guide-tube, a plate secured to the said slide and provided with a longitudinal channel or slot, a stationary strip or plate secured to the said window-frame and projecting into the said longitudinal channel, and a window-frame hinged to the free end portion of the said slidable plate.
