STONEWORKING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13,1991.
Application filed October 31, 1904. Serial No. 230,863;
To all whom it may'eoncern:
. to it known that I, lions -ROYDEN PEIRGE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of-Man- I especially for coping stone, that is to say, for cutting slabs into sizes for wall facings or the like. The machine is also adapted to cut st ne in various other ways. I
The machine, though preferably used with a rotating carborund um wheel, is adapted also for use with cutters of various other styles. i
The accompanying drawings illustrate a machine embodying the invention.
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view showing the cutting headand itssupports in front elevation. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a plan made in two separate parts.
Figs. 4 and 5 are vertical, transverse sections of the cutter head in two different positions.
An important feature of the machine, independently of the particular sort of cutter used, is the construction from its holder, lengthwise and transverse cuts may be made to cut the rough slab into a rectangular coping. These two movements are preferably obtained by utilizing the longitudinally-moving bed to secure cuts in a longitudinal direction, and holding said bed stationary while moving the cutter across it to cut in a transverse direction (the cutting edge of the cutter being preferably adjustable about a vertical axis).
for the stone is in the form of sin-ordinary planer bed A to which the stone may be clamped, and which receives longitudinal movement by means of a screw-threaded -shaft B which is connected atone end by means of a worm C with across shaft D. Extending acrossthe 40 bed is afframe which carries the cutter and which is composed ofup rightsE and horizontal guides F along which moves thecutter head, which is indicated .as a
whole .by the letter G. The cutter head is carried directly in. a carriage H which slides upon the guides F ofithe cross head and which receives its transverse movementfrom a screw-threaded shaft J passingthrough a suitably threaded portion of the carriage and fixed at its ends in the uprights E. The head G is ver tically adjustable in-the carriage H by means of a grooved shaft K working in a spindle worm-wheel L -wl1ich drives a similar worm-wheel .L which is internally threaded and causes an up-and-down' movement of the vertical screw shaft M fastened in a cross-bar N at the rear of-the head. The guides F are in fact the K are provided, for purposes of adjustment, with handwheels R and S at the front of the machine.
When it is'desired to make a longitudinal cut, the stone is clamped upon the bed in the usual way, the
--hand-wheel R is, turned to give the desired lateral adjustment to the cutter T, and the hand-wheel S is turned to adjust it vertically. The cutter is then held with rigidity, which is an important matter, anddn exactly the desired line and level. The cutter is then rotated at a high rate of speed by means of a pulley U on the cutter shaft V, and a belt W which runs to the top of the head G and over a pair of pulleys X and Y to any suitable driving drum pulley Z arranged overhead andat a sufficient distance to permit the desired Vertical and lateral adjustments of the cutter. .The usual longitudinal movementof the bed A will then be effected by pushing the lever a in the direction of the arrow Fig'. 1, which, by means of a link b and lever c,'will throw the clutch block (1 into positidn to engage the shaft D and move the bed accordingly. The clutch and driving connections may be of any suitable style, the clutch block at being splined, for example, upon a power shaft e. For making a transverse cut, means are provided for applying power to the shaft J to move the cutter across and through the stone. With a rotating cutter such as .T, it is essential also that the cutter be adjusted to the direction of the cut. Accordingly the shaft V of the I cutter is mounted in a block f which is held in the lower Referring to the embodiment illustrated, the holder end of the cutter head G by means of a circular rib g rotating in a corresponding groove in the lower end of the cutter head. The cutter head is provided with'a movable section it for permitting the insertion of the block f. The amount of angular-movement of the block f is unlimited, and it may be desirable to work it at various angles, but for ordinary purposes the only transverse cut desired will be one at i'ight angles to the longitudinal cut. In order to determinethe right-angle position the block f is provided with a pin j adapted to fit into either one of two sockets k inllugs kat right angles to each other upon the iront oi the cutter head, the locking pinj being carried by a hand-lever l which is held upward by a spring m.
clutch d have adjacent clutch faces; so that when the As stated above, the details of the clutches are not of importance, but it is preferred to arrange the clutches so as to obtain most easily the operations described. For example, the power shaft 0 may be driven in one direction by means of a conical pulley p, the shaft being supported in bearings q. The movement in the reverse direction is ohtained irom a pulley 1', both pulleys r and 7) being loose on the shaft 0. A second clutch block s is splined to the shaft 0 and arranged to engage either the pulley r or the pulley 7) according as it is shifted in 'one direction or the other by means of a rod t supported at one end in a bearing (1 and connected at its other end to one arm of a bell-crank-lever u, the other arm of which is connected by means of a link 1) to a hand lever w at the center and front of the mach ine.
No claim is made in the present application to the cutting of the stone by means of a thin wheel of agglomstone adapted to move longitudinally, a common power,
shaft, and a clutch which clutches the cutter or holder alternately to said power shatt.
2. A stone cutting apparatus including, in combination, a cutter head G,'a cutter shaft V, a block 1' carrying said cutter shaft and adjustable about a vertical axis in the lower end of said cutter head. a shaft .7 for moving said cutter hezid laterally, and means loixeluii'hing said shaft J to a power shaft r In witness whereof, -i have heryunto signed my mime in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
