Description
w. R. HUNTER.
Car-Axle Box.
Patented Jan. 26, 1869.
Nv PEl'E-RS. PHOT fate WILLIAM R; HUNTE R. OF ERIE,PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- W a M i y ge r SELF AND GEORGE C. BENNETT, OF THE SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 86,230, dated January 26, 1869.
IMPROVED CAR-AXLE BOX.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and snaking part of the same.
To all whom't't may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. HUNTER, Erie, in the county of Erie, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Cover for Oar-Axle Box; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being'had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification;
The object of this invention is to provide a means for.
always tends to hold it in the position to lock the cover.-
When the cover is raised to a position perpendicular to its position when closed, it may also be locked in that position.
The drawing represents a cover provided with my improved locking-device, shown in section.
A represents the cover, the hole throngh'the ear of which, for the pintle, is for some distance made square. The hole through one of the ears of the box is also made square, and the pintle B is provided with a corresponding square portion next to the head, and arranged to slide freely therein.
In the other ear of the box the pintle is provided with a coiled spring, which bears, at one end, against the ear of the cover, and at the other against a sleeve, 0, fitted on the end of the pintle, which projects sufiiciently beyond the hinge-j oint to admit of being thrust back, so as to remove the square portion of the pintle from the square socket in the ear of the cover, when the latter may be raised or lowered, as desired.
The square hole in the ear of the box is so arranged, with reference. to that in the ear of the cover, that, when the cover is closed down on the box, the bolt-will be drawn into the position to lock the cover in that position by the spring. The cover may also be locked in an open position, at right angles to that when closed.
Instead of makingthe holes square, as. described, they may be round and provided with grooves, and the pintle may be'provided with a spline, to lock in the said grooves.
I am aware of the patent granted to S. F. Shelley, January 10, 1865, wherein is shown a cover provided with a cam-joint hinge and a reciprocating spring-bolt,
the frictional contact of the cam, which I consider ob- V jectionable, for the reason that the cover is not locked cover cannot be moved without first moving the bolt. I therefore do not claim a locking-device broadly.
'Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'The pintle B, provided with a square portion, and arranged to slide in a square hole in the ear of the box, and to look into a square socket in the ear of the cover, and with a retaining-spring, substantially as and for the purpose described.
The above specification-of my invention signed by me, this 8th day of June, 1868.
Welt. HUNTER.

whereby the cover may beheld in different positions by securely thereby, whereas, by my arrangement, the,
