Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIOE.
.ALBERT HENRY MIGHAELIS AND WILLIAM H. FOLL, OF FREEPORT, ILLINOIS.
SASH-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1907.
Application filed May 15,1907. Serial No. 373,778.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that ALBERT HENRY MroHAELIs and WILLIAM H. FoLL, citizens of the United States, residing at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of fasteners or locks for windows wherein the respective members of the fastener are mounted on the meeting rails of the sashes, and which lock automatically When'the window is closed.
The object of the invention is to form an improved device of the kind, the particulars of which will be shown and described herein and in the'accompanying drawings, v
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the fastener. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof on the line 2-2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a cross section thereof on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig., 4 is a perspective view of the keeper or member attached to the upper sash.
The device consists of two members one of which is attached to the upper sash and the other of which is attached to the lower sash, the meeting rails of which are indicated, respectively, at 6 and 7. The keeper or socket piece attached to the upper sash consists of a plate 8 secured at its ends to the sash by means of screws or the like, as indicated at 9, and having an elongated socket l0 formed on top thereof. The top of this socket or keeper is provided at its front edge with a bead or roll l1, which may be strengthened by a wire inside, and which receives the impact of the latch bolt when the sashes are closed. The rear side 12 of the socket is inclined slightly from the vertical, so that when the members of the fastener come together, as hereinafter explained, it will tend to draw the meeting rails of the sashes together, and bind them tightly so as to avoid a crack or looseness between the rails. The socket piece is set back some distance from the meeting face of the rail.
, The member attached to the lower sash comprises a plate 13 secured at its side edges to the rail 7, by means of screws 14, and this plate has thereon a casing 15 which contains a spring latch bolt 16, having a pin and button 17 extending through a slot 18 in the top of the casing, whereby the latch bolt may be manipulated. At the front end the casing is offset laterally or en larged, as indicated at 20, to form a hollow head which is open on the .under side, and is of proper size and shape to receive Within the same the keeper 10 on the upper sash. The head fits over the keeper at a snug fit when the parts are closed, and the outer or forward side 21 ofthe head contacts with the inclined side 12 of the keeper and coperates therewith to draw the meeting rails of the sash together, when closed, as above described. The plate 13 and casing l5 project beyond the meeting face of the rail so as to span the crack therebetween, and the catch is therefore not in line with the crack and cannot be sprung back or opened by forcing a blade up between the rails. The close manner in which the hollow head 20 fits over the socket or keeper piece, both at the sides and at the ends, serves to hold the sash together and prevent any lateral movement or rattling and forms a tight bind at the meeting rails, to exclude wind and cold. When the sashes are closed the spring catch, striking the edge l1 of the keeper, snaps over the same and engages thereunder.
We claim:
1. A sash fastener comprising a casing attached to the rail of the lower sash and projecting beyond or over the meeting edge thereof and having a hollow head at the end over the rail of the upper sash, and also having a spring latch bolt within said head, and a socket member attached to the rail of the upper sash and shaped to fit closely within said head when the sashes are closed and having a cavity to receive the end of the latch bolt.
2. A sash fastener comprising a socket member secured to the meeting rail of the upper sash and having its outer wall inclined, and a casing attached to the meeting rail of the lower sash and having an enlarged hollow head projecting beyond the meeting edge and constructed to inclose the socket and bear against said inclined wall, to draw the rails together, and a spring latch bolt in the casing, adapted to engage in the socket.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures, in presence of two witnesses.
