Description

o. 862,022. PATENTED JULY so, 1907.
F.S0HfiTT,JR. AIR TIGHT covEE FOR SHEET METAL CANS.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.21, 1905.
FRANZ SOHUTT, JR., OF GHRINGEN, GERMANY.
AIR-TIGHT COVER FOR SHEET-METAL CANS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1907.
Application filed A gus 21,1905. $erial No. 275,128.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, FRANZ Sonora, Jr, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at Ohringen, in the for Sheet-Metal Cans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to'closures for sheet metal cans and other receptacles.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an air-tight cover, which may be readily locked in closed position, and which may be opened by a single movement.
A further object isto provide a novel form of cover and cover-attaching means, which may be manufactured at low cost and applied to sheet metal cans or other receptacles in common use.
With these, and other objects in view, the invention consists in the combination of parts referred to in the specification and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a vertical section of the upper portion of a can or other receptacle, provided with a cover constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view through the neck of the can; and'Fig. 4 is a plan view of the device.
Similar reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
The can a may be of ordinary construction, and is provided with a neck b, the wall of which is provided with vertically arranged stiffening grooves c. The upper edge of the neck is provided with a rounded bead d. Secured to the rear of the neck is a loop or yoke e,
having an opening for the reception of an eye 0, that is formed at the lower end of the vertical arm 'n, of a sheet metal strap g.
The cap or cover 41 is dished at the center to form an annular groove h, and the inner face of the cover is provided with a suitable lining or packing disk which, when pressed down against the beaded top, will form an air-tight closure for the can.
The strap g extends diametrically across and is secured to the top of the cover, its front end extending downward in the form of an arm 70, which is turned or beaded, forming an eye Z in which is hung a ring m.
To the front of the can is secured a small plate having its upper end turned outward or beaded to form a catch f, for engagement with the bead l.
The strap g is preferably formed of spring metal, so that in closing, it is merely necessary to press the cover down until the bead Z engages under the catch f. To unlock, the ring m is pulled outward and the bead disengaged, a continuation of the movement sufficing to throw the cover back and leaving the whole of the beaded edge d free for filling and pouring operations.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination, a receptacle having at one side a pivoting member and at the opposite side a catch, a cover having an annular recess or groove to receive the mouth of the receptacle, a spring metal strap extending across the cover and provided at each end with a pendant arm, the rear arm engaging thepivoting, member, and the-front arm having an eye or bead to interlock with the catch, and a pull ring carried by said eye or bead.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANZ scnij'r'r, JR.
Witnesses 5 AUGUST DRANTZ, WALTER SCHWAEBSCII.
