To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that l, JAMES A. WHEELER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fireproof Doors, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description. t.
This invention consists in a .novel construction of doors designed to`be perfectly lreproof, which construction dispenses with the use of metal as a material of the main portion or body of the door and thus obviates the liability of expansion and contraction and also the warping of the door, and rupture of its joints incident to its exposure to severe changes of temperature, and which construction also reduces the weight of the door, as will be hereinafter explained.
ln the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary face view of a lire-prooi door embodying my present invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on the line -X-X- in Fig. 1.
-aarepresent two boards which form the entire two sides of the door. Said boards are composed of asbestos rendered hard and compact by treatment with suitable chemicals in any suitable and well known manner.
b-- denotes a frame which may be formed from wood or other suitable non-metallic material capable of bracing the door. Said frame is interposed between the boards -aa is formed with rails extending along the margins of the boards and is also preferably formed with a rail -b1- across the central portions of the boards as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Said frame aside from its function of bracing the boards -a-a-, also forms between said boards air-spaces -c-cextending from the central portion to the sideand end-margins of the door and thereby augments the hre-proof quality of the door. The boards -a-aare iirmly secured tov the said frame, preferably by means of bolts -d-d passing transversely through the boards and intervening frame.
To protect the edges of the described door, l apply thereto a metal band -6- of a width equal to the thickness of the door and preferably form said band with flanges -e1-e1- which are inserted between the boards -a-aand frame -band are perforated for receiving through them the tie-bolts -dto fasten l 'ing through the margins of the said band to the door. The width of the band -eis terminated at the edges of the door to obviate exposure of said band on the face of the door, and, inasmuch as the band is concealed in the jamb of the doorcasing when the door is closed, the said band is shielded from the heat of lire which may approach the door.
To conceal the bolts -d-tZ-dso as to cause the face of the door to present a smooth and ornamental surface, a veneer fr is applied to one or both sides ol the door according to the location and purpose of the door. v
ln assembling the component parts of the door the [rame -bis first formed from rails of wood or other suitable stout non-metallic material, securely fastened to each other at their ends in any suitable manner. This frame is then reinforced `by applying thereto the metal band -e, which, by its flanges -e1-e-, embraces the said frame. Then the asbestos boards -a-aare placed upon opposite sides of the frame -band fastened thereto, preferably by means of the bolts -fl-dwhich pass through the rails of the frame and the intervening flanges -e1-e1- of the metal band a This construction and combination of the component parts forms a very strong and light vlireproof door which is free from liability of being warped out of shape or otherwise seriously injured by exposure to iire.
What l claim as my invention is:-
1. A. hollow iireproof door composed of a non-metallic frame consisting of rails extending along the margins of the door, and a rail across the central portion of the door, a reinforcing metal band of a width corresponding to the thickness of the door and formed with flanges embracing the frame, asbestos boards attached to opposite sides of said trame and constituting the faces of the door and covered at their edges by the aforesaid band, and bolts passintervening frame-rails and liand-iianges and uniting the said component parts of the door as set forth and shown. 2. A rire-proof door composed of boards of solidified asbestos forming opposite sides of the door, an interposed frame extending along the margins of the boards and formed with a rail across the central portions of the boards, said frame forming air-spaces between the boards, bolts tying the boards to the frame, and a metal band applied to the edges of the door and formed with flanges interposed between the boards and frame as set forth.
