AP ILIOATIO-N FILED JUNE 26, 1008.-
ROBERT E. REDMOND, OF NEW CASTLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
WASI-IIN G-MACHIN E Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed June 26,1906.
Patented July 30, 1907. Serial No. 323,501.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT E. REDMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at'New Castle, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new anduseful lmpro vement in Washing- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a washing machine adapted for use with an ordinary wash tub and which can be transferred from one tub to another if desired.
The invention consists of the novel features of constrnction hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device shown in position, a portion of a tub being broken away and shown in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken diametrically through the tub. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a cross-bar. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the inner end portion of a handle. Figs. 6 and 7 are detail elevations, showing side and front views, respectively, of the lower end of certain standards.
In these drawings, A represents a wash tub to which are hinged upon opposite sides standards B, perforated as shown at B, each standard being provided with a hinged extension 13 which is fixed to the sides of the tub A.
To hold the standards l? in vertical position when the device is in use I provide a cross rod B which connects the upper ends of the standard, a thumb nut of the usual kind working upon said rod.
A cross bar C, has its end portions pivotal] y mounted in the perforations P), of the standards Ti and is provided midway its ends with arms C at right angles to the cross-bar C. One of these arms is provided near its free end with a vertically arranged and perforated boss C and the other arm near its free end is provided with oppositely arranged lugs (1 A handle D, is adapted to rest upon the arm C and is secured to one of them by a bolt and thumb nut D, the bolt perforated boss 0 The inner end of the handle D, is provided with hooks D which engage respectively, the lugs C thereby locking the handle to the arms C.
To the free ends of each of the arms 0 are secured tripods E, and I prefer to connect the tripods pivotally passing through the l l l l to the ends of the. arms C, by means of ordinary belts and nuts.
Semi-cylindrical pounders F, are carried by the lower ends of the tripods, and along the adjacent straight edges of the pounders, which are spaced slightly apart, are vertical flanges F, which prevent water flowing from one ponnder as it is elevated over the other pounder, which correspondingly depressed.
in order to hold the curved edges of the poundcrs close to the sides of the tub A, a spring G is arranged between the tripods E, and tends to force them apart thereby holding the pounders sulliciently close to the sides of the tub to prevent the clothes from working up between the edges of the pounders and the sides of the tub.
B y means of the perforations B the cross bar C can be adjusted vertically so that the pounders will work the proper depth accordingto the size of the wash.
The operation of the device is as follows :lhe parts being arranged in position the handle D is moved Verti cally thus rocking the cross bar 0, and the pounders F will be alternately lifted and depressed. one of said pounders rising as the other descends.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a wash tub. hinged standards carried thereby. a cross bar pivotally mounted in said standards. arms carried by the cross bar. a handle connect cd to said arms, tripods pivotally connected to said arms, semicircular pounders carried by the tripods. a spring arranged between said tripods, and means 1 locking the hing-ed standards in vertical position.
2. In a washing machine a rockablc cross bar. arms carried by said bar. one of said arms having a vertically perforated boss and the other arm having oppositely arranged lugs. a handle adapted to rest upon said arms and having hooks at one end to engage the lugs, a thumb bolt adapted to pass through the perforated boss and through the handle and lock the arm and handle together, and pounders suspended from said arms.
3. In a washing machine the combination able shaft having arms, tripods pivotally said arms, semi-clrcular pounders carried by the lower end of the tripod, vertical flanges arranged along the st aig'ht edges 01' said pounders and a spring arranged between the tripods.
