Description
No. 861,420. PATENTED JULY 30, 1907.
W. H. F.. YOUNG.
GOMBINED LOCK AND LATCH.
APPLICATION TILED JUNE 18, 1906.
M I A from EM UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. F. YOUNG, OF MUNOIE, INDIANA.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. F. YOUNG, acitizen of the United States, residing at Muncie, in the county of Delaware and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Combined Lock and Latch, of which the following is a specification.
1 This invention relates to locks and latches for use on doors and similar structures, the principal object of the invention being to provide a novel form of thumb latch mechanism for operating the latch bolt.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel form of thumb latch and key actuated mechanism for moving the sliding latch bolt, the arrangement being such that one mechanism may be operated without interiering with the other.
With these and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangementoi parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawingsz-Figure l is a transverse sectional view of a door provided with a lock and latch mechanism constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference are, employed to indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures oi the drawings.
In carrying out the invention, the latch casing 32 may be of any ordinary construction and is provided with a plurality of hubs or roll backs arranged to independently engage a slidable latch bolt 12.
To the outer face of the door is secured an escutcheon plate 14 carrying a suitable lock 36 from which projects a lock spindle 34 for actuating the latch bolt, said spindle being connected in suitable manner to one of the roll backs. Around the spindle 34 extends a spindle 30 having a circular bore, so that either spindle may rotate independently of the other. The periphery of the-spindle 30 is square, and is connected in suitable manner to one of the hub or roll back members, so that when said spindle is turned, the latch bolt may be withdrawn, without turning the lock spindle 34.
On the outer face of the hub is arranged the sleeve 96 which is held from lateral displacement by a pair of wings 97 forming part of a bracket 98 that is secured to the inner face oi the escutcheon plate. From the collar projects an arm 99 that is connected by a link 100 to a lever 101, one end of which is pivoted by a pin 102 carried by the escutcheon plate.
The outer face of the escutcheon plate is provided with a pair of pivoted lugs 103, between which is piv- Specification of Letters Patent.

COMBINED LOOK AND LATCH.
Patented July 30, 1907.
oted a thumb latch 104. The inner end of the thumb latch projects through a slot formed in the escutcheon plate, and is arranged immediately under the lever 101, so that when the outer end of the thumb latch is depressed, its inner end will be raised, and in moving upward the lever 101 will be elevated and collar 96 will be turned, thereby turning the spindle 30 and moving the latch bolt back to release position.
When pressure on the thumb latch is relieved, the latch bolt is restored to locking position by the spring usually employed for that purpose, while the levers 99 and 101 fall to normal position by gravity.
It will be understood that on the opposite side of the door from the latch and lock hereinbeiore described there will be another escutcheon plate and another latch with mechanism connecting the same to the lock spindle, which mechanism and latch may be a duplicate of the latch and mechanism shown, or an ordinary knob may be substituted for the latch and a locking device for preventing the turning of the spindle, controlled by the latch or latches, may be used, so that from the inside of the door the outer latch may be locked against movement while the lock is still free to be operated to retract the bolt and thereby unlock the door. The mechanism which may be used on the inner face of the door forms no part of the present invention, and, therefore, is not here shown. As an example of such mechanism, reference may be had to my co-pending application, 322,247, where the latchoperating mechanism with an inside locking device is shown. In stating that the mechanism to go on the inside of the door is a duplicate of that shown on the out side of the door in the drawings, it is to be understood that the spindles are so arranged as to telescope so that the parts may be fitted to doors of various thicknesses, as will be readily apparent.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class specified, the combination with a latch bolt, of a latch bolt operating spindle, a collar mounted on the spindle, an arm projecting from the collar, a thumb latch, an escutcheon plate to which said thumb latch is pivoted, a lever pivoted to the escutcheon plate, and with which the inner end of the thumb latch engages, and a link connecting the lever to the arm.
2. In a device of the class specified, the combination with a'latch bolt, of a latch bolt operating spindle, a collar mounted on said spindle, a two armed bracket having openings for receiving the reduced end portions of said collar, an arm projecting from the collar, a thumb latch, an escutcheon plate to which the thumb latch is pivoted, a lever pivoted to the escutcheon plate, and with which the thumb latch engaged, and a link connecting said lever to the arm.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. F. YOUNG.
