Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDGAR O. WnLLs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Helena, in the county of Andrew and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, ielerence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specilication.

The object of my invention is to provide a means for holding carpets stretched upon floors and fastened at their edges without the use of tacks or staples and I accomplish my object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in Which,-

Figure l is a perspective of the floor of a room, partly broken away, the baseboards, a door frame and molding, metal base plates attached to the molding and a carpet held in position thereunder and a door outlet with a threshold piece adapted to support a metal base attachment similar to those attached to the molding; Fig. 2 is a detail rear view of a foot plate adapted to be rigidly fastened to the floor; Fig. 3 a detail of a molding showing a slot therein; Fig. 4 is a detail bottom view of a base plate attachment on a molding, a slot therein corresponding with the slot shown in Fig. 3 and adapted to engage with'said foot plate, said metal base having its front edge bent downward and backward with teeth thereon adapted to engage with a carpet; Fig. 5 is a section of Fig. 4 cut across the center of the slot and showing a foot plate in engagement therewith, and Fig. 6 is a detail bottom view of a threshold piece, its base plate and teeth, and

H Hare metal foot plates adapted to be rigidly attached to the floor close to the baseboards and preferably set about 2!;- or 3 feet distances apart. edges of these foot plates are turned upward forming flanges H H.

I I-are metal strips forming base plate attachments under the molding, and rigidly attached thereto. They are preferably cut in sections of 2% to 3 feet long each provided with a slot J corresponding in size to fit around the opening in one of slots .T .I-in the bottom of the molding thus permitting a flange H to engage with said slot and hold the molding and its metal base attachments rigidly up against the base board,

The front thereby wholly dispensing with any necessity for fastening the molding to the floor or baseboard by the use of nails or brads.

K K are teeth somewhat similar to saw teeth which being slightly turned downward and backward towards the baseboard are adapted when a carpet is stretched upon a floor to grip or take hold of the carpet as the molding is crowded up against the baseboard and slots J and .I are dropped down into engagement with'flange H of the foot plate: The carpet is thus held securely at its edges underneath the molding and said molding are held firmly against the baseboards by said foot plates, tacks being thus wholly dispensed with and the appearance of the carpet upon the fioor of the room greatly enhanced.

For a doorway or opening, a threshold piece 0 is used somewhat similar to the ordinary threshold strip but provided with baseplate attachments and teeth similar to those already described, the slots omitted. These threshold pieces may be held firmly in position by strips P P rigidly attached to ends of the threshold piece and extending sufliciently above the horizontal line of said piece to permit the upper ends to be fastened on the frame of the doorway or opening.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a carpet fastener the combination with a base board, and a quarter round molding provided with slots, of a foot plate adapted to be rigidly fastened on the floor, a vertical projection thereto spaced from the baseboard, a metal base plate provided with slots corresponding with those in the molding rigidly attached on the bottom of said molding, its front edge turned under, the teeth thereon turned backward, said molding being held rigidly against the base board by the foot plate flange engaging with the molding and base plate slots, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a carpet fastener the combination with the frame of a door and a threshold piece of a metal base plate rigidly attached to said threshold piece, its edge turned downward and a plurality of contiguous teeth thereon turned backwardly, adapted to form close engagement with the edge of a carpet, and the vertical end strips thereon to form engagement with a door frame, substantially as described and shown.

3. In a carpet fastener the combination with a quarter round molding, and foot plates adapted to hold a flat side of said molding from top to bottom rigidly against a base board, of base plates extending longitudinally under, the entire length of said molding and rigidly attached ther'eto, the front edge turned downward and backward and the plurality of contiguous teeth along said entire edge bearing backward underneath the molding, substantially as set forth and shown.
