STEAM-FLUE CLEANER OR BLOWER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 80, 1907.
Application filed August 2'], i906. Serial N- 332,183.
\ companying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in steam flue cleaners or blowers and its object is to provide a portable device or tool for the purpose which may be readily inserted in or removed from an opening provided therefor in-the back wall of boilers and which is so constructed that the size of the stream. of steam injected may be accurately regulated at will and will be so directed into the tubes as to efiectually clean the. same;
'A further .object of the invention is to provide a device having the several advantages of the particular construction, arrangement and combination of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying the invention showing the same in operative position within the rear end of a boiler which is shown in vertical section; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the boiler showing the openings for the insertion of the blower; Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal section of the blower; Fig. 4
is a perspective view of the nozzle plug or deflector.
1 represents the rear end of the boiler in which is located the usual vertical smoke-box 2 with the tubes or flues 3 extending horizontally therefrom, and 4 are sleeves or thimbles extending through the vertical rear wall of the boiler and the wall of the smoke-box forming openings intothe box through which the extended tubular body 5 of the blower may be inserted.
On the outer end of the tubular body 5 of the blower is secured a 1 head 6 the upper opening of which is closed by a screw plug? and into the lower end of whichis screwed any suitable coupling 8 for the attachment of a flexible hose 9 for conducting steam under pressure to the blower. l i
10 is a peculiarly shaped plug or deflector head held deflector which is adjustably held thereon by alocknut 12 the rod extending longitudinally in the axis of the body through a suitable bearing therein and outward through'a screw-threaded, opening in-the '1 headand through a stufiing b0 13 thereon. Said rodis screw-threaded to engage the screw-threaded'opening' The plug or deflector 10 is formed at one side withfan incline or slanting surface 15 extending inward from its rim or edge toits hub or center and this surface has a slight spiral form longitudinally of the plug so that when the plug is drawn into the end of the body until said surface contacts said end at one point, the head being of greater diameter at that side than the diameter of the body, a tapering slot 16 will be formed between said end and said surface through which the steam will be discharged at an angle to the axis of the body or in a lateral direction in a stream of varying thickness. At the opposite side of said plug a V groove 17 is formed through which steam will escape in a direction parallel with the longitudinal axis of the body.
When the device is inserted in one of the openings 4 provided therefor and the plug turned by turning the rod, the laterally projected steam is directed into the open ends of the tides for some distance around and as the stream of fluid so projected is thin at its advancing edge it will strike into 'the tubes loosening the soot which will be carried out by the more voluminous body of fluid at the rear edge of the stream. The plug may be adjusted upon the rod to vary the volume of the stream of fluid to give the best results orit may be va-' ried while in use by turning the rod several times around and thus moving the plug in or out by means 4 of the screw-threaded engagement of the rod with the If desired one of these adjustments for the plug may be dispensed with but it is preferred to employ both, as a more accurate adjustment may be secured and the volume of the stream of fluid be gradually changed while the device is in use. "The body of the blower is of such a length that it may be projected into, the smoke-box with its discharge end close to the open ends of the flues or it may be withdrawn so that a larger area will be subjected to the action of the steam.
By making the blower a portable device, several openings may be provided for it in the wall of the boiler and thus the flues subjected to a more direct action of the steam, and by the" use of a long flexible hose to de liver steam to the blower, only one of such devices is necessary for a whole battery of boilers.
Having thus fully described the invention what I claim is: v
1'. In a flue cleaner, the combination with a tubular body having an open end -for delivering steam to said body, of means within the'open end of said body adapted to form therewith a discharge opening of varying anglebetween said means and the body and adapted to be adjusted into and out of said end to vary said opening.
. '2. In a steam flue cleaner, the combination with a tubular body and means for delivering steam to one end of said body, of an'inclined deflector head within the opposite end ofsaid body forming a discharge opening between it and the body, and means for adjusting said head longitudinally of the bodyito vary the size '0: said opening and or rotating saidmeans to change the direction of the discharge.
' lar body having an open end, and means for delivering steam to said body, of a deflector within the open end of said body having an inclined'face forming a discharge opening of varying angle between said deflector and said end of the body, and means for'rotatively adjusting said head. I
4. In a steam flue cleaner, the combination with a tubular body having an open end and means for delivering steam to said body, of a deflector in said end of body hav ing an inwardly extending inclined face to deflect the steam laterally outward and a notch in its side to feed the steam straight outward and means for moving said deflector into and out of the end of said body to vary the discharge opening between said face and the end of the body.
5. In a steam flue cleaner, the combination with a tubular body having an open end, and means for delivering steam to said body, of a defiectorhead-in the open end of said body having an inclined face or varying angle at one side to deflect the steam laterally outward between it and the end of the body, and an opening at the opposite side to discharge steam in a direction parallel with the longitudinal axis'of the body.
'6. In a steam flue cleaner, the combination with a tubular.body having an open end, and means for delivering steam to said body under pressure, of a deflector head within said open end of the body formed with an inclined -defiecting surface havlngra spiral form longitudinally of the head and forming a tapering discharge opening between said surface and the endof the body, and means for rotating and adjusting said head to vary the opening.
the body having an inclined and spirally arranged surface at one side and a notch-in its opposite side, and means for rotatively adjusting said head to vary the space between said surface and the end of the body. I 1
8. In a steam flue cleaner,.the combination with a tubular body having an open end, and a coupling on its opposite end, of a hose attached to said coupling to deliver steam, to the body, a rod extending in the longitudinal axis of the body and outward through the closed endof said body, a deflector head adjustably secured upon the end of said rod within. the open end of the bodyand having an inclined surface forming a discharge opening of varying angle be tween it and the end of the body, and means of turning the rod.
9. In a steam flue cleaner, a combination "with an ex tended tubular body having an open end and adapted ,to be inserted in and withdrawn from an opening in aboiler, of a head to close the opposite'end of said body having a lateral opening and a screw-threaded opening in the longitudinal axis of the body, a coupling in the lateral opening, a hose attached to said opening to deliver steam to the body, a rod extending in the longitudinal axis of, the body and screw-threaded to extend outward through the said screwthreaded opening in the-head, a handle ion-.th'e outer end of the said rod, and a deflector head having an inclined side adjustably secured upon the opposite end of said rod, within the open end of the body forming a discharge opening between it and the end of the body and adaptedfto be ad.- justed' into and outof said end and turned by the turning of said rod. v
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
