To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER JAY WURTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shipping- Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to receptacles employed for inclosing and protecting devices during handling and transportation from place to place, and particularly to means for holding small articles of a more or less fragile character.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of the character indicated which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction and serviceable not only to surround and protect the article to be shipped but, also, to hold it in an immovable position relative to the inclosing case.
My invention is primarily intended for use in connection with the packing and shipment of the removable and replaceable parts of lamps having glow'ers which are non-conductors of electricity at ordinary temperatures and it will be specially described in connection with such use, although not necessarily restricted thereto. In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a longitudinal, sectional view of my invention, the inclosed device being shown in side elevation and inverted. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the case on line II-II of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal, sectional view of the cover, and Fig. 4 a corresponding view of the body portion of the case.
The device constituting my invention is shown as comprising two principal parts, which have a telescoping engagement with each other, the body portion 1 comprising an inner cylinder 2 of cardboard or other suitable, inexpensive material having the requisite degree of resistance to external pressure, an external cylinder or cup 3 and reinforcing caps 41 and 5, the former being inside the cylinder 2 and the latter outside the cylinder or cup 3, all of said parts being preferably of the same material and suitably glued together.
Interposed between the parts 2 and 3 and diametrically opposite each other are two spring arms 6, which, I as shown, are integral parts of a metal strip the connecting portion 6 of which is located between the caps 4 and 5 The upper ends of the arms 6 are bent substantially at right angles to the body portions, as indicated at 7. These arms may normally stand out away from the body portion 2, as indicated in Fig. 4, they being easily bent inward when it is desired to place the telescoping cover portion in position. The number of arms shown is obviously not essential, since one or more than two would be operative and useful for the purpose intended. The cover portion 8 is shown as cylindrical in form and as having a suitable cap 9, both of which may be of cardboard or other suitable material.
The device shown in Fig. 1 as contained within the case comprises a disk-shaped holder 10 from one side of which project terminal pins 11 andupon the other side of which is supported a heater and glower holder 12, upon which are, in turn, supported the heater tubes 13 and glowers 14. The device is first inserted in the body portion 1 of the case and the arms 6 are then pressed in so that the ends 7 will be above the. disk 10. The cover 8 may .then be slipped over the arms 6, into the position indicated in Fig. 1. The cover thus serves not only to protect the glowers and heaters and their supporting means,,but holds the locking arms 6 in position and the latter, in turn, by reason of their outward pressure, dental removal of-the cover.
The form and dimensions of this device may obtend to prevent acci-v viously be varied within considerable limits without departing from my invention. I claim as my invention:
