UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE E. WHITNEY, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO DOVER STAMP- ING- ANZD MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF PORTLAND, MAINE, A CORPORATION OF MAINE.
LAMP-CONTAINER.
i Patented May 22, 1917.
Application filed May 25, 1915., Serial No. 30,426.
for use 1n respect ,to lamps for head lights .of automobiles.
The essential object of the invention is to provide a reasonably small, compact and inexpensive receptacle in which the lamps can be safely carried without danger of breakage when being transported.
'My invention can best be seen and understood by reference to the drawings in which it is shown in its preferred form.
Figure 1 is a view in section of the device with the covers on and the lamps in place.
Fig. 2 is a view of a cover with a lamp inserted therein.
Fig. 3 is a view in part of the device showing a cover in place.
A is a hollow, cylindrical tube having covers B for each end. The covers B are constructed with bayonet grooves 72 of ordinary form, a being pins located on the outside of the tube so that when the covers are placed upon the tube and slightly revolved, they will be locked against longitudinal dis placement. Each cover Bhas a cylindrical socket C attached by electric welding or otherwise to its inside face, of a diameter a large enough to receive the neck-piece of an electric lamp of the type desired to be carried. Within the socket C is a spring 0 one end of which is attached to the inner face of the cover at 0 the other end 0 being free to bear against the neck-piece d of the lamp D. The socket C also has slotted bayonet joints 0 at opposite sides, 03 being the pins on the neck-piece of the lamp. The inner end of the bayonet joint 0 is constructed to form a depression 0. Upon the insertion of the neck-piece of the lamp within the socket C, the .pinal of the bayonet joint fitting in the slot 0 of the joint, the spring 0 will be depressed and upon a slight revolution of the lamp the pin :2 will enter the depression a, whereupon the lamp will be securely locked in the socket G against accidental displacement. a
' The lampv being in place, the cover B is then placed upon the tube A and looked as described, and the operation being repeated for the other cover, the lamps are then ready to be transported without chance of breakage. 1
To one using an automobile this device will be particularly useful, especially for purposes of touring, when it is desired to carry extra lamps safely and in as small a as desired. A feature of the invention is the very inexpensive cost of construction, for as I have designed the device ,it is made of sheet tin.
What I claim as my invention is An electric lamp container comprising a tached to eacli'end thereof, each cover having a socket containing a spiral sprlng and rigid tube having a cover removably at- I,
adapted to receive the neck piece of a lamp,
means comprising a bayonet joint to hold said lamp in said socket, said spring being adapted to prevent said bayonet joint from working loose when said container is in use.
