Be it known that I, WAI/run S. CALKINS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Clubs and Searchlights; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

This invention relates to combined club and searchli ht.

Gbjects o this invention are to provide a combined club and flashlight, whichI is particularly adapted for use by ni ht watchmen, policemen and others of t is general type, and which is so constructed that it functions bot-h as a club and as a flashlight or searchlight, thereby relieving the user from the necessity of carrying both a light and a club, which is now the usual practice.

Further objects are to provide a combined club and flashlight which is so constructed that the operator may grasp the handle in readiness to use it as a club, and when desired may instantly turn on the light without removing his hand. I

Further obfects are to provide a combined club and flas light in which the body portion, although hollowed out to receive the standard batteries and lamp, is, nevertheless, metal-lined so as to retain its original strength, which is so constructed that the outer end of the lens or lamp structure is protected from damage, and which is so constructed that it may be readily separated to permit refilling.

An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the club, partly in section. y

Re errin more particularly to the drawings, it wil be seen that the club comprises a hollow body portion 1, provided with a handle 2 and with a metal lining or sleeve 3, which extends throughout the body portion. This metal lining is interiorly threaded, as indicated at 4, and receives the exterior threaded portion of a cup-shaped metallic reinforcement 5, for the forward portion of the handle 2, such cup-shaped reinforcement thereby7 strengthening the joint between the body portion and the handle proper.

A reflector 6 ils positioned adjacent the forward end of the body portion and in front of the reflector a lens 7 is located, such lens being conveniently held in place by a threaded collar 8 and spaced a material distance from the outer end of the club to thereby. prevent damage `to the lens or lamp structure. Within the reflector a lamp 9 is mounted and is preferably screwed into an aperture formed in the rear of the reflector, With one terminal thereof connect'- ing with the metallic reflector and thus with the metallic sleeve 3 and with the other terminal connecting with the center terminal 10 of a battery 11.

A series of batteries of cylindrical contour and of standard type may be assembled within the hollow body portion, their insulating outer coverings 12 preventingeontact of their outer metallic shells 13 with the metallic lining 3.

It is to be noted that the center terminal of one battery contacts with the metallic exposed base of the succeedingl battery and thus connects the batteries in series. The rearmost cell is resiliently held in position by means of the conical spring 14.- which bears against the metallic base of the last battery and connects such base with a metallic bolt l-the rear'end of the spring being conveniently held between nuts 16 screwed upon said bolt.- This bolt is threaded into an insulating sleeve 17 positioned in the rear portion of the cup 5 and terminates in an outer suspension flanged eyelet head 18. A movable plunger 19 is positioned adjacent the bolt and is carried in a metallic shell 20 contacting with and passing through the cup-shaped metallic member 5. .The outer end of the plunger 19 is enlarged to provide a manipulating button 21 and a spring 22 loosely coiled about the plunger, holds the plunger in a retracted osition, as indicated in Figure 2. It is' to e particularly noted that by having the nuts 16 clamp the spring 14 between them that the spring may be adjusted to any desired degree of tension to accommodate variations in the length ofthe column of batteries.

It will thus be seen that a combined club and flashlight is provided which is eminently suited toN the needs of polimen and those engaged in similar occupation. It will further be seen that the weight of the batteries and of the metallic shell restores the portion to at at the club will not be lig t but will be of the desired weight.

It is also to be noted that although the body portion has been hollowed out, the strength of the club is maintained by means of the metallic linin so that no sacrifice is' made and the club 1s equally etiicacious in its usual capacity as an other standard club. l

Although one form of the invention has been described in considerable detail, it is to be understood that the invention may take various forms and is to be limited only as set forth in the appended claim.

l claim:

A combined club and flash light comprising a handle portion having a recessed end, a hollow club portion contactin recessed end and having a lamp 1n its outer endy a series of batteries mounted in regular sequence behind said lamp and extending to a point adjacent the cup shaped recessed portion of said handle, a'metallic lining 1n said club portion, a metallic lining in said cup shaped recessed portion threaded into said first mentioned metallic lining, a bolt having an exterior eyelet located at the outer end of the handle and extending through such handle and having a threaded end pro'ecting into and insulated from the metalic lining of said cup sha ed recessed portion of said handle, a spring bearing against the inner end of the series of batteries and a pair of nuts adjustably carried upon said threaded end and clamping the spring between them to hold such s ring in an adjusted position, and manna ly operable means for electrically ogrlmecting said metallic linings with said In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Racine, in the county of Racine, and State of Wisconsln.
