Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MICHAEL J. HowLETT, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York,- have invented new and useful Improvements in Game-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to game boxes and more especially to that class which is adapted to contain and shake or throw dice which are permanently located within the box and exposed to view through a transparent covering. These and other objects of this invention are more fully described in the following specification and set forth in the appended claims.

In the drawings forming a part of this application and accompanying same the same reference characters are used in the several figures to designate the same parts.

It has heretofore been the custom in the construction of dice boxes to arrange the box so that after the dice are shaken in same they are then thrown therefrom on to a table or desk to expose them to view. In the present invention for the sake of fair dealing the dice are always exposed to view and they are shaken or thrown without leaving the box and thereby run no danger of being lost.

The box consists of a casing 5 with cleats 6 on its upper edge which are adapted to receive a pane of glass or other transparent material 7. Within the box is a false bottom 8 with the wall-9 to which is connected the front end of a plunger 10 around which is a coil spring 11 interposed between the wall 9 and the end 12 of the box the outer end of this plunger being provided with a knob or handle 13 by which it may be drawn outward, carrying back the wall 9 and the false bottom 8. Thefront of the false bottom carries a flange l4 slightly higher than the upper surface of the same and upon this false bottom the dice are designed to be placed preparatory for throwing same. When away from the box carrying the movable parts within the box in the same direction the dice being located thereon and placing the spring 11 under tension. When the handle is released the spring pushes the wall 9 forward suddenly and the dice are thrown forward into the other end of the box; the flange 14 throwing them to a different position from that originally occupied thus producing a new combination. When it is de-- sired to effect a new throw the end of the box is tipped up and the dice are thus allowed to take that position on the movable platform again preparatory to the repetition of the above operation.

In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the above described parts are duplicated so that it is not necessary to tip the box up when a new throw is desired. The dice in this instance are thrown from one false bottom to the other and a central wall or ledge effects the tripping or turning of the dice so that new spots are shown. By means of the later construction the device may be permanently aifixed to a table or other suitable place and does not require handling but the whole work is done by one or the other of the plungers 10.

In the construction of this device various other modifications may be resorted to without departing from the essential features above described and shown.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a game box the combination with a case, of a false bottom to hold the dice to be thrown, tripping means to throw the dice to a new position and a spring actuated plunger by which the false bottom may be retracted and released to suddenly return to its normal position.

2. In a game box the combination with a casing of one or more false bottoms to hold the dice, plungers connected with the false bottoms and passing through the ends of the box, springs about the plungers and between the false bottoms and the sides and tripping means to intercept the dice as they are discharged from the false bottoms.
