Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 23, 1907.
Application filed April 6 1907, Serial No. 366,765.
10 all whom it may concern:
in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania,
in ('oinbinntit)n-Wrcnches, of which the lollowing is a specification, LOlcl"!i(i being had therein to he accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches, and the invenwrench having gripping jaws or surfaces that can be renewed when worn.
Another object of this invention is to provide a asimplc and inexpensive wrench that can be easily l and quickly adjusted for gripping curved or tint sur faces, the wrench being designed to perform the work ordinarily accomplished by a plurality of wrenches ol' various types.
With the above and other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the ii'ivention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement parts to be hereinititer more lully described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in \vhich:-
Figure l is a side elevation 01' my improved wg'ench, the handle or holder thereof being broken away, Fig. 2 is n siinilnr view illustrating he gripping blocks or jaws removed therei'rom, Fig. 3 is a front elevation, the clamps {or the gripping blocks being romoveth Fig. is e l'ront elevation of one of the gripping block clumps, Fig. 5 is it front elevation oi another clamp, Fig. (3 iso perspective view of one of the gripping blocks for curved surfaces, Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a gripping block having a smooth outer face for contacting [lat surfaces, Fig. 8 is a perspective view of an attachment used in connection with my improved 0 wrench for gripping cylindrical surfaces.
To put my invention into practice, I construct my improved wrench of a shank 1 having threads 2 upon two diametrically opposed edges, the remaining edges oi the shank being smooth and flat. The shank l is 5 provided with a fixed jaw 3, said j .vbeing l'ormet have invented certein new and useiul improvements tion has [or its primary object to provide a novel l with teeth 4 and cut away as at 5, to accommodate a j clamp ti, j 7 ior centering the same upon the end of the jaw 3, and with a set screw 5 lor holding the clamp upon the l jaw. The jaw and the clamp 6 are provided with i dowel pins 9, for centering detachable gripping block it) upon the jaw 23, said gripping block upon opl positely disposed tact-s being provided with teeth 11 and 12, the teeth .tl meshing with the teeth 4 of the jaw 23, and providing a positive connection. between the'block l0 and the jaw 23, when iy stress and strain exerted upon the block when gripping a surface will be relieved from the clamp t5.
Upon the shank l is mounted a movable housing 14, said housing being provided with a knurled nut 15, through which the shank ,1 passes, said nut being provided with interiorly arranged threads to engage the threads 2 of the shank l. The nut 15 is provided with radially disposed openings 15", whereby a suitable. instrument can be inserted in the nut for iurther rotating tlu. ame alter it has been tightened. One edge ol' the housing M is bii'urtatod to provide pierced lugs it and guide lugs 17, said guide lugs being adapted to engage ears 17 carried by the handle or lever 20. Between said lugs is pivotally mounted by a pin l8 a movable ,jaw 19, said jaw being provided with a handleorlever 20. The jaw is provided with teeth 2t and with a de tachablo T-shaped clamp 22, said clump being secured to thojaw by a set screw 23. The clamp 22 and the jaw l.) carry dowel pins 24, said dowel pins centering a. detachable block 25 upou the jaw it), said blot-k having a ilatsmooth outer lace 2t intended for use in gripping l [lat suriaccs.
l The housing M is provided with 11 depending arm 27 the handle or and interposed between said arm and lever is a coiled spring 27, said spring seat ing in the handle or lever 20, as at 28. The spring is employed tor normally holding the shank J parallel to the handle or lever 20.
In Fig. 8 ol the drawing, l have illustrated an attachi ment for my improved wrench, said attachment conipr'ising a seiui-eylindrieal sleeve with a smooth concnvcd outer lace, and having teeth 30 adapted to engage the teeth 2! ol the jaw 12) or the teeth i-oi the jaw 23. This a thu-hment is particularly designed for gripping polished surfaces such as brass or nickel plated pipes or tubes.
when it is desired to gripping [lat surfaces, two of the blocks 25'will be outployoth and [or round surfaces two of the blocks 10 will be employed, one set oi blocks piovidinggripping teeth while the other set of bloclqs provides flat suriaccs l'or engaging a. not or similar object.
2 permit of the gripping blocks The clamps t3 and i being easily and quickly changed, whercbvthe wrench said clamp being provided with a dowel pin use my improved wrench for ("an be used for numerous purposes, thus dispensing with the plurality of Wrenches heretofore used by mechanics or similar artisans.
I do not care to confine myself tuthe size, proportion Or minor details of construction, as such changes as are permissible by the appended claims, may be resorted to without departing from tho spirit and scope of the invention.
What- I Milli and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
A wrvuvh of the type described consisting of a threaded block shank, a toothed jaw carried thereby, a toothed adapted to engage the teeth of said jaw, a clamp, and dowel pins rarrietl by said jaw and said clamp for holding said hloek upnu said jaw, said ('lanip secured upon said jaw 'hy a dowel pin and set screw, a movable housing carried by said shank, an adjusting nut arranged in said housing and engaging said shank, said nut being provided with radial openings, a movable jaw pivotally connected to said housing and having teeth. a toothed block adapted to engage the teeth of said jaw, a clamp fouholding said block in engagememywiih said jaw, said jaw and clamp having each a projecting dowel pin. said clamp secured upon said jaw by a suitable set screw, a handle or lever carried by said jaw, and a coil spring seated in said handle or lever:- and contacting; with a depending arm, carried by said housing, hoth said spring and arm being; interposed hot ween said handle or lever and said Shank for-normally holdingsaid shank parallel to said handle or lever.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in the pres ence of two witnesses.
